1. Teaser Tuesday: Release Me by Ann Marie Walker and Amy K Rogers

RELEASE ME
Chasing Fire #2
Ann Marie Walker & Amy K. Rogers
Releasing July 21st, 2015
Berkley/Intermix

The second in the “seriously sexy and sinfully steamy”* Chasing Fire series, about a pain too deep to forgive and a passion too hot to forget…

Alessandra Sinclair knows that Hudson Chase is the last man she should want. The boy from the wrong side of the tracks has grown into a man who would do anything to get ahead, even if it means breaking Allie’s heart. But whenever she’s near him, the attraction between them is undeniable. And now that they’re working together, keeping her distance from Hudson is almost as impossible as keeping her feelings in check…

Hudson already lost Allie once and he refuses to lose her again. He’s determined to use their new business partnership to rekindle the spark he knows is still there. Only the closer he gets to winning her over, the clearer it becomes there are still secrets that could tear them apart for good…

Pre-Order

“I hate you,” she whispered. Her words were venom but they lacked conviction. Her hands flattened against his chest and her biceps tensed as if she were going to push him away, but instead her fingers curled around the fine fabric of his suit jacket, holding him in place.

Hudson took a deep breath through his nose. His heart pounded, pumping adrenaline through his body. “You wish you did,” he rasped in her ear, then tugged the lobe between his teeth.

Allie’s head thudded back against the elevator wall. “Bastard,” she breathed.

“I know, baby, I know.”

2. Teaser Tuesday–A Brush of Darkness by Allison Pang

I just started A Brush of Darkness by Allison Pang, and so far I am enjoying it.  I haven’t figured out Brystion yet – is he really as big a jerk as he occasionally comes across?  Talk about harsh!

Brystion snorted. “You did a shit job on Abby’s as well.  Whatever talent you once had is gone. Have some dignity and get on with your life.”

The artist’s mouth flattened into a sour line.

3. Teaser Tuesday–Trouble in a Pinstripe Suit by Kelly Hunter

Work has been stressful lately, so I have turned to my favorite comfort reads; Harlequin series romances.  Like tasty bonbons, I can’t get enough of them when real life gets to be overwhelming.

"I  have a ballroom?”  She jumped up from the table.  “I have a chandelier the size of a helicopter?”

“You’re not heading for the Scotch again, are you?” he asked warily.

“Certainly not.” She loved this place.  “I’m heading for the ballroom.”

4. Teaser Tuesday–Welcome, Caller, This is Chloe and My Favorite Mistake

I am enjoying Welcome, Caller, This is Chloe by Shelley Coriell, even though I am not convinced by the major conflict between the protagonist and her BFF.  Despite this, the writing style is fun and fresh, and I like Chloe’s breezy personality.

He didn’t look up, but a wave of red crept along the part of his neck not covered by his scarf. “I’m starting the essay on excise taxes that’s due in seven minutes.”

A page of bright white sat on his desktop. Seriously, he was on the first paragraph of a three-page essay. “Wow, Dunc, you could use some serious time management lessons.”

Last year, I enjoyed The A Circuit by Georgina Bloomberg and Catherine Hapka, so I am excited to see if I enjoy the follow up as much.  I just started this one, so I haven’t formed any opinions of it as of yet.

This was usually about the point when people started to zone out and look bored, no matter how polite they were trying to be. And that was okay. Sure, Tommi was pretty much obsessed with riding and showing. That didn’t mean she couldn’t talk about anything else.

5. Teaser Tuesday–An Affair with Mr. Kennedy by Jillian Stone

The weekend was all about Mr. Kennedy. What a luscious hunk of man he is.  I love this book, and hated every interruption I suffered while trying to savor this read.  The chemistry between Zak and Cassie was electric, and I could readily believe that he had the power to sweep this intelligent and stubborn woman right off of her feet.

She tucked her arm in his.  He took a long appreciative glance at the lovely woman by his side.  Indeed, she was stunning.  This was the second time in so many days that he wondered what she might look like in nothing at all. “You are entirely too distracting.”

“What was that, Zak?”

He exhaled.  “I’m having wicked thoughts about you.”

And then there is this passage, that surely sent Cassie’s heart galloping out of control.

He turned her in small circles and no longer waltzed at a respectable distance.  Candlelight from the ballroom chandeliers whirled around his face.  Blue eyes deepened to violet as his gaze fell to her mouth.

Cassie tilted up her head and parted her lips.

After rising her ire, Cassie tries to give Zak the cold shoulder.  It doesn’t work very well.  Zak is too blazing hot for a setdown.

