1. SPONSORED POST In the Heart of the Sea

In the Heart of the SeaThis Blog Post is Sponsored by Warner Bros. Entertainment.

Way back in the winter of 1820, the New England whaleship Essex was attacked by a much bigger, mammoth-sized whale. The incident would inspire American author and poet Herman Melville to write Moby-Dick, but this was a real-life disaster in which a ship with a crew sailed into the Pacific and never returned.

In the Heart of the SeaIn the Heart of the Sea

An exciting new film, In the Heart of the Sea (rated PG-13), is based on the Nathaniel Philbrick book, In the Heart of the Sea—The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex (for ages 12 and up).

The Pittsburgh-born author’s book is a work of nonfiction. It explores the grim path of the crew of the Essex, which headed out to sea after leaving Nantucket in the summer of 1819. The ship barely survived a bout of nasty weather not long after it set sail, enduring significant damage in the aftermath, and was sunk after the huge sperm whale attacked it during November of the following year.

Opening in theaters on December 11 and starring Chris Hemsworth, In the Heart of the Sea tells the powerful true story of the Essex and celebrates good storytelling.

Tell us in the Comments below about the last good piece of nonfiction storytelling you read, and leave your caption for this photo . . .

2. SPONSORED POST Hotel Transylvania 2

Hotel Transylvania 2This Blog Post is Sponsored by Sony Pictures Animation.

Are you ready to go BACK to HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA?

Or maybe you’re checking in for the first time? No matter; the good news is that Dracula’s formerly monsters-only hotel policy has finally relaxed. He’s opening his doors to human guests, and considering his grandson isn’t exactly a pureblood vampire, it’s about time!

Coming to theaters on September 25, Hotel Transylvania 2 (rated PG) has Dracula worried about his grandson Dennis’s half-human, half-vampire roots. When Drac’s old-school dad, Vlad, discovers that a change in policy allows for human guests and that his great-grandson isn’t 100% vampire, things get batty!

“There are four generations living under one roof, which obviously will be intense, no matter what the family is,” says actor Andy Samberg, who voices Johnny in the new movie. As Mavis’s human husband and father to Dennis, good ol’ Johnny isn’t only battling your standard in-law gripes.

“Johnny’s not just up against Drac, but now Vlad who is even more old-school in the tradition of being a vampire,” says Samberg. Obviously, Mavis is branching outside of that by marrying a human. So it’s complicated, but it’s also wonderful, and it’s them all getting to know each other and learning to understand each other.”

Actress and singer, Selena Gomez, is the voice of Johnny’s more-than-a-century-old wife, Mavis, in Hotel Transylvania 2. She agrees with her co-star on the fun in packing everyone into the hotel in the new film.

“Dracula brings everyone together,” says Gomez. “I think that’s sweet and endearing because he wants to include everyone.”

What can we learn from this, and from Hotel Transylvania 2, about celebrating our similarities and differences—monster or not? That lesson isn’t lost on Gomez. In fact, it’s somewhat close to home for her.

“Extended family in Hotel Transylvania 2—whether they’re Frankenstein or the Wolf gang —everybody kind of comes together under one roof,” Gomez says. “That’s a cultural thing, in my opinion, because that’s exactly how my dad’s side of the family is. It’s not a good thing [to them] when you move out of the house. It’s almost like [they] want them to stay there forever, and you just pass it along, and I think that’s Drac’s idea. His intention is really good, but that’s something everyone can relate to.”

Check out the loads of fun that all goes down under one roof in the Hotel Transylvania 2 trailer, and see the movie in theaters on September 25.

    10. SPONSORED POST Earth to Echo

    Earth to Echo movie photo

This blog post is sponsored by Earth to Echo.

Q: What is Earth to Echo about?
TEO: I play Alex in the movie. The movie is about four really good friends. These construction workers come into our town and they are going to build a freeway and they say we have to move out. It’s our last night together before the move and we decide to go out and have an adventure.
REESE: When we go out, we find out that they are aliens.
ELLA: I play Emma. These guys are my best friends. I’m kind of the outsider in the beginning, but I wedge my way into the group. I eventually become a huge asset to them.

Q: Tell me about your character in Earth to Echo.
ELLA: Emma is a smart, adventurous girl, who insists on tagging along with the group of boys. She thinks quickly on her feet and manages to get them out of a few dilemmas, which earns her respect among the group. I relate to Emma in many ways. Emma is a good friend, which I consider myself to be. We stick by our friends no matter what.

    Logan Lerman

. He plays my all-time favorite hero, Percy Jackson, in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians movie series.
    ASTRO: Keke Palmer!

Q: Funniest or most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you?
ELLA: At eight years old, for the first time, I decided to wear a two-piece bathing suit to a pool party with all of my classmates. One of the boys in my class thought it’d be funny to pull my bottoms down while I was climbing up the water slide. Everyone saw my bare bottom, and I was mortified.
TEO: I have a talent for tripping over everything! I’m so clumsy. I was at some sort of gala event and I was walking down the red carpet and I tripped over it. That was pretty embarrassing.
ASTRO: I was performing on stage and a beautiful girl in the crowd smiled at me. I got flustered and forgot the lyrics to my own song on live TV.

What is one thing you wish everyone would do to make the world a better place?

ELLA: Do something nice for someone else without expecting anything in return.
REESE: Be more respectful . . . to our planet, to peoples’ feelings, to our teachers and schools, to individual church and religion beliefs, and parents and siblings. I think everyone could be more generous to people in need also. We carry little supply packs in our truck to give to homeless people when we see them. It can make a big difference to a person to know someone cares.
    ASTRO: Go color blind!

Q: Personal motto or favorite quote?
    ASTRO:
    I WILL NOT LOSE!

Q: What is the best book you have ever read?
ELLA: I love reading. I’m a huge reader. The first book that I loved was an assigned reading book: The Giver.

I’m really excited that they are making a movie out of it.

Q: What is an unusual talent that you have that no one else would know about?
REESE: I love driving. I just got my permit. My dad has all these movie cars, so I’m all into cars.
ELLA: I’ve never met someone else who can sing the ABC’s backwards.
ASTRO: I’m a rapper. Acting is my second job, but I’m also pretty good behind the camera, which is something no one knows . . . yet.

. In fact, well over 200 stunt performers punched the clock during shooting, says the movie’s stunt coordinator James Armstrong.

“The actors rehearse in a huge empty parking lot and we put marks down on the ground to replicate where curbs, or buildings or different things are,” explains Armstrong, whose father was also a stunt coordinator on the film. “Then, they have to try and take that and remember it for the actual shoot.”

Armstrong worked closely with all of the stars in the movie, and says that it’s the goal to have the actors do their own stunts whenever feasible. The trick is keeping someone like The Amazing Spider-Man 2™ star Andrew Garfield in check, who plays Spider-Man and was eager to get his hands dirty on the set as often as possible. “Andrew does a lot of stunts and sometimes we actually have to rein him in more than he’d like just to keep him safe,” says Armstrong. Yikes! Take it easy there, Spidey – you’ve got a whole city to protect!
