Read an Excerpt:

The rolling hills and grasslands of Ismera were strange to her in the beginning. Now, after nearly a month of riding through them, they had begun to seem commonplace. What the High Clan Chief’s daughter was not prepared for, however, were the high turrets of the palace she was headed towards and the sprawling city of Ismer that surrounded it. Even more surprising than all that was the fanfare that greeted her when at last she reached the city’s high-walled gate.
A handsome man atop a white horse rode boldly out to greet her, without so much as a weapon drawn or a friend to watch his back.

They are much more trusting here of strangers than they are back at home, she noted. Unless, it’s only that they don’t consider me a stranger.

Mackenzie enShareed of Haldoram straightened her back, instinctively preparing herself to make a good impression. She felt her breath catch in her throat as he came closer and she realized that the man before her, with his sunny hair, tanned skin and bright blue eyes could be none other than the man she’d ridden all the way here to marry. She felt her usually flawlessly tanned skin flush an uncomfortable shade of red as she watched him dismount and walk the rest of the way to her side, a wide grin spreading across his face at the sight of her.

I didn’t expect him to be so handsome.  Kenzie found that as much as she might want to, she couldn’t deny the pounding of her heart or the fluttering in her stomach. I’m very fortunate to be attracted to him so easily.

If he took notice of her discomfort he didn’t show it, bowing over her hand and kissing it lightly. “Princess Mackenzie, let me be the first to welcome you to the City of Ismer.”

Taking a deep breath to calm her nerves, Kenzie reached for the marriage bracelet she’d woven herself for this very occasion. Unhooking it carefully from her belt, she caught his hand before he could take it away and swiftly wrapped the small, white-flowered wreath about his wrist, tying it with a practiced motion.

She could see in her husband-to-be’s eyes that he was confused, but she didn’t have time to explain it to him now. That would come later, after they were entwined together in their marriage bed. Right now, only the ritual mattered.

I have to do this now, she affirmed silently. Once I enter this city of theirs and am completely surrounded by Ismeran culture and politics it will be too late to marry him in my own way, in front of my people and by our customs. It’s the only way I will feel comfortable with his arrangement. I can marry him in the Ismeran way afterwards.

The barest nod over her shoulder was enough to bring Seraphina over. Her mentor and friend had accompanied her this far and now she played her part of the wedding ceremony by bringing forth the wreath that Prince Kadrean would place upon her head, sealing their arrangement and making them man and wife.

Aging Seraphina bowed before the Prince, despite the aching old bones she always complained of, holding out the wreath before her in offering.

“Take it,” Seraphina urged him, her English much less accented than Kenzie knew her own to be. “You must place it upon her head and say the words.”

Looking as confused as ever, the Prince took the woven white flowers and did as instructed.
“What words, exactly?”

“I be bhuragusthu de agamsa,” Kenzie spoke in her native tongue, making sure to properly enunciate each syllable so he could follow along.

“I be burr…” he began, trying his hardest to stumble through the words that were foreign to him, “a Gus who de Gamsa.”

That’s good enough, I suppose…  Kenzie frowned, regarding him. Though I thought that being the heir to these lands, he would have some knowledge of Gaelic.

“You may call me Kenzie,” she told him, dismissing her negative thoughts with a smile, before leaning in to kiss him, as was customary.

Seraphina and the other clanspeople who’d made the journey with her began to cheer, but their cheers were cut short when her new husband pulled back from her in surprise. “Whoa! I don’t know what’s expected between two strangers in the North, but here in the South it’s customary to save that kind of greeting for your husband.”

“Yes?”

“Yes…” he agreed, searching her eyes as if to gauge how much of the language she understood, “so I have a fiancée and you have a Prince who’s waiting very anxiously to meet you up at the Palace.”

Kenzie suddenly felt ill and more than a little dizzy. “You are not Prince Kadrean…?” The golden-haired stranger she’d just married wore a look of concern mixed with confusion. “Then who are you?”

“Uh…” He cleared his throat, made a little uncomfortable by the stares of the clanspeople. “Lord GarronD’Arbonne…at your service, Your Highness.”

