1. Summer Reading OVER

Summer reading is now over!! I’ve neglected the blog long enough (and started to feel very guilty). There was so much to do.

What’s happened since the last post?

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows came out
  • Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer came out
  • Comic-Con happened
  • Got hooked on the Alex Rider series
  • And, on the Percy Jackson series

Looking back over the past posts, the topic of books got lost. So, I’m refocusing now on books and areas directly related to books. Doing this will, I hope, keep me posting much more often.

Good to be back!

2. Canada Day

I believe there is a distance I have wandered,
To touch upon the years of,
Reaching out and reaching in,
Holding out, holding in.
“Elsewhere” -- Sarah McLachlan (Website ; WCid ; Wikipedia ; Encyclopedia of Music in Canada ; myspace)

1 July is Canada Day (Fête du Canada) [Wikipedia] a national holiday [Canadian Encyclopedia] -- formerly known as Dominion Day – that commemorates the establishment of Canada as a dominion (i.e. a self-governing country that retains close ties to the British monarchy) on 1 July 1867.

We extend warmest greetings and best wishes to all of our Canadian readers, the wonderful folks who work in the thousands of cultural institutions across Canada – with a special shout out to our OCLC participating institutions and the WebJunction institutions in Canada – and our colleagues at OCLC Canada. (For more information on libraries in Canada, see, for example, the “Libraries” article in The Canadian Encyclopedia, or do a search in the WorldCat Registry).

Happy Canada Day!

3. Poetry Friday: Poems for the First and Fourth

A Happy Canada Day and Happy Independence Day to all, with some poems to mark the occasions. Rivers of Canada by Bliss Carman (1861-1929) O all the little rivers that run to Hudson's Bay, They call me and call me to follow them away. Missinaibi, Abitibi, Little Current--where they run Dancing and sparkling I see them in the sun. I hear the brawling rapid, the thunder of the fall, And when

4. Ender’s Game and the Future Reading List

We just finished discussing Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. It was very much enjoyed by all. You can read discussion questions here.

The reading list has been going round robin this year, with members selecting a book and the next person to choose. The book selected for:

  • March is John Connolly’s Book of Lost Things,
  • April’s book is Terry Pratchett’s Wee Free Men (this is getting made into a movie with Sam Raimi attached to direct),
  • May’s book is Uglies by Scott Westerfeld and
  • September’s book is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The rest of the year will get filled in with time.

5. July 21, 2007

That’s the date. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be released here in the US. Bloomsbury is releasing four editions: children’s hardback, adult hardback, gift and audio. The price is $34.99, but Barnes & Noble and Amazon are discouting it for less. There will be a deluxe edition as well.
