Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? Are you ready for the newest retelling of the Snow White fairy tale? The aptly titled live-action movie, Mirror Mirror hits the big screen tomorrow (March 30). Starring Julia Roberts as the evil Queen and Lily Collins as Snow White, from the early reviews this kid-friendly version sounds like it's going to be a fun if not a bit quirky film to watch! Other cast members apparently add to the humor including Armie Hammer as the dashing prince and Nathan Lane as the queen's bungling servant. The film, released by Relativity Media, promises CGI special effects, lavish costuming, spunky girl power and a Bollywood-inspired dance sequence ending.

It's been too long since my daughter and I have gone on a mother/daughter outing. I think perhaps we'll take an afternoon together and check out this enchanted, princess-y fare. I admit part of the reason I'd like to see this one is because I'm curious to see if Julia Roberts can successfully play a mean-hearted queen. Snow White also happens to be one of my favorite fairy tales.
In celebration of the release, Relativity Media has kindly offered to give away a
Mirror Mirror prize pack to a Brimful Curiosities reader. One (1) winner will receive:

THE BOOKS (Little Brown Books for Young Readers)
HOP: The Chapter Book
About the book: Who will fill the Easter Bunny’s shoes? E.B. Jr.’s got big plans to be a big music star, and Fred, who never had plans to be anything, finds himself with more responsibility than he is used to in this chapter book
My take: This is a nice read for good elementary school reads. Pre-school and early elementary readers will enjoy this as a bedtime read aloud as well.
HOP: Chicks vs. Bunnies
About the book: The Easter Bunny gets all the glory, but what about all the chicks who do all the work making Easter baskets? This is a bright, colorful and humorous look at Easter’s cute and rivaling icons includes punch-out Easter egg stands featuring characters from the movie!
My take: This one is fun! Great pictures will keep the little ones engaged and it even keeps with egg holders at the back of the book so you can tie this read in with some coloring of Easter eggs.
HOP: Meet the Easter Bunny
About the book: Easter Island is home to the Easter Bunny’s magical workshop—where do you think Santa got all his good ideas? Chocolate bunny carving, jellybean polishing, and adorable chicks and bunnies are just a few of the fantastic sights to see on this lively tour of Easter in the making.
My take:This little book is pretty cute as well. Again, the brightly colored and cartoon-like illustrations will keep the little ones engaged. Throw this in the Easter Basket with some marshmallow peeps (you’ll have to read this one to find out why!!).
HOP: Hoppy Bunnies
About the book: This adorable and interactive Easter board book features hoppy bunny finger-puppets for read aloud Easter fun.
My take: My little girl loves finger puppets so this one was her immediate favorite! If your family celebrates Christmas, you will recognize the theme of this book pretty quickly.
HOP: Counting Chicks
About the book: Easter chicks Carlos and Phil teach numbers as they put together an Easter basket just for you!
My take: Your basic 1-10 counting board book that would make a nice Easter gift for the baby or toddler in your life.
All together, a nice set of books for young children. But now that you’ve seen the books, check out the film below. My daughter is still a little young for the movies but many kids will be asking to see this movie over the Easter holiday. You can learn more about the film and watch the trailer below.
About the movie:
Blending state of the art animation with live action, Hop is a comedy about E.B. (voiced by Russell Brand), the teenage son of the Easter Bunny. On the eve of taking over the family business, E.B. leaves for Hollywood in pursuit of his dream of becoming a drummer. He encount
"Rapunzel, let down your golden hair
That I may climb it like a stair."The above lines are from a version of The Brothers Grimm story of
Rapunzel. This month we plan to read as many picture book versions of the classic story as possible while we wait for the release of the movie,
Tangled. At the end of this month, on November 24, 2010, Walt Disney Pictures will release their 50th full-length animated feature, a new, unique story based on the fairy tale,
Rapunzel.
I recently read through some of the advance press notes about
