EFII’s own
Marc Scheff just launched a new collaborative project today called 52 Shades of Greed. 52SOG is a fully illustrated deck of finance and OWS-themed playing cards with drawings from 28 top illustrators, art directed by
Marc Scheff and
Daniel Nyari.
Marc and Daniel had a project to make a set of playing cards. It was pro bono, and limited in scope. Daniel suggested adding just a few more artists to add some more oomph to the deck. The project quickly ballooned to 28 illustrators from around the world, 56 cards, a huge fundraiser, and an incredible amount of buzz. The deck is beautifully illustrated and currently available exclusively through Rocket Hub for a limited time. When the fundraiser is complete, there will be a limited set sold at the Society of Illustrators’ Museum of American illustration.
This project is a testament to what we can create together, when we get off the island.
This reporter has learned through reliable sources, on deep background, and totally off the record that *wink wink*, a certain Matt Groening will be Lynda Barry’s ”super secret, special guest” for the Friday night Artist as Cartoonist keynote at this year’s ICON7, The Illustration Conference. I can also report that Ms. Barry and Mr. Groening go way back, meeting at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA in the 1970′s. Maybe they’ll talk about that, maybe they won’t. I don’t know. You’ll have to show up and do your own reportage. And please, whatever you do don’t tell anyone on Twitter or Facebook you heard it from me. Tell them you heard it on TMZ or something.
This much I can tell you, ICON7 will take place in a place called Providence, RI on June 13-16, 2012.
Last week, we announced the creation of the new EFII Team, as the next step towards making the EFII Network (Escape from Illustration Island, Illustration Age, etc.) the premier resource for Illustrators, Art Directors, and other creative professionals. Today, we’d like to welcome 2 new fellow Illustrators who are joining the team as Assistant Editors:
Marc Scheff
Marc Scheff is an illustrator whose work has appeared in publications and software including Spectrum, ImagineFX, Corel Painter 11 & 12, The Gorilla Art Fare Art Book, and more. Marc recently co-founded Awesome Horse Studios, the free livestream demo/crit channel. He has also spent the last few years making pretty things at game shops like EA and Gameloft. See and learn more at: www.marcscheff.com
Michael Byers
Michael Byers is a freelance illustrator living in Guelph, Ontario with his fiance and two cats. He spends most of his time in his studio creating whimsical images for editorial and advertising clients. He loves to draw, drink coffee, and collaborate with other illustrators, art directors, art buyers, and anyone else who loves to create. – michaelbyers.ca
Thanks to Marc and Michael for joining the team!
Hey fellow Illustrators!
I’m very excited to announce that the EFII Network (Escape from Illustration Island, Illustration Age, etc.) is taking the first steps towards being a group-run effort. I’m not only relieved to share the reins after more than 2 years of running the show almost entirely by myself, but also eager and grateful for the chance to welcome some new perspectives to our growing network of resources for Illustrators.
The best part is, this move will help to ensure the EFII Network as a sustainable source of inspiration for years to come.
Here’s a look at the current EFII crew:
Thomas James – Editor/Art Director
Thomas James is an Illustrator whose work has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, Seven Days, The City Paper, The Chicago Reader, The Portland Mercury, and many others, and has been recognized by American Illustration. He is also the Editor/Art Director of the popular Illustration website and podcast, Escape from Illustration Island, and is proud to serve on the Board of Directors for the ICON Illustration Conference.
Kelly Weed Stanley – Assistant Editor
Kelly is a freelance Illustrator whose work has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators and showcased in a number of galleries around Utah. Some of Kelly’s current clients are the stores Flora and Crafty Wonderland in Portland, Oregon.
Marjolein Caljouw – Assistant Editor
Marjolein Caljouw is an illustrator/artist. She helps people who need illustrations for magazines, books, apps, etc. but also makes (wall)paintings with acrylics and oilpaint. Visit her website here: http://www.marjoleincaljouw.nl/
Mark Kaufman – Assistant Editor
Long story short. Mark Kaufman is a partner at Vivitiv, an issue oriented design firm based in Seattle. His illustrations have appeared in publications nationwide including The New York Times, The Progressive, The Stranger, and The Oxford American. – drawmark.com
Thanks to these fine folks for helping to make the EFII Network a reliable (and growing) resource, and thanks to YOU, our fellow artists

