I've just had my comp copy of another book I've illustrated for Cambridge University Press, like the ones I did last year it was done for the Discovery Readers range.
This one, A Little Trouble in Dublin was 25 illustrations in all, and after the approval of my rough pencils it was pretty much an illustration a day schedule.
Precocious teenage twins Andy and Mary get into a scrape with some criminals who run a forged euros racket in Dublin. Here, they've ended up at the Garda station where I designed a "watch out" poster, that gets mostly obscured... it was too visually distracting when it was where the map of Ireland is now, so I sacrificed it, the effort wasn't wasted though as it helped continuity in the next image where the twins had changed their clothes...
Four merit points for anyone who spots the two "in" gags I've included in the previous images and a gold star for anyone who gets the gag in the following one.
Don't ask if you're right though, I'll never tell!

The Cambridge University Press books I did illustrations for earlier in the year are going to be published soon and I received my complementary copies last week...
I thought I'd share a couple more illustrations from Tales of Terror and Tasty Tales here too.
I'm pretty chuffed with them, 26 illustrations in total and the reproduction on all of them is damn near spot-on!

Did this for my lovely wife's Valentine's Day card.
There's not much to say except that really.
Other than this marks the first whole year of being self employed as an illustrator...
That's cause to celebrate!

The current DrawerGeeks topic is Jack and The Beanstalk:
Didn't have much time for this again...
I was going for a "not much more than a hill of beans" and a "credit crunch" - bad deal thing...
In the end I went for this cheap Deal or No Deal gag. You win some, you lose some... I think I lost this one!

This is a quick digital self portrait done in photoshop... I used the in-built camera in my mac to take the reference shot then sketched this out... start to finish was about 1hr 20mins.
There's some stuff wrong with it but in the time frame it's an ok likeness I think. If the hair looks a bit weird to you, I've got that bit right, I really do have Reed Richard's hair but I'm not quite as flexible as Mr. Fantastic!

I've mentioned I've been reading The Cancer Journals before, rather than provide a review, I've decided I really want to invite a dialogue about some of the points she raises.
She writes, "My silences had not protected me. Your silence will not protect you." This is in part about how she will deal with her fears and how she will continue her work despite her cancer. But this isn't just about facing her mortality, it is about how we are silent because of judgment and separation. She continues, "And where the words of women are crying to be heard, we must each of us recognize our responsibility to seek those words out, to read them and share them and examine them in their pertinence to our lives."
Do these ideas speak to you? In what ways? What do you remain silent about? When you write, are you seeking out a community of women? Does your work ever reflect a feminist or political view?
what a little trouble! nice designs!
They look great - not sure about a gag in the last panel but I assume Lynott and Grafton refer to Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy. I'm guessing it is more subtle than that, like Mick's Grill, so... Grafton's Taxis.... nope can't get it.
Anyway top work.
Lovely stuff here, Kev! Really polished work. Think I got the gags but I won't spoil it for others!
