Greg connected with a local model, Jessica Lough. She and I both brought boxes and bags of fabrics, accouterments and costuming elements to choose from.

In one of the *many* workshops last month (few of which actually got blogged, I was so slammed in February), we got to learn about painting with graphite and gold leafing in conjunction. This weekend, I'm heading off on my annual spring retreat and hope to work on this some MORE.
Stay tuned.

It's been an insane couple of weeks! Dead computer, internet issues, camera troubles, my big double-workshop - all have conspired to make blogging next to impossible.
(my piece, in progress at the workshop last weekend).
I *have* blogged about the workshop at least - you can read the report over on TLCWorkshops.
Here's crossing fingers for computer recovery and catching up overall!

Did my first oil painting since college in the Dan Dos Santos workshop this past weekend. (You can see a day-by-day report on the TLCWorkshops blog if you'd like to follow along with the intense fun).
Here's a step-by-step (at least when I remembered to take a process shot):
Here's a step-by-step (at least when I remembered to take a process shot):
I went into the workshop with some initial thumbnail ideas based on a photoshoot of my niece.
After getting my thumbnails critiqued, I finished mocking-up a comp in photo shop -
-substituting some elements I shot at the workshop.
Spent the rest of the day finalizing a sketch and then transferred it onto gessoed illustration board.
Here's the cleaned up drawing on the board, spray fixed with workable fixative and ready for paint.
Dan helped me out by showing the start of a colorful underpainting.
Paint applied, sprayed with water, dabbed off with paper towels - until it became a colored, textured surface to work on.
(after this, I forgot to break to photograph it in steps)-
The end of the first painting night - basic color down. Steep learning curve in using a different medium than my norm (watercolor).
And here's after another coat the second painting day. Interesting process. We'll see what it may or may not lead to?

After an amazing weekend with Greg Spalenka's Artist as Brand workshop (you can see my report on it here), we had one final afternoon before I had to return him to the airport which I spent helping him out with a fantabulous photoshoot. It ended up feeling a bit fairy-ethnic as we listened to Loreena McKennitt in the background, so you get to as well, as you peruse the following pictures:
Greg connected with a local model, Jessica Lough. She and I both brought boxes and bags of fabrics, accouterments and costuming elements to choose from.
Greg was very inventive with our limited resources.
Many variations of costume and lighting were attempted.
(Is this not the best profile *ever*?!!!)
Jessica's fabulous significant other was put to work right and left -
- from light-holding, to fan-holding -
-to photographer holding!
Fun shoot. Great weekend overall!

The last weekend of this month TLCWorkshops is hosting Terese Nielsen who is teaching a fabulous looking figure-related workshop. I'm giving you a sneak peek into the assignment we'll be working on:
Idealized Realism and the Human Figure
The assignment for this weekend is to portray an iconic, idealized image of the essence or attitude of a chosen character. (This would be similar to what is assigned to an illustrator for an interior book illustration, character driven card art, or spot illustrations for a magazine or D&D manual.)
Your Task
Bring a’ bio’ to class of a character that you will depict from mid thigh or waist up. We're focusing on beauty/idealism so choose one (male/female) that you have an affinity for, and will provide the opportunity to portray attitude and charisma. (Think angels, gods/goddesses or characters from mythology). Bring a half page write-up about your character: no need to put your writers-hat on here, just notes and details about the character.
We will only be working on the drawing aspect of the illustration, which will include selecting appropriate, powerful reference, as well as shooting supplemental photos for costuming or hand and arm positions. The final drawing can be drawn entirely by hand or partially composed in Photoshop and printed if you wish to speed up the process of achieving a tight final tracing paper sketch. Keep your design iconic, without complicated backgrounds or surroundings. Select design elements and symbolism that are relevant and supportive to what the character is about.
Come play with us! There are just a couple of spots left.

I came back from Spectrum Live with goodies. :-)
I tried to keep my purchases to a minimum (no more wall space for prints, etc..) but I'm a sucker for cards and books. (And botanical perfume by Roxana Illuminated Perfume - which is rich, complex and luscious.)
I also bought *sketches*! The one on the left by the inimitable Allen Williams, the one on the right by my long-time hero Scott Gustafson.
And then there was all the mini-art in the form of business and postcards. I only took a sampling of all the wondrous artists there - still overwhelming in fabulousness.
I was there primarily promoting my TLCWorkshops - which I must say went really well. Stay tuned for upcoming stupendous line-ups!

Lots of hard work today!
(see us slaving away?)
Justin showed us a digital example of how he refines his characters -
(see the 'after'!)
And a toned-drawing of Long John Silver example...
We all worked diligently on our own characters -
Catherine's lemur-Billy Bones.
Didzis's boar - Long John Silver....
(you can click on these to see a larger version).
John's vampire-bat-Billy-Bones...
Jo's possum-Mr. Wickham (from Pride and Prejudice).

I'd like to, but I'm not an artist. I don't even play one on TV.
Why would you have to be an artist to attend? *Everyone* is invited. (In fact, non-artists generally have more $$ than almost any artist. These conventions can only continue if the general public come and spend $!)
I must have misunderstood the nature of the beast.
