Gorgeous red and gold warmth entwines with thrashing, raw waves and spray to tell the tragic tale of twenty nine souls struggling against the fury of Lake Superior and of the polished brass bell that forever sounds their farewell.

Warm, realistic illustrations and generous, unimposing text vividly recreate the thrill of befriending an injured fox pup and the bittersweet satisfaction of her eventual return to the wild. I don’t think our two daughters could be more excited about this story if they had lived it themselves!

Running out to purchase this book!
I loved your comments about how the professional mariners are represented in this book and how they dealt with the problems that were thrown at them. These are important lessons for youth that I believe are powerfully taught through the maritime experience, both firsthand and through literature.
Monday I start a 2 week sail training program for at- risk underserved youth in which we incorporate Joseph Conrad’s classic short story Youth, a Narrative. In 2 weeks, I will be running a corporate leadership program where we will use Melville’s Billy Budd. Sea stories convey such powerful messages for all of us. Thanks for sharing this great book for even younger readers.
Keep up the great work!
Peter,
Thank you so much for sharing your enthusiasm for life, for the maritime experience, for books and for JOMB.
I would love to know what you think of the book. There is so much more we could have touched on (the opening which elegantly describes the source of the Great Lakes, the historical context of Bell-Bottom pants, platform shoes & the Hustle; the gorgeously bleak almost entirely black spread of the sea after the ship is engulfed….). Maybe you’ll send us your impression.
I wish you all the best in your generous and inspiring work with youth and corporate leadership.
Happy Sails to you,
Andrea