“Good night, Cassie.”

“Good night, Mr. Kennedy.”

He reached out and stopped the door from closing. “That is twice now you’ve called me Mr. Kennedy.” Pressing closer, his words fell against plump lips that parted ever so slightly.  “I don’t like it anymore.”

Swoon!

6. Teaser Tuesday–Winterling and The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie

I just finished Winterling by Sarah Prineas.  What a good book! This is MG fantasy at its best, with a very relatable protagonist, a great big evil to defeat, and a wonderful supporting cast of characters.  Heroine Fer really sealed the deal, though.  She is a caring, brave girl who refuses to let her fears stop her from doing what her heart compels her to.

“Ah.” The Lady fell silent. When she spoke the edge had left her voice. She almost sounded sad.  “Our oaths and our rules bind us together, Gwynnefar. When an oath is broken there is a price. And it is always more than the oath breaker can pay.”

While browsing the comments at Dear Author, I discovered The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley. The hero has Asperger’s, which immediately caught my interest.  I purchased it for my Kindle, and so far, I am finding it a hard to put down read.  Ian is proving to be a very unique character, to say the least.

Beth blinked. “I beg your pardon?”

“I said, you could marry me. I don’t give a damn about your fortune.”

“My lord, why on earth should you ask me to marry you?”

“Because you have beautiful eyes.”

“How do you know?" You’ve not once looked at them.”

“I know.”

7. Teaser Tuesday–Saga of the Sioux and Obsidian

I waited very impatiently for Saga of the Sioux by Dwight Jon Zimmerman to arrive at my local library.   I have always been interested in Native American culture and history, and when I saw this adaptation of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, it went immediately on my wish list.  This passage is from the Introduction.

Today it is difficult, if no impossible, to understand how these people could have done what they did and feel no shame.  But that’s what happened-and not to just one tribe or nation.  As Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee revealed, from sea to shining sea, it happened to them all.

The other book I am finishing up is Obsidian by Jennifer L Armentrout.  This is a fun, fast-paced read with lots of clever dialog and snappy prose.

Her eyes went from me to Daemon, completely misinterpreting everything.  The glee in her eyes made me want to vomit on Daemon’s head. “You live next door?”

8. Teaser Tuesday–Rival and Bleeding Hearts

I had a bunch of holds come in from the library, so I am trying to fit as many of them into my reading schedule as possible. The first one I picked up was Rival by Sara Bennett Wealer. After reading Virtuosity by Jessica Martinez, I was craving another story with a competitive music backdrop.  So far, this is really good.

“Hey, Kathryn! Catch!” A beach ball hits me in the chest and then plops into my lap.  I look up to see Brooke’s older brother Brice bobbing in the water in front of me.

My other read is Bleeding Hearts by Alyxandra Harvey.  It’s about the Drakes.   I adore the Drakes.  There is nothing else to be said.

Nicholas won’t even sit in the same car with me because the smell of warm human blood is still too tempting.  He just turned a little over a year ago, and it takes time to get all those appetites under control.  I think of it like a case of perpetual PMS, where you just feel inside your bones that if you don’t get a hot fudge sundae right away, you might actually kill someone.

9. Teaser Tuesday–Busted in Bollywood and In The Forests of The Night

I picked up Busted in Bollywood by Nicola Marsh this weekend, and so far, I am finding this breezy contemporary a fun read.   I am having a problem with all of the references to Indian food, though – I desperately want to hit the closest Indian buffet because the book is making me hungry!

His smile turned sly.  “Besides, I have a reputation to uphold.  It wouldn’t be good for me to be seen interfering in women’s work.”

Women’s work?  You little worm, you-“

“Gotcha.” He had the audacity to wink and I deflated.

I also started In The Forests of Then Night by Kersten Hamilton, and about 2 pages in, I didn’t want to put it down!  I enjoyed Tyger Tyger quite a bit despite a slow beginning, and this follow-up has me hooked already!

“I need to speak to Roisin,” he said.

Finn rubbed his jaw.  “Then I suggest you get off my girl’s lap. And put some clothes on, man.  You’re indecent.”

10. Teaser Tuesday–Once Upon a Winter’s Eve by Tessa Dare

Since I bought my Kindle Fire, I have been reading eBooks by the boat load. I have been alternating between full length novels and novellas, and have read quite a few entertaining books over the past few days.  I loved the cover of Tessa Dare’s Once Upon a Winter’s Eve: A Spindle Cove Novella, and couldn’t resist clicking the BUY button.  It was only .79 cents!  So far I am enjoying it enough to contemplate hitting her backlist.

