1. Monday Map: Murfreesboro

Happy June 1, everyone! It was 38 degrees outside this morning, but the sun is shining, and I'm sure it's got to warm up. (We did have a beautiful weekend.) On to a busy week around here...

6. Monday Map: Take Me to the River (The Cape Fear River, That Is)

I can't watch that movie with Robert DeNiro... what is it called? Is it "Cape Fear?" Anyway, I admit it, I'm a wimp. When the music turns scary, I turn the channel.

Speaking of scary-ish, tune in tomorrow for an episode of My Adventures with Wildlife, from this past weekend. I think I'm going, um... batty. (Hint, hint!)

9. Monday Map: North Carolina Cat Story

My very first cat came from North Carolina. Years ago, fresh out of art school, I worked in the art department of a golf trade magazine. One nice perk was that I was able to assist on a golf fashion photo shoot at Pinehurst Resort. (Talk about luxurious... too bad I don't golf!)

We were shooting in the stables one day, where a barn cat had recently had kittens. The hair and makeup woman fell in love! She managed to bring a kitten home in an open box on the plane. (Can you imagine that happening now?) But after about a week back in Connecticut she decided she couldn't handle him any more-- so I took him. His name was Bandit, he was shiny and black, and he was one of the sweetest cats I've ever known.

(*Note: Pinehurst isn't located in Carrboro. Actually, Carrboro has nothing to do with this story, apart from the fact that it is in North Carolina. A tenuous connection, but, hey-- it's Monday.)

10. Just One More Book! is one year old today

Just One More Book recording setupJust One More Book was launched one year ago today with the release of our first podcast episode; a review of the children’s picture book, Bill In A China Shop. It was a different world for JOMB. Our audio quality was terrible and we hadn’t found our rhythm. We watched our statistics and hoped for more than thirty listeners per show.

As the year progressed, we invested in some new equipment, changed our review style, interviewed a lot of amazing people, gave away several autographed books, corresponded with people who are equally passionate about great children’s books and watched our listener base grow to an average of 6,000 downloads a week. Later this week we will release our 200th episode.

Thank you for being a part of the Just One More Book community and for helping to make this an incredibly fun first year!

Don’t forget that we will be giving away an autographed copy of Lois Ehlert’s Eating the Alphabet during the first week of September. To qualify, send a review of one of your favourite children’s book (five-minutes or less) as an MP3 file (or text review) in email to [email protected], phone it in to our listener feedback line (+1-206-350-6487) or leave a two-minute MyChingo by August 31, 2007.
