Hi! :-)
It's me again! Sorry I didn't do a review last week, I was so busy! Anyway, this week I decided to review the book The Candy Shop War by Brandon Mull.
Summer, Nate, Trevor, and Pigeon are four friends who stop by The Sweet Tooth, the new candy shop in town, hoping to get some candy. They find themselves doing odd jobs for Mrs. White, the owner, in exchange for some of her mouthwatering treats. Once Mrs. White trusts them, she sends them on more challenging missions in order to earn some special, magical candy. Moon rocks, which help you defy gravity, melting pot mixers, that change your race temporarily ( I found that part a little racist :0 ) and shock bits, which allow you to stun an attacker, are only some of the marvelous candies that await them. The tasks get harder and more dangerous as the story goes on, and the kids don't know whom to trust. This story is exciting and dramatic, (after all, grave robbing and breaking into museums are hardly everyday activities) and I recommend it for grades 5 and up.
So that's it, hope you liked it!

Below is a spot illustration I did a few months back that is recently in print. It’s for a Christian magazine so this is a story about kind of letting go and not sweating the chaos that can occur if you give children some part of the church service. It’s a sweet story if you have time to read it. All the ones I do for this magazine are like that. So I feel I get a blessing each time I do the illustration to accompany it.
As for the illustration, this project gives me opportunity to stretch my illustration style. In this case, I did the characters loosely and quickly (though that actually takes a lot of time to do!) and kept the color scheme somewhat monochromatic. Below, I have the spread in the article, and then half the illustration as a closeup.
Thanks for stopping by!

There’s nothing worse than losing a pretend race…
Oh how I love to play with textures and different patterns. Here’s a quickie for this week. A scene based on my childhood. For some reason I would always lose in these sofa races my cousin would make me play…she was really good ..

Lowell Hess is one of the forgotten giants of the mid-20th century cartoon art business. Among his many laudable accomplishments is a year-long series of tiny spots done for Collier’s magazine in the early 50’s.
These spots appeared regularly in a column called “48 States of Mind” and, although tiny in stature, they are huge in the excellence of their content. Brilliant character design, hilarious oddball concepts and meticulous execution make Hess’ tiny Collier’s spots well worth a closer look. You’ll find several more at Today’s Inspiration.

Three spot illos done for the July issue at St. Louis Magazine. The first was for a section highlighting St. Louis farmer's markets, the second for a Missouri based electric car company, and the third for a piece on a campus wide bottle ban at Washington University.

Adrian of First Time Dad tagged me a few weeks ago for the face off meme! Thank you Adrian for thinking of me! I was surprised since I do have a picture of myself on my blog, but he said I have to get creative and post another one. Get creative? Well, this is the only picture I have of myself at the moment and my digital camera is broken. And I didn’t want to let to much time pass so I decided to use the same picture. I promise I will post another picture as soon as I get my camera fixed, really I will Adrian.
I realize this is my profile but it is pretty much what I look like, not straight on, but you get a general idea. I will add a description of myself since you can't see eye color, height stuff like that in the picture. I have green eyes and light brown hair. I'm 5' and you can forget my saying how much I weigh. I'm not heavy but I'm not skinny either, and I'm not one of those woman who can eat her heart out and not gain a pound. I think that's it, isn't it? If not I will answer any physical questions in my comments if I left something out. Thanks for thinking of me Adrian and let me know if this is o.k. for now anyway. Oh, I forgot I want to take advantage of this opportunity to point out that I do not have that Southern American accent that is portrayed in Hollywood. The movies make people from the deep south (you Americans know what I mean) appear kind of dense. I really can talk and I could worry about what people think, but instead I'll follow Scarlett O'Hara's advice from Gone with the wind, "I shan't think about that today, I'll think about that tomorrow!"

Nick of Anything Goes...yes you buddy...you can run but you can't hide!
Be sure to follow these simple rules: Post a short article and include your photograph (or more if you want to). If you already have a pix online somewhere, the get creative with a new one :)Next include the link to the others who have displayed their pix, or even include their pix in your post, adding a reference to it. So far, these are the brave ones :)
Love it, particularly the owl :)
Really cool Harry P pic, I like that it's subtle.
thanks guys! My daughter (the Harry Potter expert around here) thinks the owl should be less cute and more majestic...maybe Hedwig deserves her own drawing.
