1. Stan Goldberg Has Died

Stan GoldbergStan Goldberg has passed away. He was 82-years-old.

Goldberg (pictured, via) devoted six decades of his career to the comics industry. He has produced work for several high profile publishers including Marvel, DC Comics, and most famously, Archie Comics. In 2012, he was inducted into the National Cartoonists Society’s Hall of Fame.

Here’s more from Comic Book Resources: “Goldberg famously drew Archie’s portion of the 1994 crossover Archie Meets the Punisher. His final work for the publisher was released in 2010. However, he continued to freelance for other companies, notably producing an Archie parody for Bongo’s Simpsons Comics and Nancy Drew and Three Stooges graphic novels for Papercutz.”

2. 8-Year-Old Nancy Drew Stars in New Graphic Novel Series

Papercutz will release a new Nancy Drew graphic novel series about the famous detective’s early years. Since 2005, the publisher has released 23 Nancy Drew comic titles. Volume No. 1 of Nancy Drew and The Clue Crew is titled “Small Volcanoes.”

Husband-and-wife writing duo Stefan Petrucha and Sarah Kinney will write the stories; both have worked with Papercutz on the Nancy Drew comics. Artist Stan Goldberg will illustrate.

Here’s more from the release: ”Drew family’s top-secret case files once again to reveal the mysteries that abounded in River Heights when Nancy was only eight-years-old. Her best friends George, Bess, and Ned are still helping her out, and their friendship is almost as important to solving these middle-grade crimes as their unparalleled smarts.”

3. Stan Goldberg leaves Archie, covers Marvel’s FF #1

FF_1_GoldbergVariant.jpg
Legendary Archie artist Stan Goldberg started his career in the Golden Age coloring countless covers for Atlas, but in the Silver Age he was as a colorist for Marvel, working on such things as the cover to the very first issue of The Fantastic Four and desinging the color schemes for much of the seminal line. So it’s fitting that he’s been tagged to draw a variant cover for the new FF #1 featuring the new line-up, which features Spider-Man. The interiors are by Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting while other variant covers are by Daniel Acuna, Gerard Parel and Marko Djurdjevic.

Speaking of Goldberg, as you might guess from this assignment, he’s no longer working with Archie, a fact which has been going around cartoonist circles for a few weeks. Goldberg, 78, is one of the last of the Silver Age Archie artists working, and recently drew the “Archie gets Married” storyline which vaulted the company back into the spotlight.

We’re told that since leaving Archie he’s had several work offers and is currently taking a well-deserved vacation in Mexico.