Tangled, and it is unclear to me just how closely the Disney version will follow the classic tale. Obviously, Rapunzel and her famous hair play a major role. In the storybook version, the villain is a witch. According to the movie's press notes, the villain is written a little differently -- "Mother Gothel is the only mother Rapunzel has ever known. By stealing Rapunzel as an infant and raising her in the tower, Gothel ensured that she alone would have access to Rapunzel’s magical hair, which she uses as her personal fountain of youth." And, where's the prince? Well, there's Flynn Rider, the thief. Rapunzel makes a deal with him and the apparently both escape the tower together. Guess we'll have to wait and see the film before trying to make comparisons. I'm most excited to see what Rapunzel's chameleon, Pascal has to say. His character is certainly not in the original fairy tale!
Like I said, in the meantime we plan to check out some of the many various children's books about Rapunzel and try to post about some of them in the future. Look for updates! SurLaLune Fairy Tales has listed a pretty comprehensive list of versions if you're interested in doing a little research of your own:
http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/rapunzel/books.htmlSynopsis (Provided by studio)
When the kingdom’s most wanted—and most charming—bandit Flynn Rider (voice of Zachary Levi) is taken hostage by Rapunzel (voice of Mandy Moore), a feisty teen with 70 feet of golden hair who’s looking for her ticket out of the tower where she’s been locked away for years, the unlikely duo sets off on a hilarious, hair-raising escapade filled with adventure, heart, humor and hair—lots of hair.
This might be a first! The book Sleepy Kittens, labeled "as seen in the film Despicable Me from Universal Pictures," is a movie tie-in title that is really and truly featured in the actual movie. Talk about amazing and clever product placement. I love it when characters in a movie read or discuss books. When Meg Ryan's character mentioned Noel Streatfeild's children's books in You've Got Mail, I sure wanted to read them all. I bet I wasn't the only one. The 3-D, animated comedy Despicable Me releases in theaters today (July 9th) and, yes, the board book with cute finger puppet kittens is in the movie.
Three little kittens loved to play. They had fun in the sun all day. Then their mother came out and said, "Time for kittens to go to bed!"
Sleepy Kittens (Despicable Me) by Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio, Illustrated by Eric Guillon; LB Kids (May 2010); ISBN 9780316083812; 10 pages; Board Book
Book Source: Review copy provided by publisher
In
Sleepy Kittens, a pink mama cat announces that it is bedtime for her three chubby little kittens. The kittens have other ideas and try their best to stall the inevitable. Smart mama cat, not to be outdone, has a few tricks up her pink paw and lovingly soothes them to sleep. The short text is written in rhyming verse.
If you watch this
movie trailer, about two minutes into the video the Sleepy Kitten book appears. Gru, the villain, is reading the book to the orphaned girls. Ok, ok...so the actual book isn't exactly the same as the one in the movie but it is pretty darn close. The three finger puppets are there but you don't manipulate them through holes like Gru does. And, the text isn't exactly the same either but still it is pretty cool that kids can actually read the story for themselves and interact with the finger puppet kittens. Kids can even make the kittens drink the milk out of the milk bowl, just like in the movie. My kindergarten-aged daughter thought the book was fun to play with and even made up her own story while operating the puppets. My toddler son isn't able to manipulate the puppets as well as his older sister but seems amused by this novelty. One thing I noticed -- the roly-poly kittens have such short little legs I'm surprised they can do anything but sleep! The three finger puppets, made out of flat, felt-like material, are glued into the back cover and cannot be removed.

Yes, I do plan to watch this movie. My favorite version of a book is the old televised version (now impossible to find, but I have it on VHS) of Peter Pan, starring Mary Martin as Peter Pan. I love how the same actor plays Mr. Darling AND Captain Hook, and the music is FANTASTIC! It follows the original story much better than the Disney version (although I like it, too!). I just discovered your site -- thank you! My email address is bobbiberta @ charter.net (no spaces).
I'll watch it because I love Julia Roberts!! My favorite adaptation right now is Once Upon a Time :)
