Australian readers overlook poetry to our loss. Fortunately there are a number of excellent publishers who publish poetry either exclusively or as part of their list. Many of our literary awards have poetry sections and these remind us that poetry deserves attention. The Queensland Literary Awards shortlist, for example, will be announced this Friday, 11th […]

May was packed full of exciting book events, a number linked to the Sydney Writers’ Festival. My SWF week began with the evening announcement of the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards at the Mitchell Library. It was a great opportunity to catch up with people and meet new authors. The other awards evening I attended was […]

Describe your latest book/project/work. Something Rich and Strange is a collection of selected stories, including three stories previously unpublished in book form. Introduce one other author you think people should read, and suggest a good book with which to start. Donald Harington is as underrated as any America writer I know of, and I'd suggest [...]

A pantheon of eminent Australian poets descended onto a marquee slated on a grassy tennis court in leafy Sydney. The canapés, wine and congenial company were to celebrate the launch of esteemed poet, Geoffrey Lehmann’s new book, Poems 1957-2013 (UWA Publishing). Geoffrey and his vivacious wife, Gail Pearson, hosted a large but attentive group of […]

Thousands of fans lined up in Beijing to speak to Les Murray, Australia’s foremost living poet, according to Jim Alexander Director of CAL who opened the literary breakfast.
CAL is funding Les Murray as the UTS Writer-In-Residence. Lucky UTS students. Professor John Dale Head of Creative Practices at UTS organised this lovely event at the Queen Victorian tea rooms.
Les read from his works in between some witty quips and sincere statements. His story about his autistic son’s observations of his life was moving. His son said that ‘I’ve got to get smart.’ Well, his son has got smart. Les also regalled a great fan about his fishing exploits. Fishing is a time when he feels at peace
I LOVED Les’ line from his poem TRIVIA – ‘A fact is a small compact faith.’