ICON is pleased to announce the dates and location of the 7th International Illustration Conference! Mark your calendars and join us for the premiere Illustration event of the year.
As many of you know, Escape from Illustration Island traveled to last year’s ICON6 Illustration Conference to bring you lots of great audio and video coverage of the event, which you can still enjoy here.
One fantastic result of that adventure was that EFII’s Editor, Thomas James, is fortunate to be serving on the board of directors for ICON7. Things have been happening behind the scenes, and we’ve been eager to share some of the details of next year’s event.
The good news is, the dates and location for ICON7 have been officially announced:
June 13-16, 2012
Renaissance Hotel

Hey Illustrators!
If you’re located in or around Portland, Oregon, please come on down to the Oregon Convention Center this Saturday, April 16th for the Stumptown Comics Fest. This event is special because it celebrates comics and illustration with the creators as its focus.
Portfolio Workshop
This year, I was fortunate to be invited to conduct a Portfolio Building Workshop to help artists who want to take their online portfolios to the next level. I’ll be discussing the most effective ways to make a good visual impression and leaving as much time as possible to address specific questions that artists might have.
Join us for the workshop on Saturday, April 16th at 4pm in Room A104.

Hello fellow Illustrators!
Today I’m very excited to share some industry-related news and activities that I’ve been fortunate to be a part of here at Escape from Illustration Island.
ICON7 Illustration Conference
As you may remember, I recently produced a collection of audio and video coverage of this year’s ICON6 Illustration Conference. I was grateful for the chance to work with John Hendrix, Mark Heflin, and others towards our mutual goal of sharing resources and inspiration with our fellow artists.
In addition, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be playing a more involved role as a member of the Board of Directors for the upcoming ICON7 Illustration Conference. I am thankful to have the opportunity to continue to contribute to the Illustration industry and my fellow Illustrators in any way I can, and I’ll be trying hard to help make ICON7 a success.
I’ll be sure to share more details about the conference as things materialize, so stay tuned.
New York Illustration Portfolio Show
I was also recently asked to lend a hand as an advisor to the Graphic Artists Guild’s New York Portfolio Show, a five day, comprehensive, national showcase of original, professional illustration.
This sounds like a great event for Illustrators and Art Buyers alike, so check out the site for more info here.
HOW Magazine Top 10 Sites for Designers
Today I discovered that Escape from Illustration Island has been recognized as one of HOW Magazine’s Top 10 Sites for Designers for December, which is always great as a way to reach even more artists with the resources on the website, podcast, etc. Thanks to Senior Editor Megan Patrick for the nod.
Inside Illustration Competitions eBook
On another note, things are coming along nicely on my next eBook, Inside Illustration Competitions, which takes a behind-the-scenes look at the way competitions are run. I’ve been fortunate to receive the assistance of several people who have been involved in both organizing and judging Illustration competitions, such as Charles Hively, Mark Heflin, Luke Stoffel, Scott Hull, SooJin Buzelli, Stephanie Glaros, Edel Rodriguez, Anita Kunz, and others.
I’m looking forward to demystifying the world of Illustration competitions and helping my fellow artists to understand them and make the most of them, so stay tuned for updates!
EFII in 2011
As 2010 comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the past year and thinking about how EFII can be even better at sharing resources, encouraging community, and contributing to the industry in 2011. There are already some new plans in the works, and I look forward to the journey ahead.
Thanks again to everyone who is helping to make Escape from Illustration Island the best it can be.
Cheers,
Thomas James

