With John Romita Jr. seemingly stepping away from the Superman title (Howard Porter is filling in per recent solicits) for another DC project, many had wondered what might be next for one of the publisher’s biggest acquisitions in recent years. During the NYCC “Heroes to the Core” panel, DC co-publisher Dan DiDio clarified Romita’s next […]

It was just a few months back that Tom Hardy had hinted that he was working on a DC Comics adaptation, with all kinds of guesses flying around as to what he could have been referring to. Planetary? The Invisibles? Hitman? Per THR, we now have an answer, as they report that Hardy is set […]

DC Comics will publish an eight-part Batman saga called The Dark Knight: The Master Race. Famed comics creator Frank Miller and writer Brian Azzarello will work on the story together.
Miller recently announced the news on Twitter; the post has earned over 3,000 “retweets” and “favorites.” In the past, Miller wrote the first two installments of this trilogy: The Dark Knight Returns (1986) and The Dark Knight Strikes Again (2001-2002).
According to the press release, the new series will be released in time to honor “the 30th anniversary of The Dark Knight Returns original series.” At this point in time, “artists for the project have yet to be announced.”

— Frank Miller (@FrankMillerInk) April 24, 2015
Always three there are…for many months rumors have been swirling about Frank Miller penning, at least, a third volume in his Dark Knight series, and it’s now been confirmed via the above tweet. It’s the 30th anniversary of the original Dark Knight in 1986 so how better the celebrate than with a NEW DARK KNIGHT!
While Miller’s health has been in question in recent years, we’re told he remains sharp as a tack and eager to take on this project. Given the controversy over his recent Holy Terror, the title—referencing The Master Race—could presage even more controversy.
Brian Azzarello will be the co-writer on the projects, which will come out twice monthly, run for eight issues and start in late fall 2015. The art team has yet to be announced.
“Batman remains my favorite comic book hero and a sequel to Dark Knight is going to be daunting,” said Miller, “but we’ll do our best.”
“We are thrilled to have Frank back home at DC writing Batman,” according to Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, Co-Publishers for DC Entertainment. “The story he and Brian have crafted is an astounding and triumphant conclusion to this seminal body of work which influenced and shaped generations of readers and creators alike.”
According to Azzarello, “It’s been an amazing experience collaborating with Frank these past six months. I think we have an epic story that these characters truly deserve.”
UDPATE: This was announced on a panel at C2E2 by Azzarello, according to CBR: “For the past six months, I’ve been working with Frank Miller to bring the next chapter in the ‘Dark Knight’ to light,” he said. It’s been humbling. I’ve learned a lot, and I call him sensei. It’s a really, really big project.”
Miller confirmed the news himself via Twitter (his first tweet in three and a half years), releasing promotional art from the story and stating, “I hope that by now my silence is deafening.” In the official press release, DC Comics billed the story as “the epic conclusion of the celebrated ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ saga.”

Back in 2005, I interviewed Brian Azzarello for Issue 9 of Crimespree Magazine, and he followed up with an invite to write an introduction to a compilation of his blockbuster crime fiction series, 100 Bullets. 100 Bullets was one of those rare phenomenons: extremely popular and universally praised by critics. Everyone from the New York Times Book Review to The Onion, as well as fellow comic book artists and writers, heaped praised on the series. For example: "100 Bullets is to crime comics as The Wire is to cop shows" - Chicago Sun-Times. "For our money, the best current ongoing series" - Playboy. "For a noir junkie like myself, who is always looking for the new spin on the old school, I feel like I've died and gone to Chandler-Heaven. It honestly does not get much better than this" - Greg Rucka. The series won the 2002 Harvey Awards for Best Writer, Best Artist and Best Continuing Series, and the 2003 Harvey Award for Best Artist, as well as the 2001 Eisner Award for Best Serialized Story, and the 2002 and 2004 Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series. In sum, it was a hit, a milestone, a classic.
So getting asked to do an intro to one of the compilations was a big deal for me. What I came up with appeared in compilation #9, Strychnine Lives (Vertigo), which collected issues 59-67 and was published in 2006. Eventually, there were 100 individual issues and 13 compilations. The series ran from 1999-2009; ten years of top-quality writing and excellent graphic artistry that set a new standard and influenced and changed the world of graphic novels and comic books.
Here's my introduction.

Little is known of the new Vertigo book by the Eisner-winning 100 Bullets team of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso but as this editorial conference suggests
Via Twitter, it’s been confirmed that fellow award-winners cover artist Dave Johnson and colorist Patricia Mulvihill will be coming along for the Spaceman ride.
DC should just call itself “Bloodlines Comics” to better reflect where its priorities are (spoiler: stuck in 1993).
Survivors’ Club and Last Gang in Town ended last week.
Slash & Burn, by virtue of Vertigo’s lowest-selling title for April 2016, ended that month.
Seriously — are trade sales of Doctor Fate what keeps that book going? Paul — come back to the Legion!
I’m curious why Midnighter and Martian Manhunter, both great books that are being cancelled, are being kicked to the curb while Doctor Fate, selling worse than both of those, is apparently continuing post Rebirth? Makes no sense. Maybe you’re right, Steve, and it’s trades sell well?
RE: Green Lantern: Edge of Oblivion – I am still for about the 3rd month wondering why the numbers for GL: Lost Army are not included in the past counts.
As for Bloodlines, I remain convinced that DC has to do things with titles every once in a while for some reason in the family of trademarks/copyrights. There are too many times when older names get thrown out for no reason. Like “Star-Spangled Comics featuring G.I.Zombie” – why not just “G.I.Zombie”?
