It’s almost quitting time here in EDT so let’s leave the week with something FUN for a change.
Why just do a comic book based on a classically of it time TV show when you can reinvent it as an acid trip that bends time and
space? And hooray for licensors who let you get away with it. Miami Vice: Remix by Joe Casey and Jim Mahfood is anything but a dull TV show comic…it’s an audacious tale on tropes and icons, and a gem in the Lion Forge line-up.
Last month, the TV classic Miami Vice came back in a whole new way with the neo-noir, ultraviolet, action-packed Miami Vice: Remix. The first issue left readers cliff-hanging but never fear — the next installment of car chases, palm trees, and mutation-inducing designer drugs is here!
When we last left Crockett and Tubbs (still Miami’s coolest cops) they were in a sticky situation with some South Florida zombies high on Miami Bath Salts. Now they’re in hot pursuit of the dealer of this horrific nose candy, which leads them to punching cracked-out monsters in the face while zooming through Florida Turnpike traffic. Just another day at the office! But while one situation explodes, another simmers; someone who’s got serious beef with our $600-suit-wearing-heroes claims that Crockett’s got a serious debt to pay — and they’re here to collect!
Writer Joe Casey (Godland, Wildcats, Adventures of Superman) and artist Jim Mahfood (Tank Girl, Ultimate Spider-Man, Grrl Scouts) take their off-the-wall trip to South Beach to the next level with another high-energy, neon-soaked installment, in-stores next Wednesday.

Lion Forge, the mostly digital but going to print comics company, picked up some nice 80s licenses like Punky Brewster and Miami Vice.
In the modern era of licensing, it isn’t about likenesses and wooden stories, but about reimagining things.
So Lion Forge hired Joe Casey and artist Jim Mahfood to do Miami Vice. Bringing Crockett and TUbbs to the modern day.
Since both Casey and Mahfood are certifiably bonkers*** this is awesome.
***That was a loving joke. Both are sane, responsible adults. Please do not sue me, Joe and Jim.
Lion Forge, the digital upstart that brings you Punky Brewster comics, will be on hand at NYCC, with the premiere of their animated effort, Deep Sea 7. In addition, MK Reed, Joe Flood, Jonathan London, Carl Reed and Yaya Han will be signing at the booth.

St. Louis based Lion Forge Comics has been around for a couple of years with a lot of ambitious plans, some well known licenses and a line of here-to-fore digital comics. But recently they announced they are getting into print, with IDW picking up their Air Wolf and Knight Rider comics. They’ll also publish a print version of a comic inspired by MMA fighter Quentin “Rampage”Jackson called Rampage Jackson: Street Soldier. That should be PLENTY wacky. More Lion Forge titles are impending from IDW, possibly including such classic licensed fear as Miami Vice, and Punky Bewster.
Lion Forge also announced a deal with AG Properties, the likening division of American Greetings, to put out three kids comics as part of the Roar kids line: Care Bears, Madballs and the Disney XD animated series, Packages from Planet X.
“Our library has grown immensely in the past year bringing a unique selection of comic books to readers of all ages,” said David Steward II, CEO, Lion Forge. “Bringing the lovable characters from Care Bears with the humor and action from Madballs and Packages from Planet X to our collection further diversifies our offerings while teaching and interacting with our younger fans in new, creative ways.”
Lion Forge will have a booth (#1903) and a panel with Jackson, writers Joelle Sellner, David Gorden and Brandon Easton, and Yaya Han and wrestler Chavo Guerrero. IN other words, just a typical panel at San Diego.

New comics company, Lionforge, showed off an intriguing selection of licensed and original comics at Wondercon last weekend. The company’s licensed comics include modern adaptations of popular 80′s and 90′s TV shows, Saved by the Bell, Punky Brewster, Miami Vice and Knight Rider, while original series include comics based on six time WWE champion, Chavo Guerrero Jr. and another with MMA fighter, Rampage Jackson as superheroes.
The editorial team is helmed by industry veterans, Adam Staffaroni, who worked in editorial at Boom! and DC comics, and Shannon Eric Denton, a longtime staffer at DC’s now defunct Wildstorm imprint (Staffaroni is working on the YA and All Ages Roar Imprint for Lion Forge). Lion Forge is currently a digital only outfit with titles available for purchase on iverse’s comics plus app and the kindle for amazon but company insiders hinted that wider distribution will be available soon.
Michael Fleischer is watching this thread with great interest.
Sounds pretty cool. Makes me wish Marvel still got guys like Mahfood to do an occasional issue or special or mini-series for them like they did back in the Jemas era.
Can’t be any worse than the 2006 movie. If Michael Mann had concentrated on plot holes and dialog as much as he did on his shiny new digital cameras, we might have gotten somewhere.
I guess Benjamin Marra was busy? I like Casey and Mahfood, but I’d much rather see an original comic than a tie-in to an extinct TV show.
