1. Share the Joy - Giving during the holidays with a little help from Lands' End

'Tis better to give than to receive. Have you taken the opportunity to give in some way this holiday season? Earlier this month I received an exciting email from Lands’ End. They offered my family the amazing opportunity to participate their Share the Joy program. We received a $100 gift card with the instructions to use it to "Share the Joy" and help those in need through charities and activities of our choice.

Throughout the year both my husband and I give of of our time and talents by volunteering with various organizations. We also give monetarily. But, up to this point, we really haven't discussed in detail with our children what it means to give - to share the joy. This year we involved them directly in the giving this holiday season.

As a family, we decided to use our gift card and share the joy locally by giving to a charity and sharing the joy with an individual. I obtained a wish list of items from our local violence safe program that helps provide assistance to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. My family went on a shopping trip together and bought several items off the wish list including diapers, toothbrushes and soap. My daughter spent quite a bit of time picking out a nice hairbrush. It was a wonderful bonding experience and a great way to help the kids think of others instead of themselves. The other half of the money we decided to share with a neighbor who recently lost her husband to cancer. Holidays can be so hard for those that have experienced the death of someone close, and we wanted to let her know that we are still thinking of her. We hope she enjoys "Sharing the Joy" in some way in memory of her husband. We made an angel card to accompany the gift card using this Candy Cane Angel Template.

Lands' End has a tradition of also giving a few of their employees the chance to Share the Joy. You can read about it on the Lands' End Facebook Page.

Thanks so much to Lands' End for this opportunity. I grew up near Lands' End headquarters in Wisconsin and can personally attest as to how much the company does for their community. They have a long legacy of giving. I also full-heartedly recommend their products because I know they strive for quality and everything comes with a full guarantee.

2. Wordless Wednesday - Russian Mammoth Sunflowers

Way to grow! We received a free packet of Russian Mammoth Sunflower seeds with one of our Lands' End purchases this spring and decided to try to grow them. Wow, did they ever grow. The tallest plant measured 9 ft - 9 inches last time we checked and reached as tall as the railings on our deck.

3. Full to the Brim

Busy weekend here in the Brimful home. My son is ill with a cough, my in-laws are here for a visit, and I took all my small kids' clothes over to a friend's house for the garage sales this weekend. Unfortunately the weather here is awful and not many are willing to brave the cold and rain for bargains. So I'm tired, cold and I'm not feeling very productive anymore this evening. That means no Full to the Brim this week. So sorry. I did "tweet" several book giveaways earlier in the week, so check my twitter site (iambrimful) to enter those.

Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars by Sharon Lovejoy book - (Ends 5/10)

I currently have a great giveaway posted for a book I absolutely love, Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars by Sharon Lovejoy. It's a super resource for fun and interesting activities to do with young children. My favorite chapter is titled "Kitchen Garbage Garden." There's a whole section on sprouting spuds, and I'm proud to say that we've managed to produce a strange looking "alien" potato perfect for using as a seed potato. (See it in the photo to the right?) My daughter can't wait to cut it apart and try growing it in a container. We're going to try forcing a sweet potato to leaf out in a vase with water, too. The giveaway for this book ends on Monday so take some time and enter for a chance to win a copy for yourself!

If you live in or near Wisconsin, be sure to stop by the West Towne Mall Sears store in Madison tomorrow (Saturday, May 8th) for the Lands' End Way to Grow Event with author Sharon Lovejoy. Kids can decorate pots, plant sunflowers, learn about the wonder of worms through hands-on exploration and meet Sharon Lovejoy. (She's also signing books). Sounds like a great time! 4. Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars by Sharon Lovejoy - Book Review & Giveaway

Going to my grandparents' farm is always a special treat. Outside we have the chance to experience the wonders of nature with acres and acres to explore, rocks to climb, a winding, mesmerizing creek to splash in and garden full of treats. Inside their home, the kitchen is always full of bustle as grandma whips up sweet rolls, cookies and a rainbow of canned produce and jams.

I have so many wonderful childhood memories of visiting my grandparents and spending summer days watching them and learning their tricks. They grew up in a vastly different time, when TVs and computers did not exist and as children they learned to love nature and its marvels and cherish time together as a family. They made sure to engage their grandchildren in similar experiences. When we visited them we did not sit in front of the TV but instead participated in life-enriching activities, played games and lived in tune with nature.

"When you're sharing nature with a child, you'll find that even a short walk through your backyard will yield a crop of fresh discoveries and questions. Start a tradition of asking, "I wonder what's going on outdoors today?" - Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars by Sharon Lovejoy
Not all grandparents (or parents) live on a farm, but that doesn't mean that they can't also inspire and create a fun-filled environment for children to explore. Sharon Lovejoy's newest book, Toad Cottages and Shooting Stars: Grandma's Bag of Tricks is a treasure trove of wonderful ideas, crafts, cooking and gardening activities and the perfect resource to use with young children. The whimsical and beautifully illustrated book is divided into several interesting sections:

  • The Neighborhood Naturalist (includes a mudpie recipe for attracting butterflies and instructions to make a moon phase flip book)
  • Kids in the Kitchen (yummy recipes like Summer Berry Soup and how to make a solar oven)
  • Kitchen Garbage Garden (setting up peek-a-boo plants and growing a citrus tree)
  • Kids in the Garden (tips on container gardening, herbs, engraving pumpkins and planting a bale garden)
  • Preparing Camp Granny (inspiring imaginative play and building child friendly places with fairy houses, faerie mailboxes, book baskets and more)
  • Rainy Day Activities (crafting ideas like rain sticks, toad cottages and making a worm hotel)

I'm always on

I still need to buy a few more school supplies yet. My daughter will attend her first day of school in a few weeks. Lands' End offers great back-to-school products from backpacks to clothes. My daughter already has a nice collection of their cotton jersey dresses perfect for play but still dressy enough to be considered "dress clothes."

If you'll be on twitter tonight from 7:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. CT, be sure to join the Lands' End Twitter Party. (hashtag #landsend) For more information and to RSVP, visit 5 Minutes for Mom.
