What’s the best way to give a strong first impression? Chip Kidd, a book designer at the Alfred A. Knopf imprint, delivered a TED talk on “the art of first impressions — in design and life.” The video embedded above features his entire talk.
In his 2012 TED Talk, Kidd stated that a book cover provides a first impression on what readers will be consuming. Throughout this new lecture, he focuses on the importance of inspiration, clarity, and mystery. He also showcases the jackets he created for Only What’s Necessary: Charles M. Schulz & The Art of Peanuts, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki & His Years of Pilgrimage, and Fraud: Essays.
Kidd further elaborates on the subject of first impressions in a TED Books project entitled Judge This. Over at the TED blog, he shares several pieces of “advice for young writers and designers.” To glean more wisdom from this famed artist, check out the TED talk he gave in 2012.

The new trailer for The Peanuts Movie has arrived, and it’s a 2015 release that hasn’t gotten a lot of notice, but based on what we see below, this might be an animated year-end surprise (though I’m not sure “Baba O’Riley” was the best music choice here).
Commemorating the 65th anniversary of Charles M. Schulz‘ seminal creation, here’s the synopsis for the new outing for Charlie Brown, Snoopy and company:
Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the beloved “Peanuts” gang make their big-screen debut, like they’ve never been seen before, in state of the art 3D animation. Snoopy, the world’s most lovable beagle – and flying ace – embarks upon his greatest mission as he takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis The Red Baron, while his best pal, Charlie Brown, begins his own epic quest. From the imagination of Charles M. Schulz and the creators of the ICE AGE films, THE PEANUTS MOVIE will prove that every underdog has his day.
The Peanuts Movie hits theaters on November 6, 2015.

“I have always believed that you not only cast a strip to enable the characters to do things you want them to, but that the characters themselves, by their very nature and personality, should provide you with ideas. These are the characters who remain in the feature and are seen most often. The more distinct the personalities are, the better the feature will be. Readers can then respond to the character as though they were real.” Charles M. Schulz, PEANUTS: A Golden Celebration. For not being a writer or much of a cartoonist in the sense of the strip format anymore, I think about this bit almost daily.

From what I can see, the script seems to be pretty fun, not deviating too much from the comics.
However, the 3D (or 2.5D) animation style irks me – I could’ve (perhaps) accepted claymation, but this just looks artificial and not really matching the drawings.
Wouldn’t it have been much better if they’d just kept it in traditional 2D animation, and save the 3D only for Snoopy’s fantasies?
Or am I an old coot?
I think this looks pretty good and the 3D renderings look good too. It reminds me of the Peanuts vinal dolls from the mid-60s I had as a kid. However, I wish whoever is responsible at Complex for pairing up the ads before these trailers would consider the content of those ads. I had to go to YouTube to send a link to my nephew. I watched the link here twice and both were liquor ads (one for Cuervo and the other for Modelo.) It’s Happy Hour, Charlie Brown!
So good! looks really fun and the animation is really great!
