1. First Memories

If you wanted to get all philosophical about it, you could say that each of us is a collection of our own memories and that, therefore, our very first memory is the moment we first become “ourselves”.  You could think of your first memory as the exact moment that the person you know as yourself was born.  I’ve invited everyone at MJM Books to tell us about their birthdays: I wonder how much these birthdays reveal about the people we turned out to be…

Erin first remembers her dad pushing her around the house in a cardboard box and making car sounds as he pushed the box along.  She also has early memories of my mom tucking her in at night.

I share Erin’s automotive origins.  My first memory is of Mike and Matt constructing a sports car for me out of one of my old diaper boxes.  They made more than one, apparently, as there is a picture of me in a cardboard Busch nascar racer, but the one I remember was a Ferrari?  My only clue is that it had pop up headlights, a feature that my brothers delighted in and I pretended to know why it was exciting.

Mike’s first memory features a subject a little more… natural.  I’ll let him explain…

“When I was very young (maybe 3 or 4 years old) our family dog was a Great Dane.  As you can imagine Great Dane’s are pretty big; and one thing that goes along with big dogs is big… er… umm… well poop.”

“During the day I would usually play out in the back yard but this could often be difficult as I’d have to dodge the many ‘land mines’ scattered about.”

“Being the bright young lad I was, I decided that I would mark each pile in the backyard with a small stick to flag its location.  That way, when my dad came home from work all I had to do was show him the ‘flags’ in the  yard so he could clean up.”

Problem Solved.

Problem Solved.

“In retrospect I suppose I could have probably picked up the ‘waste’ myself but then again what young boy can resist the urge to make a game out of something as cool as giant piles of dog poop?!”

Sara’s first memory also features some family pets, but it seems to be quite a bit more idyllic…

“I remember sloshing around under a shady tree in a tiny, blue plastic kiddie pool with my younger sister in my grandparent’s backyard. I smelled the charred, spicy aroma of hot dogs while my grandpa grilled and listened to my grandma laugh while her and my parents talked. My grandparents’ two lhasa apsos, Toby and Muffin, sniffed around the yard, occasionally poking their wet noses into the pool to say ‘hello’.”

Matt also remembers water… too much water. Matt’s traumatic “birthday” memory involves learning how to swim.

“I was so frustrated at Mom and Dad, they would stand three feet apart in the pool and one would let me go and the other would call out, ‘Swim to me Matt, come on,’ all the while backing away.  So, by the time you reach them, you’ve learned how to swim, but you’re crying from the intense fear of drowning, and a deep sense of betrayal.”

Good times.  Good times.

2. Five Things That a Person Can’t Live Without

I’ve put together a list of things that you absolutely need,  starting from least to greatest.

  1. Cellphones- The addiction to these is so great, that this guy attached one to his ear. That’s commitment for you. This is one of my more humorous suggestions.
  2. Food- I don’t know about you, but a big mac certainly goes a long way. After missing a few meals, you start to slow down and experience hungry pains. After a week you would be dead. I had planned to put a picture of someone starving right below this, but I couldn’t stand to look at it. Those were the most gruesome pictures I have ever seen.
  3. Game systems- Even with the 300$+ price tag, people still buy them. The PS3 cost 499 dollars, while the Xbox360 cost 280$. It’s a serious addiction. I would know, because I suffer from it
  4. Pets- Everyone has pets. Cats and dogs and lizards and fish and every other animal under the sun. These pets seem to be essential to life. Without that dog, who else would we have to pet all the time? They’re lots of fun and great for guard duty. Cats are more like a royal family. They don’t do what you want them to do, unless they want to do it.
  5. Cars- I’ve gone to a school, looked at the high school parking, and seen  a red Ferrari. This shows just how obsessed we are about cars. Nascar doesn’t help either. Everyone ways huge Hummer’s or Ferrari’s, but I can’t see why. It’s not like that’ll save your life if you get hit by a mac truck.

Good day (or night) to you, and good luck surviving life’s perils.

4. Guys Lit Wire Set to Launch June 1

Colleen at Chasing Ray said it was cool to cut and paste this from her blog, so I'm doing it. This is such an awesome idea, and I can't wait to see how it catches fire. (Note: the Sarah mentioned is NOT me. I'm Sara. Sarah would be the talented blogger from Finding Wonderland.)

And one more thing. I know there are guys who read my blog. You know you want to do this. Think about emailing Colleen and getting in on the ground floor of this sweet start-up. (I think that's guy-speak for pretty please?)

________________________________________________

Just to update you on the idea that several of us have been bouncing around for a web site recommending books to teenage boys. We are working on the design and putting together a big list of daily posters. But first the name:

Guys Lit Wire!!

All credit for that one goes to Sarah (who will likely also want to mention some help from Tanita). I was banging my head hard against the wall on this and Sarah came through big time. So kudos to her limitless creativity which will be big time on display on the site. Wait until you see the header she is working on for the main page - it is some kind of awesome.

We are planning to go live by June 1st and update every Monday - Friday with a different daily poster. We hope to have 21 folks on board dedicated to posting at least once a month. This way we get tons of new content from lots of different points of view, which is what I really wanted. We will likely run multiple daily posts as the site evolves but readers will be able to count for sure on at least one new post every weekday and that is what we will build a lot of the site's readership on.

There will be book recommendations, author interviews, literary commentary, a rant or two (I'm sure) and lots of other good stuff. The goal is to cover a ton of different types of books from across the literary spectrum so we can become a good resource to actual teenagers as well as anyone seeking to find books for teen boys. (And if the girls want to visit we are happy to have them, but boys are our target audience.)

Right now everything is moving forward quite nicely but we do still need some folks to commit to posting. If any of you would like to participate in Guys Lit Wire (or recommend someone) then please let me know. We are especially looking for guys so we can keep our group balanced (and because guys know a thing or two about what guys like to read... :) Please send me an email if you can help. 5. You and Me and E.B.: Changing the World

Yesterday was about Having a Good Time. Today is about Changing the World. (See quote from E.B. White above, or if you're reading this in a feed and can't glance up, here.)

What are the book/literacy/youth-related causes you support? I'd like to know.

Here are a few of mine:

Military Child Education Coalition

Plan International

Beyond 4 Walls Book Drive

I'm also interested in the following projects, but haven't acted upon them yet:

The Campaign for Drawing (sponsors The Big Draw and other projects)

Open Books (a literacy bookstore not yet operational)

KinderHarvest (rescues and recycles children's magazines to donate to families)

I'd like to compile a list of all the projects KidLit Bloggers (and readers) support. (Or is there one already? Someone tell me!) I would call it:

The Very Big, No-Kidding, We're Changing the World, You Bet! Good Deed List.
