Welcome to Weekend Links! This week was the official final day of summer and fall is starting off with bang with the occurance of a Lunar Eclipse or “Blood Moon.” Basically when the Earth casts its shadow on a Full Moon and eclipses it, the Moon may get a red glow causing many to refer to it as a blood moon. Rumor has it that tonight will be the night to view it so our household is buzzing with anticipation!
The moon, solar system and stars are always a great source for learning opportunities for kids so in honor of list weekend’s lunar eclipse, here are some great booklists and resources that are “outer space” themed. Enjoy!
It’s almost OVER! Don’t forget to enter to WIN our ginormous Back to School Library Book Bundle Giveaway!
Right on time for back to school, KidLit TV is teaming up with Pragmatic Mom, Jump into a Book, Franticmommy and Multicultural Children’s Book Day to give parents, teachers, and librarians a chance to win a multicultural book bundle for their school library.
School libraries play an integral role in the life of students. Many students can cite their school library as a place where a love of reading and learning is fortified. Throughout the country, budgets for school programs are being slashed, school libraries have been heavily hit. Hours for library time are cut in some schools, and non-existent in others. Furthermore, the tight budget impacts a school librarian’s ability to secure funds to purchase new books.

Tax day approaches – everyone's favorite day of the year. Tonight I plan to stay up past midnight and watch the day arrive. Not because I waited until the last minute to do my taxes (although there's that) but because tonight there will be a total lunar eclipse.
Most of North America will be able to see the eclipse and since the moon is close to full it should be pretty dramatic. Because of the timing of the eclipse, sunsets and sunrises in other parts of the world will make the moon look blood red. Kinda cool! If you have cloudy skies or too many city lights to see it, The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles will broadcast the eclipse live starting at 9:45 p.m. PST.
This is also the last week of the blog tour for WISH YOU WEREN'T. Here are the planned stops.
MONDAY
The Book Cellar: Erica posts an interview about my reading and writing habits.
Books and Needlepoint: Kristi will post her review of Wish You Weren't.
WEDNESDAY
Book Loving Mom: Amy will post her review of Wish You Weren't.
I want to thank all of the bloggers who hosted me during this tour. Book bloggers are seriously the coolest people. They don't make money from this. They do it because they love books and I'm totally honored to have been part of so many awesome blogs.
Disney Lunar Eclipse:
Kickin’ It, Mighty Med, and
Lab RatsThere will be a full eclipse of the moon on Monday night and into the early, early hours of Tuesday morning. Some people believe that a lunar eclipse can cause bizarre things to happen. Have you ever noticed that the word “lunatic” has the same root as “lunar?” And that Luna Lovegood is kind of, well, loony? Makes you think, doesn’t it? Anyway, on Monday, April 14th, Disney XD will air special episodes of 3 shows. We’ve got the details about those episodes plus interviews with some of the actors about the strange things they HOPE will happen on Monday night!
Kickin’ It:
“Invasion of the Ghost Pirates”
(8:00 pm – 8:30 pm E.T./P.T.)
With an impending lunar eclipse, an old Seaford legend surfaces about a ghost pirate returning to seek his revenge on the wharf after a lunar eclipse 300 years ago led to his ship crashing into the shore. Jack makes it clear he doesn’t believe in ghosts, but his skepticism is put to the test.
Mighty Med: “Night of the Living Nightmare” (8:30 pm – 9:00 pm E.T./P.T.)
Kaz and Oliver are exhausted and stuck working the overnight shift during a lunar eclipse, when it is rumored that the freakiest patients come to the hospital. When Neocortex checks in with an illness that unintentionally traps people in their worst nightmares, Kaz and Oliver desperately try to stay awake and figure out how to save everyone from their nightmares.
Lab Rats:
“Principal from Another Planet”
(9:00 pm – 9:30 pm E.T./P.T.)
Leo is determined to record the bizarre events he believes take place during a lunar eclipse. Davenport is skeptical until it appears that an alien life form has taken control of Principal Perry’s body.
Q: What strange or wacky thing do you wish would happen as a result of this eclipse?
Jake Short:
(a.k.a. Oliver in Mighty Med) I wish it would start raining my favorite candy – Starburst.
Paris MaryJo Berelc: (a.k.a. Skylar in Mighty Med) I hope the eclipse will give me the ability to breakdance over water.
Auggie Isaac: (a.k.a. Gus in Mighty Med) I wish that just when the eclipse was happening, everyone got a superpower. That would be awesome.
Dylan Riley Snyder: (a.k.a. Milton in Kickin’ It) I wish that I would gain awesome superpowers during an eclipse. I would either use them to help with my daily life, or just show off. It would be nice to be very strong, or to fly, or even to control time. I think an eclipse could be powerful enough!
Tyrel Jackson Williams: (
a.k.a. Leo in Lab Rats) As the moon passes in front of the sun, I gain the ability to fly. My life is complete!
What do YOU hope will happen as a result of the lunar eclipse? Leave your wishes/predictions in the Comments!

Oh, what a difference 3,000 miles, 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and a good telescope can make.
Here's a photograph of the August 27-28, 2007 lunar eclipse that I took through a powerful telescope set up in the Anza-Borrego Desert near Borrego Springs, CA. We camped in the desert that night so we could view the eclipse in one of the darkest places in the country. It was 99 degrees after the sun went down.
And here is a photograph of tonight's lunar eclipse that I took from my back deck. No fabulous telescope. No coat. 14 degrees outside. It's tough to hold a camera steady in this kind of weather. Maybe you noticed...
I'd try again, but it's cold out there. Does that make me a fair-weather astronomer? My August lunar eclipse story is here, for anyone who missed tonight's show and would like to experience one.
Friend and filmmaker Seth Worley is at it again.
Don't know how much I can spill about it, but I was asked to craft a prop for his latest film. It's supposed to resemble a page torn from an old book on Tennessee ghost lore....
The legendary....GHOST REX...!
After I turned that in, Seth wanted to know if I had done any comic book covers that he could use to populate the kid's tent.
I'm sending him my TrogHammer comic ...and while rooting around I found this guy in a dark dank corner of the archives. I dusted him off and brought him out into the light...
Say hello to Kid Frankenstein!