An uncomfortable silence fell over them and the clansfolk, but Kenzie couldn’t find it in her to break it or fill it with anything meaningful. Her entire focus was on keeping herself from hyperventilating.
I just married this GarronD’Arbonne… Not the Prince; not my intended. Kenzie was in full panic at the gravity of the error she had just committed. How can I fix this?! The marriage bond is forever, never able to be undone… A man can remarry, under certain circumstances, but can a woman? Would they even allow such a thing?

My father will be so disappointed in me. He wanted this treaty between our lands to work. I’ve only just arrived and I’ve already ruined it. What am I going to do?!

“Well,” Garron cleared his throat again, “we should be going. I’m sure Prince Kadrean is eager to meet you.”

Gesturing forward, her husband held out his arm for her.

No, I mustn’t think of him that way, she admonished herself. He is my husband, but he’s right, I’m supposed to marry Prince Kadrean. There is a treaty; our marriage is law. It must happen…

Her Handyman

Believe it or not, some readers still don't have their copies of my romantic comedy chick lit, Her Handyman. Since that's the case, I'm offering another freebie promotion to get them in on the fun.

Fufu, her Chinese Crested dog, the guilty party who started the flood in the first place, is even stranger looking, and not through in the devilment department.

Read all about their adventures in the Her Handyman Freebie Promotion this Friday March 1 through Sunday, March 3!

6. Happy to Report

Girl of My Dreams
by Morgan Mandel
I'm happy to report that my second born book, Girl of My Dreams, went viral during the promotion last weekend, resulting in 16,465 downloads in the US, 3024 in the UK, 388 in Germany and 84 in Canada, with lesser amounts in other countries.

At one point, Girl of My Dreams reached #13 in Free Kindle Books, which is my personal best in KDP Select promotions! At 99 cents now, it's still doing well after the free promotion. Here's the link if you'd like to check it out: http://amzn.com/B0065R11QO

I hope everyone who clicked to download during the promotion will enjoy reading about the madcap adventures of the straitlaced assistant who became a reality show contestant. I'll be writing future romantic comedies later, because they're a lot of fun to do!

Next in the works is Blessing or Curse. Yes, I've been promising that for a while, but I'm almost through with my edits before it goes to the editor. I haven't paid too much attention to it, since I needed to give my already written books their due first. Blessing or Curse contains five separate romance stories about test subjects who take the Forever Young pill. This one's not a comedy, as it explores a range of emotions. Before doing another event, I plan on getting this book into shape.

As you may have guessed, authors don't have the luxury of just writing. Marketing is an important part of the business these days.

What about you? Do you spend time on special promotions? If so, what type?

7. My Second Born Book, Girl of My Dreams, Gets Her Event!

Girl of My Dreams by Morgan Mandel
Children, commercials, news - It seems the first of anything get the most attention.

When I heard Two Wrongs was accepted for publication, I was over the moon with joy. I'd finally achieved a goal I'd worked hard to get.

I set out to write another book, called Girl of My Dreams, and was also thrilled when that was accepted by the publishing company. Still, the second book took a backseat in the sense it wasn't my very first.

During a conversation with my mystery author friend, Austin S. Camacho, in the book room of a Love is Murder Mystery Conference, he convinced me that self-publication was worth the effort and expense. If I paid attention to what I wrote, then hired an editor and book designer,  I could get a quality book ready in  less time than the traditional route. Not only that, the cost was within my means. I'm grateful to him for that advice, since the older I've gotten, the more I don't feel like waiting. I've self-published Killer Career, Forever Young:Blessing or Curse and Her Handyman since our talk.

I digress. The purpose of this post is actually to mention my second born book, Girl of My Dreams, for which I received the rights back and got a brand new cover designed by Stephen Walker in the process, is taking center stage this Friday, Feb. 8, through Sunday, Feb. 10.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS - My romantic comedy about the straitlaced assistant's madcap adventures in a reality show will be FREE for Kindle or download to PC on Feb. 8 through Feb 10. See the links below to click for your freebie. I'd love to get tons of downloads so I can offer my second born her day in the sun!

8. Fortune Hunt by Morgan Mandel

After my Fortune Hunt, I was
happier than she is!

