I don’t have anything to say today, really. I woke up a little late and feel behind with much work to do (Never enough time, ya know..?) I have been posting everyday, though, so I found this in the coffers of some area of the computer–a picture book page I worked on a few months [...]

I’m struggling to make a “cute” bat. Maybe there’s no such thing, eh?

So…Been busy lately and so I thought I’d share a “random rough” from the several projects I’m presently working on. Below is a rough cover illustration for a kids graphic novel. My challenge for the over-all project is to keep things loose and free, a lot like the roughs. Hahahahahahahahaha..! I say, get out of the [...]

Despite our present sub-zero temps, I still see squirrels outside my office window running along the electrical lines, or on the ground foraging for food. But none are wearing sweaters and toques pulling a sled. Too busy trying to stay alive and warm to recreate, I think. This is just a little portion of a page [...]

The above are some sketches for a new project I’m working on. I’m happily swamped again. Happy to have work; happy to be productive and busy; happy to be doing lots of drawing (though my right hand/wrist might take issue with that). Not so happy that I don’t have much free-time. I have litle time to [...]

Another random choice of a rough from a greeting card I’m working on. I like doing my roughs in a thick, almost clumsy digital calligraphy pen. It keeps me from getting anal about the look and to achieve that loose sense I long for. I should just stop at my roughs. : ) So much time [...]

This was a character study for something I’d been working on. One of my favorite tools in Painter is the Dry Ink Brush in the calligraphy section. It’s tough to control but I love how it makes me stay loose. I also played around with the digital watercolors on this. Colors seem more intense to [...]

The roughs for the spread, below. Couple of changes by the designer here and there, but, for the most part, it was good-to-go.
Hope you’re not going batty over these!?…you’re there, Paula! You’ve done it! These are by far some of the cutest bats I’ve ever seen (we’ve lots around here, and they don’t hold a candle to your’s) I love the lopsided grins, the amusing over-sized eyes, and yes…the clothes are quite a nice touch!! I see that your winged mammals are sporting their summer wear…adorably fashionable!
Your client should be quite pleased with your creations!!
That guy on the bottom dresses just like Mr. Jazz with the Hawaiian shirt.
Deb: Well, thanks! Still, they’re a hard animal to cutify!
Jazz: Ho! Then Mr. Jazz and I have the same fashion sense! He loves Hawaiian shirts, does he?
