Yesterday was my personal best writing day that I've ever had. As part of Precision Editing's 4 hour writing contest, I sat down, got rid of all distractions and wrote like crazy for four hours straight. I ended up writing 9424 words in four hours, which is more than I usually get to in week. It was enough to nab me the 1st place in the contest. Even more than a prize, I'm glad to have realized what I can accomplish when I put my mind to it. NaNoWriMo shouldn't be too hard to win this year with this nice early lead. Congrats to everyone who participated. The real prize is the progress you make in writing. They hold the contest every year, and if you didn't participate this time around, I encourage you to give it a try next time.

Writing tip of the Day: Minimize distractions. When you set aside time to write, turn off the TV, close your Facebook, resolve to check your email later. Writing time is precious and you need to make sure to capitalize on it. My life is insanely busy between raising my kids, spending time with my wife, working 40 hours a week, and being in a very demanding (but very fun) choir, my writing time is at a premium. I have, however, been able to finish several manuscripts these year, and I think it comes down to a matter of commitment and focus. Make a promise to yourself that you will make the most of your writing time and reap the rewards.