“Christian, if I’m helping you escape, I’m going to truly help you.  Not just bid you farewell and send you to your watery doom.”

11. Teaser Tuesday–Crossed and Eternal Rider

I love this line from Crossed by Ally Condie, and wish that I, too, could see the one good part in everything.

My mother could dance and sing and she went out to watch the sunset every night.  “They didn’t have sunsets like these in the Main Provinces,” she’d say.  She always found the one good part of everything and then turned her face toward it every chance she had.

Eternal Rider by Larissa Ione is about the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.  I  couldn’t resist.  Really.  Horse. Men.

Ares spun his mug down the length of the bar top and slid his queen into striking position.  Triumph sang through him, filling that space in his soul that was always hungry for victory. “Checkmate.”

12. Teaser Tuesday–The Vision and Virtuosity

I am almost finished with The Vision by Jen Nadol. Like The Mark, this is a thought provoking, well-written read.

I didn’t answer.  How could I? Zander was so confident, without a trace of arrogance, just a quiet certainty that he’d done the right thing.

I couldn’t imagine ever feeling that way.

Virtuosity by Jessica Martinez was a surprise arrival in my mailbox.  The first three pages have me totally hooked!

I opened my eyes.  My knuckles, bony and white, were shaking.  The pills were wearing off.  The music was over.  I opened my hand.

13. Teaser Tuesday–Shadow Kin and One Brave Cowboy

I wasn’t able to get much reading accomplished last week because I am so busy at work, so I am still reading Shadow Kin by M J Scott.  I really am enjoying this book, though, so I don’t care how long it takes me to finish it!  Lots of action, lots of magic, and lots of intrigue.

It was one thing for the Beast’s blood to be found.  It was another entirely for mine to be found with it.  Still, there was nothing I could do about it right now.

My “on the go” book is One Brave Cowboy by Kathleen Eagle.  I just started this, so I don’t have any impressions of it yet.

Cougar wanted peace and privacy. He needed to build a new life, and he would start with what he loved most.

Horses.

14. Teaser Tuesday–The Black Stallion and the Lost City and Shadow Kin

I haven’t read a Black Stallion book in forever, so I was totally excited when I saw The Black Stallion and the Lost City by Steven Farley at the library.  I knew nothing about horses when I read Walter Farley’s books in the series – I wonder what I will think of Steven’s, now that I have horses of my own?

Over the clamor of grunting horses and shouting riders, Alec could hear Bateman calling out orders from one of the camera-laden speedboats that had been tracking the runners from the river.

“Keep the camera on them!” Bateman squawked over his bullhorn from his position on the bow.

I am on an urban fantasy kick and have Shadow Kin by M.J. Scott slated for my next read. Here’s a teaser from the third page.

Legend says we kill by reaching into a man’s chest and tearing out his heart.  It’s true, we can. I’ve even done it. Once.

15. Teaser Tuesday-Indelible and The Family Plan

I love this! A girl who is as concerned about a nice knot as I am.  I prefer the Double Windsor for a more even look, however.  In Lani Woodland’s Indelible, protagonist Yara doesn’t have one little bit of sympathy because her guy Brent is required to look good.

“You look nice in a tie.” I picked up the end of his blue tie and knotted it in a Half Windsor for him, making sure it hung straight.

I am also reading The Family Plan by Cathy McDavid on my iPhone while I am out and about running errands.

Sinbad, evidently tired of standing in one place, began pawing the ground. The movement caused his injury to gape and seep fresh blood.

16. Teaser Tuesday–After Obsession and Ruined

I can’t believe that it’s September! Where the heck did the summer go? Time flies when you’re having fun, I guess!

I just started reading these, so I’ll share the first few sentences of each.

This teaser is from After Obsession by Carrie Jones and Steven E. Wedel. I love Carrie Jones, so I am frothing to get going on this book!

You are mine.

You all will be mine.

These are the words I hear every single freaking morning since my friend Courtney’s dad died. They slither around inside my brain all day until I think I’m going crazy and today is no exception.

I can hardly wait to find out more about that!

Up next is is Ruined by Paula Morris. This book has been sitting on my TBR for a while, so I grabbed it because I have been wanting to read it for a long, long time!

Torrential rain was pouring the afternoon Rebecca Brown arrived in New Orleans. When the plane descended through gray clouds, she could only glimpse the dense swamps to the west of the city. Stubby cypress trees poked out of watery groves, half submerged by the rain-whipped waters, flecked with snowy herons.

