1. Tor/Forge to Drop DRM on eBooks

The publisher of Tor, Forge, Orb, Starscape and Tor Teen revealed that they will sell all their eBooks without DRM. The Tor/Forge imprints are part of the major publisher, Macmillan.

According to the company, the switch will happen by July and the digital books will still be available (DRM-free) at “same range of retailers” that sell Tor/Forge eBooks. Last year, Tor author Charlie Stross declared: ‘DRM has proven to be a hideous mistake’

Publisher Tom Doherty had this comment: “Our authors and readers have been asking for this for a long time … They’re a technically sophisticated bunch, and DRM is a constant annoyance to them. It prevents them from using legitimately-purchased e-books in perfectly legal ways, like moving them from one kind of e-reader to another.” (Via Sarah Weinman)
