I recently finished illustrating Volume 4 of Jenny Nimmo's Charlie Bone series for it's Japanese edition. "Charlie Bone and the Castle of Mirrors" should be out on the streets of Japan very shortly.
Like the previous volumes it has around 30 black and white drawings to accompany the text, plus character studies and colour cover. Here's a sneak preview of the cover artwork.
You know, John, this would be a good topic for an article. Do Japanese publishers give you guidelines for the Japanese versions? Do the original publishers have a say in how it is portrayed? Or are you given free reign? What do you as an illustrator living between two cultures see as the differences in styles, expectations, tastes the readers here are looking for? You don't have to answer my questions! But consider writing something if you haven't already. I think others would be interested.