17. Teaser Tuesday–Island’s End by Padma Venkatraman

Look! I think I have settled down from my summer flightiness! I am trying to read one book at a time this week! I don’t think that will last long, but I do want to finish up this book before I head out to vacation next week.

I have high hopes for Island’s End by Padma Venkatraman because I enjoy reading about cultures and places different from my own.

"The spirits have chosen you to be their messenger because your own spirit has the power to travel deep into the Otherworld. Perhaps you will become the next oko-jumu.  Would you like to be the tribe’s spiritual guide one day? Do you wish to become my apprentice?”

18. Teaser Tuesday-Animal Magnetism, Knight’s Curse, and The Magicians

I’m still afflicted by this strange case of ADD, which isn’t allowing me to concentrate on any one book for long.  I think it’s because I have so many books that look awesome, and I want to get to them all – at the same time!  I finished a slew of titles on Saturday, and then dove right back into a bunch more, so here are teasers from them.

Animal Magnetism by Jill Shalvis is a book I picked up at the “I Lost My Mind At Borders” trip.  I love the puppy’s expression, and knew that cute little face wouldn’t steer me wrong.  This is a fun read, and I love all of the animals.

The lamb-Lulu, he presumed-stepped forward and tried to shove her face into his crotch, but duly warned by Dell, Brady backed up.

“Don’t be afraid. She’s sweet.”

At Lilah’s words, Lulu appeared to smile, pulling back her lips to show her teeth, which didn’t look sweet to Brady.

I really didn’t mean to start reading Knight’s Curse by Karen Duvall right at this moment, but after zipping through the first chapter, I found myself going back to the book again and again.  It’s an urban fantasy with a tough as nails protagonist who is in a very unfortunate set of circumstances.

He looked thoughtful for a few seconds before saying, “Kill him.”

Surprise raised my voice an octave. “Kill Shui?”

The gargoyle growled, topping it off with a hiss.

The Magicians by Lev Grossman is being bill as a Harry Potter for adults, so of course I had to check that out.  I honestly don’t see many similarities so far, but I am still in the middle of the set up for the story.

It felt like his lungs had been crumpled up and then incinerated. He coughed for five solid minutes without stopping. Eliot laughed so hard he had to sit down. Quentin’s face was slick with tears.  He forced himself to take another drag and threw up into a hedge.

Here is a link to a fan video for the books – If you have time, click and give it a watch.  Then click over to Space Unicorn for more lol’s.

19. Teaser Tuesday–A Trio of Teasers

My ADD is kicking in again, and I am finding myself jumping between three books.  I am enjoying all of them, which makes my inability to focus on one at a time even more painful.

First up is Kekkaishi Vol 26 by Yellow Tanabe.  I love this series – it’s probably my favorite.  I love all of the characters, especially Yoshimori and his older brother Masamori.  Things are getting so intense, too!  I am worried that something terrible is going to happen soon!

“I don’t like you.  Get out of here.”

“On my way.  But first, a question… Have you ever sensed the limits of your abilities?”

“Never.”

Between by Jessica Warman started off a little slowly, but I am finally warming up to protagonist Liz.  When she was alive, she wasn’t a very nice person.  Will she change now that she’s dead?

“No, you couldn’t.”  His tone is firm.  “I’m a nice person.  I never did anything to hurt anyone.  But you…you and your friends.” He takes a moment to look up and down the hallway, which is starting to empty as homeroom approaches. “Admit it, Liz.  Isn’t there a part of you that’s embarrassed to be sitting here with me, even though nobody can see us?”

Dream Lover by Adrienne Staff is a Loveswept Classic Romance.  When I was younger, I love, love, loved this line of category romances.  I am excited that some of them are being made available again, and I’m glad that I can read some of the ones that I missed the first time around.  Now I hope that some of the old Candlelight Ecstasy Romances will follow in their footsteps.

The flames danced in the darkness. Red and gold, leaping and writhing, they could have been the souls of ancient warriors painted for battle, burning fierce and pure at their hearts.  Cody could almost hear the drums.

20. Teaser Tuesday–The Centaur’s Daughter and Only Yours

Wow! It looks like the weather will be pleasant this week, and not scorching hot! Yay!  My internal temperature gage only has a comfort level of few degrees above or below 75, so I am living in the wrong state.  It is brutally cold in the winter, and sticky and humid during the summer.  It seems that we only have two seasons here in Michigan – HOT and COLD.  That’s it!

Anyhoo, I’ve been reading books in many different genres the last few weeks, and here are two current reads that I wanted to share.

First up is The Centaur’s Daughter by Ellen Jensen Abbott.  I enjoyed Watersmeet, so I was interested to see what kind of adventures are in store for Abisina.  Events kick off with bang!

