The Brit Zone continues, sort of, with a new announcement from Titan Comics. This week Titan unveiled a new co-publishing deal between themselves and Atomeka, which will put out ‘Monster Massacre’. This anthology will feature stories all about – you guessed it – monsters. On top of stories from creators like D’Israeli, Ian Edginton, Ron Marz, and Dave Wilkins, the book will also include a Joe Simon/Jack Kirby story, ‘The Greatest Horror of Them All’, taken from Black Cat Mystery.
The cover is far too rude for me to post on The Beat, so instead here’s a page or two of interiors.
Put together by writer/artist Dave Elliott, the anthology’s full list of credits are:
Joe Simon/Jack Kirby, Andy Kuhn, Dave Dorman, Mark A Nelson, Ron Marz /Tom Raney, Dave Elliott/Alex Horley,Vito Delsante/Javier Aranda, Dave Wilkins/Dave Elliott, Jerry Paris/Arthur Suydam/Dave Elliott, Ian Edginton/D’Israeli, Alex Horley and Steve White.
A little bereft of female creators perhaps, but that’s a fine line-up. There are ten stories collected in total, along with two art galleries.
The anthology will be released in September, and be day-and-date digital.

In a better world, I would not have learned of Joe Simon’s 98th birthday today via Facebook at 8 PM.
In a better world, there would be multiple news articles streaming through Google News chronicling the amazing contributions Joe Simon has made to comics, an American art form.
In a better world, network news would report on how he co-created Captain America, how he helped pioneer the genres of romance and horror comics. There would be a slightly embarrassing picture of Brother Power the Geek and Prez.
In a better world, publishers of his work would celebrate his past work on their homepages. In a better world, comics news sites would offer week-long posts chronicling his achievements, lauding his influence on the Golden and Silver Ages of comics, and reviewing his latest creation.
Instead, the world is a bit imperfect. But superheroes show us that the world can be a better place, not because of fantastic superpowers, awesome weapons, or fancy costumes, but because the person underneath the union suit strives to be a better person, helping others to better themselves. Stories can inspire, stories can resonate, like mysterious Vita Rays which beam directly into a reader’s subconscious. The Grand Comics Database lists over 3100 credits for Joe Simon, and that’s a lot of inspiration, whether he wrote, drew, edited, or published comics. He still inspires, as seen recently.
May he continue to inspire for many years to come!

Want to see what celebrity you look like? Click here, upload your photo, and be prepared for the results.
I wondered how correct my casting of Hugh Grant as Herman Munster was (see earlier post), so I ran Herman's picture through the database.
Hugh wasn't even on the list! Myfacerecognition-celebrity matches posted Magic Johnson as the celebrity who most resembled Herman. John Travolta, Dr. Phil, and Matt Dillon were on the list, too. But the most surprising Herman Munster look-alike was Meg Ryan, who appeared on the list above Matt Dillon!
So Meg, think about it. Men have traditionally played the best monsters: Frankenstein, Dracula, and Hannibal Lecter--even King Kong and Godzilla were male. The time is now, Meg! Break this field open for women. Hermoine Munster. Herman Megster.
Go for it, girl!
Love this. A sweet story, and Hembeck! I read the Fantastic Four Roast to shreds when that came out
Role models and inspirations are awesome when they turn out to be truly what you thought they were.
I miss Fred Hembeck. Such a fun cartoonist. Great story.
“I miss Fred Hembeck.”
