Traveling up along the western side of Conception Bay, we stopped and gawked at the view in Brigus South & Cupids. An Ice Cappuccino from Tim Horton’s kept me cool as we meandered our way up to Harbour Grace. There I did a few sketches while we all walked the boardwalk. Among the things I [...]
For those of us who “can’t draw”, looking at what you artists produce and hearing you say it’s off because of perspective or whatever, does sound self deprecating because it looks so great to us. And I can see your point – you view it from the perspective of someone who does draw and you see what’s wrong with the picture. I just look at this stuff and think, wow, that’s sooooo cool. I choose not to see the flaws.
Every time I try to draw I get terribly frustrated because it’s all wrong, always, so I just put it aside. You’d think I would be able, at my age, to get it through my thick head that even Van Gogh didn’t start by cranking out masterpieces…
Jazz: Thanks so much for your comment! Yes, I see what you mean. Kind of like the person who’s five pounds over-weight complaining about how “fat” they are. I roll my eyes.
My intentions in the conversation were, I think, to level the playing field; I wanted my FIL to not see it as something he couldn’t do, because it’s not true. Your last paragraph is a perfect example. I feel that exact same way many times: I draw; don’t draw as good as I’d like to; get frustated; want to put it aside. What’s the difference between me and you? Different issues in regards to ability…amount of hours spent at the sport of sketching…That’s it. I guess what I’m trying to do is express that sketching/drawing (a la Danny Gregory) is a pasttime that we all can do and enjoy. Because he’s right. The scale should be weighty on the pleasure of the activity, not as much the end result. I hope some of that, at least, is making sense.
It makes perfect sense – plus I’m a fan of DG, so I get that. My only problem is that every time I’ve tried to sketch I’ve gotten pissed off at myself because I don’t do it well. Which is absolutely stupid since – duh – I haven’t drawn since I was seven and a teacher told me that my house was all wrong and I never drew again. How, 40 years later could I pick up a pencil and draw well? Why do I expect that? It’s totally stupid and illogical but there you go.