In a few steps, Abisina was next to him.  Blood ran down Ulian’s chest. Dropping her bow, Abisina reached for the spear, but before she could grab hold, she heard the snarl of another wolf.

Only Yours by Susan Mallory caught my eye because it’s about a dog trainer, and I’m a sucker for books with animals.  Hero Simon is a hard guy to like at first. I hope he lightens up a bit, because he has the emotional depth of a rock at the start of the book!

It was chemistry, he told himself as he entered the main highway and headed back to Fool’s Gold.  One of those quirks of DNA that was intriguing but ultimately meaningless.  So, he’d briefly wanted Montana.  Later he would see her and everything would be fine.  He had his work.  Nothing else was important.

21. Teaser Tuesday-Now is the Time for Running and The Boy at the End of the World

It looks like it’s going to be another scorching week! I am so glad that I have some great reads to help keep me cool.  I am having such a hard time with the humidity this year, and I feel like all of my energy has just been sucked right out of my body.  Ugh!  I hope you stay cool wherever you are!

I just finished Now is the Time for Running by Michael Williams, and I couldn’t put the book down.

I don’t understand but give him more money to pay for the inflation anyway. I don’t think Mr. Singh would cheat me, but how can something cost three times more in a month’s time?

The Boy at the End of the World by Greg van Eekhout starts with a bang, and it hasn’t slowed down since the first page!

Without any other humans alive, what meaning did his own life have?

He was humanity’s dying breath.

But at least he was still breathing.

He decided he would keep breathing as long as he could.

He sat beside a rock and began sharpening his spear.

22. Teaser Tuesday–Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

So, now that I’m hooked on The Hunger Games trilogy, all I want to do is finish reading Mockingjay.  As the last person on the planet to read the book, I have this overwhelming urge to get ‘er done, before someone spoils the ending for me!  It was terribly frustrating to be stuck in a car for 6 hours on Sunday, and not be able to read, all because I am cursed and get car sick very easily.  Argh! Of all of the things to be afflicted with, why, why, why do I have to suffer from motion sickness?!

Here are a few lines from one of my favorite scenes so far:

A hush in the trees. Just the rustle of leaves in the breeze.  But no birds, mockingjay or other. Peeta’s right. They do fall silent when I sing. Just as they did for my father.

23. Teaser Tuesday–The Hunger Games and Haunting Violet

How can it be Tuesday again?  I can’t believe that it’s almost July! Where did the first half of the year go??

I read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins over the weekend, and enjoyed it so much that I promptly ordered the other books in the trilogy.  What a fantastic book!  I wonder why I waited so long to discover it?

"“Then lie! Make something up!” says Haymitch.

“I’m not good at lying,” I say.

“Well, you better learn fast. You’ve got about as much charm as a dead slug,” says Haymitch.

I love Alyxandra Harvey’s Drake Chronicles, so I was happy to get my hands on Haunting Violet.  Will this be as good without those hunky Drake brothers?

The girl faded, tattering like mist under a spear of strong sunlight.

The ghostly candles guttered and went out.

24. Teaser Tuesday–Flying Blind by Deborah Cooke

I picked up Flying Blind by Deborah Cooke this weekend, and so far, I am enjoying it. Who can resist dragons? I can’t!

My mom picked me up from the principal’s office.  Her face was expressionless, which was not a good sign.

Suspended.” The word crossed her lips in a low hiss of fury, one that made me wonder whether I’d been afraid of the wrong parent.

25. Teaser Tuesday–Mercy & Cleopatra Confesses

I read Mercy by Rebecca Lim on Saturday, and I loved it. I could not put the book down; it was literally glued to my hands, and I couldn’t go to bed until I finished it.   I enjoyed the writing, the characters, the premise, the way I kept wondering about Mercy and who she really was.  I can hardly wait for the next book in the series!

Here are the first few sentences– they pretty much reeled me in.

There’s something very wrong with me.

I can’t remember who I am or how old I am, or even how I got here.  All I know is that when I wake up, I could be any age and anyone, all over again.  It is always this way.

I am currently reading Cleopatra Confesses by Carolyn Meyer.  Cleopatra is one of my favorite historical figures, eclipsed only by her ancestor, Alexander the Great.  I have high hopes for this one, but I am not far enough into the book to have formed any kind of opinion yet.

I consider myself warned.  I drain my goblet, and having learned nothing of interest from my sneering sisters, as soon as I can get away from them, I do.

I sense treachery in these two.  I cannot bear to be near them.