August was another big month here at Escape from Illustration Island, with 80,000 views, the conclusion of EFII’s coverage of the ICON6 Illustration conference, a monster list of 150 Useful Resources for Illustrators, and more articles, interviews, and resources for Illustrators everywhere.
I also gave a sneak peak at an exciting new multi-media project that will be available next week, called EFII: Year One, as well as the latest giveaway.
In case you missed it, here’s a look at some of the best new additions to EFII in the month of August:
Podcast Interviews
Articles
Next Tuesday, September 7th marks the official release of EFII: Year One, an eBook, Audiobook, and Special Edition Podcast Episode commemorating the first year of Escape from Illustration Island, the website and podcast devoted to providing resources and inspiration to Illustrators everywhere.
And if you know me, you know I love giveaways!
So, I’ll be awarding this 3-piece bundle to 5 lucky winners as part of the celebration.
How to Enter
Simply leave a comment letting me know that you want to be entered, and I’ll be selecting 5 winners at random using Random.org, to be announced on the official release date, Tuesday, September 7th. The deadline for entries is this Friday, September 3rd at midnight EST.
What is EFII: Year One?
As Escape from Illustration Island has grown, I’ve gotten more and more requests to produce an eBook version of the site, to keep people from having to search through the archives to find all the best, most useful content.
So, I’ve responded by compiling 60 of the best business articles into both an eBook and an Audiobook format, with an exclusive added bonus!
eBook
With the 171-page eBook, you’ll be able to take EFII with you, read it on your iPad or other e-reader, or print it out and read the articles that are relevant to you at your leisure. The articles cover topics such as promotion, building your website, working with clients, and a lot more.
Audiobook
The 3-hour audiobook version of the eBook is for all those podcast junkies out there who love to fill their heads with useful content while working in the studio. You’ll get everything that’s included in the eBook, narrated by yours truly.
Special Bonus
As an added bonus, I’m including a special edition episode of the Escape from Illustration Island Podcast, only available as a ‘thank you’ to those who purchase either the eBook, Audiobook, or both. The episode is a very special ‘best of’ mp3 file that compiles some of the most useful and inspiring content from the first 50 episodes of the EFII Podcast, including some of your favorite guests such as Drew Struzan, Scott Hull, Steven Heller, Marshall Arisman, Leif Peng, Christoph Niemann, Gary Taxali, and more.
Something for Everyone
I’ve done my best to make this multi-media bundle as entertaining and educational as I can to both newcomers to EFII and the many artists who have followed along for the first year. In addition, I’ll be offering it at a sweet deal of a price to make it as accessible as possible to everyone!
I’ll be sharing all the final details during next Tuesday’s official release, but that should give you a basic idea about what you can expect from EFII: Year One. Keep an eye on Escape from Illustration Island and the special page I’ve created for the new project here.
Enter to win in the comments section of this post, and good luck!

“We don’t have to feel helpless. We can help. Our small actions together will ripple outward.” - Kelly Light
The above quote from Illustrator Kelly Light’s Ripple blog, which so far has raised almost $8,000 for animals affected by the Gulf Oil Spill in the United States, perfectly captures the motivation behind this latest movement amongst artists in the online Illustration community.
Artists tend to come together to support worthwhile causes, whether it’s intellectual property rights or environmental causes like the oil spill.
Kelly is leveraging this great potential to do her part to support something that she believes to be of great importance, and she has graciously agreed to share her thoughts here at Escape from Illustration Island:
“Over the past year I have gotten to know a few sketch card artists. I tried doing some this past Christmas as a promo give away on my own art blog. The day I watched footage of birds so oil soaked they looked like aliens- I was moved to do a few and sell them on my own blog. They sold quickly and soon many illustration friends were emailing me to help with their own cards- so I started a separate blog for them called “Ripple“. It had about 130 cards before I hooked up with illustration Friday- in one week we jumped to 640 cards. – Holy Mackeral!
The best part is that the enthusiasm of the online art community for this new project is producing real results.
“To date we have raised $7,800 – 1 sketch at a time. Illustration Friday was a big help. SCBWI – The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators have helped a lot as well. The amazing thing is to see the ground swell – the “ripple” effect… I guess- of word of mouth- and online person to person promotion of it. I’ve tried to tweet- blog- facebook about it a lot too.
The 2 Non Profits are linked from the blog page: the IBRRC – they clean oiled birds and IMMS – they clean mammals.

All donations are direct and no money passes through my hands. The donators CC me their donation confirmation to buy a sketch.
I had heard from a woman cleaning birds- that it took 3 bottles of Dawn dish detergent to clean 1 bird. Each bottle is $3. So – thinking about it that way we have bought 2,500 bottles of Dawn to clean roughly 834 birds. That’s how I like to think about it- we are helping to keep cleaning centers in supplies.”
Want to get involved? Here’s how:
“[Artists should] email me @ [email protected]. They send me a jpeg along with a blurb about themselves and their links. I post it up and when it sells- I send them the address to mail it to. The art can be sketchcard size 2.5″ by 3.5″ or a little bigger. I just advise keeping it small- it’s easier to mail it. The
