I always look forward to our retreats for the amount of art that usually gets accomplished -
- which is generally a nice balance of new/experimental and 'work'. A lot of it was done outside (which seemed to invite the company of various 'critters' to participate)...
Experimental for me - can you believe I've never actually painted plein air before? I was *determined* to break that ice this year.... This was as far as I got in my allotted time.
I worked on some comps for a show based on The Day of the Dead...
I also experimented with some Master Copies/new mediums - underpaintings with acryla-gouache on clear-gessoed surfaces. Plus some progress on several other projects that will hopefully show up at some point.
And! the most interesting critter that came to visit was this
Snake Fly (we had to look it up. I've never seen one before!). It reminded me of a tiny dragon - with that great big head and a long flexible tail that it whipped and curled back and forth.
Once again, a magical retreat. And it's so long until next year's!
Yes, it is gorgeous and charming and yummy and relaxing on retreat,
but the primary reason we go is to *work*!
My critique group is quite diverse! There are members who work in oil -
- watercolor -
- sculpting -
- painting on silk -
- gelatin prints -
- series painting -
- and LOTS of collaborating.
It is a frenzy of creativity and commiseration. :-)
Another one of the delightful aspects of our retreats is the amazing, amazing eating! This is a group of artists, and they pretty much create food, like they create art:
(Gazillions of super healthy fillings for construct-your-own spring rolls...)
Another thing to so look forward to. :-)
The weather was *perfect* this year - all sun and lovely temperatures....
A nice thing about being at a single location 24/7 is that you do feel like you take some time to just chill...
We read, or sketch, or snack....
...or just enjoy the sunshine in our jammies!
Even the dogs get plenty of R&R between romps in the woods, or down by the lake -
but more on that anon!
We're back from our 11th annual fall retreat. Autumn retreat reports seem to need Loreena McKennitt to properly document. This time, appropriately, I'm choosing Ancient Pines:
.
It is a stunning, remote location, somewhere in the midst of Mount Rainier National Forest...
....along a lovely man-made lake....
The weather was idyllically perfect all weekend...
Sun, mountains, water and trees...
...some art happened too. :-) To be continued...
Packing up for our 11th annual POBL fall retreat!
Will be out of internet access until next week.
See you with a report on the other side!
Wonderful spread, pulls me right in!
(You really don't want us to wait until 2102, do you?)
Cheers,
Merisi :-)
Haha - good catch Merisi! (it was late when I posted :-).