Some of you ladies may not relate to this. You're the perfectly organized ones, with spotless homes, and always put everything in its place. You'd never think of changing purses without completely emptying the first purse before using the next.

I feel sorry for you, because you're missing out on playing the Fortune Hunt.

Here's how you play it. When you change purses, you don't empty the first one completely. In your hurry to get the next purse ready, you leave stray items inside the first: receipts, shopping lists, paper money, especially singles, and a bit of change.

Then you forget about using that first purse, or decide you just don't like it as much. You don't throw it away. You put it in the closet. Well, this goes on with more than one set of purses, because, let's face it, if you love purses as I do, you'll have plenty to play the game with.

Now comes the really fun part. When you need money, you go on the Fortune Hunt. I went on one this morning and found sixty dollars in my purses, plus eight dollars in change laying around my desk in singles and change! I'll use it all on my next vacation.

A little something of how this ties in with books. It just so happens that Zoe, the heroine in my upcoming romantic comedy release, Her Handyman, is also not a neatnick. She's an artist, and is more caught up with painting than inessentials. Well, she doesn't have to go on a Fortune Hunt, because she's got tons of money, but at least I admire where her heart is, with her passion, not stuff that doesn't matter as much.

9. Her Handyman by Morgan Mandel Coming Soon!

Things have been hectic lately, since I've been working on a new romantic comedy, which I'm calling Her Handyman.

I hope to have it out and about by the end of August. In the meantime, I'm offering a sneak peak at the cover.

Yes, this one has a dog in it. It's a Chinese Crested.

The only resemblance between this dog and my own dog, Rascal, is they both are white with black spots.

This one is cute in an ugly sort of way, which fits into the story.

Now, I'm back to my writing.

10. Ice

Ice by Sarah Beth Durst. Simon & Schuster / Margaret K. McElderry Books. 2009. Review copy supplied by publisher.

The Plot: Cassie loves her life at a remote Arctic research station with her father. It's an isolated life of cold, of snow, of science, just Cassie, her father, occasional visits from Gram and a variety of visiting researchers.

On her eighteenth birthday, science ends and fairy tales come true. Cassie discovers that her favorite childhood story -- the whimsical tragic story of her mother being the daughter of the North Wind, Cassie the promised bride of the Polar Bear King, and her mother held captive by trolls -- is true.

The polar bear has come for her.

The Good: Cassie is an interesting main character. She's stubborn and driven; close to the father that raised her; and so content with life at the research station that she doesn't even want to go to college. Rather, she wants to complete a remote degree so she never has to leave the only life she's ever known.

Her mother's fairy tale past and bargains change everything Cassie thought she knew. Her mother didn't die in a blizzard; rather, Gail truly was the adopted daughter of the North Wind who bargained away her unborn child to the Polar Bear King in order to escape the North Wind and live with Cassie's father. The North Wind found the family and angrily attacked the family, blowing Gail to the country of trolls where she has been captive ever since.

So in other words, Cassie's only parent has lied to her. Not only that, but Cassie's relationship with her father is closer than many teens because it's not just been the two of them; it's been the two of them in a research station that rarely houses more than a half dozen people. Cassie has modeled her future on continuing in her father's footsteps.

All that is shattered, not only because the Polar Bear King has claimed her for a bride, but also because her father lied.

This is a fairy tale, so of course Cassie and the Polar Bear fall in love. This is a fairy tale, so at times (times being at night, in the dark) Polar Bear is human.

But Cassie doesn't lose herself in Bear and their love. She returns home, having arranged her mother's rescue, only to realize that not only is her mother a stranger, but her father with her mother is almost a strange new person. Pre-Polar Bear, Cassie was a child who, like a child, imagined never leaving home. Now, with return of the mother, Cassie is forced out of her childhood and into an adulthood of her own. Cassie isn't a pinball, bouncing back between parents and Polar Bear husband. Cassie even finds a way to bring her own interest in science and research to Polar Bear's destiny as a collector of souls.

Of course, life is not that easy. It never is, whether you're the human bride of the collector of polar bear souls or not. So just when Cassie settles into a happy life with Polar Bear, disaster strikes. Remember how Cassie arranges her mother's rescue from trolls? Polar Bear rescued the mother, in return,
