1. "...Featuring Norah Jones " - CD Review

Norah Jones has the kind of timeless voice that I never tire of hearing. Her mellow, rich melodies envelope like a warm, fuzzy blanket and carry the listener away to a calm and slower paced world. Every time I listen to one of her albums I have the urge to grab a cup of coffee, sit in a comfy chair and observe the world as time passes by. The talented singer shows off her musical versatility in her newest album, ...Featuring Norah Jones. The album released last week on November 16th and is a collection of various collaborations with well known artists including the Foo Fighters, Ray Charles and Dolly Parton.

The 18 songs on the album were recorded over the last decade and showcase a wide range of musical styles. Some of my favorites include the "Virginia Moon" (with Foo Fighters) with it's jazzy, bossanova beat and "Ruler of My Heart" (with Dirty Dozen Brass Band), a bluesy song sung with attitude and heart. And, of course, November is the ideal time to listen to Norah's version of "Baby It's Cold Outside" (with Willie Nelson). The two banter back and forth together so perfectly, they could have wrote the spicy song. Another favorite toward the end of the album is a cover of an 80s song originally sung by Roxy Music, "More Than This" (with Charlie Hunter). Norah's sultry, jazzy style gives the song a whole new life. If you're a Norah Jones fan, make sure to add this album to your Christmas list.

And make sure to check out the interactive widget below. It is probably one of the coolest widgets I've come across. You can click on the names to hear snippets of the songs and watch videos of Norah discussing the various collaborations on the album.

2. Sarah McLachlan - Laws of Illusion: CD Review

Sarah McLachlan's CDs were some of my favorites in college including Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing. I can't tell you how many times I must have listened to those albums, and I still pull them out every so often. Her songs just flow with thoughtful lyrics and hauntingly beautiful melodies. This week McLachlan released a new album, titled Laws Of Illusion. It's been seven years since she released all new material, and I am delighted to have the chance to review it thanks to One2One Network.

The image on the cover of Laws of Illusion shows the singer happily over the moon, but once you start to listen to the lyrics closely it becomes quickly apparent that the image is an illusion and the songs are anything but happy. I haven't payed much attention to McLachlan's personal life, and had no idea that she had split up with her husband a couple years ago. Many of the emotion filled songs on this album deal with the pain, the frustration and the loneliness as she comes to term with this heartbreaking change in her life and the hope for tomorrow. I'll admit that at first I was actually kind of disappointed in the overall theme of the album, mostly because I felt that I couldn't connect with the songs. I'm still happily living the fairy tale. But, McLachlan is truly an artist, a true artist paints what she feels, and there is no denying the paintings in this album are works of art and that her voice and familiar style reside within each and every one of these songs.

The album starts off with a realization of love gone wrong in "Awakenings." "Illusions of Bliss" is one of my favorites and just flows with pure sounds, a classic McLachlan melody. "Forgiveness" sounds somewhat along the lines of "Adia" with lyrics "Through the year we'd had it all / The midnight whispers, the midday calls / This house of cards it had to fall / You ask for forgivness, you're asking too much. " The bouncy and upbeat "Loving You is Easy" is the album’s first single and is another one of my favorites. The harmonies blend beautifully in the hopeful, final song "Bring on the Wonder."

3. Busytown Mysteries series on CBS / Richard Scarry books

“I’m not interested in creating a book that is read once and then placed on the shelf and forgotten. I am very happy when people write that they have worn out my books, or that they are held together by Scotch tape. I consider that the ultimate compliment.” - Richard Scarry

Richard Scarry's books get plenty of attention in our home. Let's just say we have one of those taped together books of his, well loved and read often. See the photo to the right-case in point! Every time the kids and I read one of his books we discover something new. Scarry's books contain so much detail and the his animal character illustrations are darling. Our favorites include Huckle Cat, Sally Cat, Lowly Worm and, of course, that sneaky Goldbug. We never get tired of searching for Goldbug.

The books have been translated into 30 languages over the last 40 years and over 150 million copies have been sold. Now, kids can watch their favorite characters in the new TV series Busytown Mysteries. The series, produced by Cookie Jar Entertainment, just starting airing on weekends on CBS. (Check here for local air times.) Huckle Cat and Lowly Worm, along with other friends try to solve mysteries in Busytown. They search for clues, ask the questions and use their reasoning skills - who, what, when, where, why, how? The episodes feature 2-D animation and the characters look like they've walked off the pages of Scarry's books.

Thanks to One2One network we received two episodes to review:
"The Falling Fruit Mystery" - Huckle and friends try to figure out why the cherries have fallen down from farmer Patrick's tree.
"The Dragon Hunters" - There are reports of a fire-breathing dragon in Busytown. Huckle and friends investigate to find out the truth."

As soon as I started playing the episodes, my preschool daughter excitedly exclaimed, "Hey, I have those books!" She pointed out Goldbug and Lowly Worm and a few of her other favorite characters. She watched both episodes all the way through and then decided that she wanted to solve mysteries, too. The series is a huge hit with her and we are planning to look for it tomorrow morning on our local CBS station.

We also took some time to check out the interactive Busytown Mysteries website at http://www.busytownmysteries.com. Kids can choose their favorite character, pick a Busytown car and travel around Busytown visiting the countryside, wharf, park and downtown. My daughter'

4. Disney Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - DVD/Blu-ray Release

Mirror, mirror on the wall, what's my favorite movie of all? According to my mom, the first movie I saw in a movie theater was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I don't really remember that experience, but I do know that I have always liked Snow White. The scene where Snow White cleans the dwarfs' house with the animals help always makes me smile. And the dwarfs - Doc, Sneezy, Grumpy, Happy, Bashful, Sleepy and Dopey - they're just so loveable.

I can hardly believe that Snow White, the first full-length animated film produced in the US, has been around since 1937! And now it's making history again. Today, Oct. 6th, Disney launches it's all new "Diamond Collection" products with the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Diamond Edition Combo Pack (both Blu-ray + standard DVD discs in a single package). The Blu-ray format offers a high-definition viewing experience wth amazing pictures and sound, games, and other activities on a more scratch resistant and kid-proof disc. Even though we don't own a Blu-ray player, we received a Snow White Combo Pack to review. This combo pack is a great value because it offers buyers both the standard DVD format and Blu-ray together in one package. For those that own Blu-ray players, the inclusion of a standard DVD will allow them to watch their movie other places like car DVD players. And the combo pack offers flexibility for those of us that don't own a Blu-ray player yet but plan to buy one in the future. (Blu-ray players play both Blu-ray discs and standard DVDs).

Since we don't own a Blu-ray player I can't comment on the Blu-ray extras, but we watched and enjoyed the single DVD. The bonus features on the regular DVD include The Princess and the Frog Sneak Peak, the song "Someday My Prince will Come" sung by Tiffany Thornton, and the option of Audio Commentary with Walt Disney. For those absolutely not interested in Blu-ray, the Deluxe 2-Disc Classic standard definition DVD of Snow White releases Nov. 24.

The Disney website features a fun flash site Explore the Kingdom game. Find 15 Diamonds and gain entrance to the Dwarfs' Mine.

With this re-release, I bet Snow White will be a popular princess costume for Halloween. About 6 years ago, I dressed up as Snow White for Halloween. See my picture to the right! My mom made the costume. Do you think I make a good Snow White?
