1. A Hunger Games Tour

Scholastic News Kids Press CorpsA Hunger Games Tour by Jordan Mundy

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be on the set where your favorite book-turned-movie was filmed? I recently got the chance to visit the forest whereThe Hunger Games movie (rated PG-13) was filmed. I got to see the very place where Jennifer Lawrence acted as Katniss Everdeen and ran from the fireballs in the Arena. I acted out the scene where Josh Hutcherson portrayed Peeta Mellark, who was using camouflage to hide from the other tributes. It wasn’t on a set in Hollywood or New York City, but instead, in DuPont State Recreational Forest in North Carolina.

Jordan recreates the scene where Katniss finds Peeta’s blood in the Arena (DuPont State Recreational Forest, North Carolina).

The scenic area in Transylvania County is about 40 miles from my home in Asheville. I got to see where pivotal scenes from the movie were filmed on a special tour led by Hunger Games Unofficial Fan Tours.

Leigh Trapp owns the tour company. In an interview, she explained why she started the tours: “It’s kind of like when you go to Disney, and it’s almost like you’re in a magical world. I want people to have that same feeling. I want you to be able to walk into places where the people you love, the characters you love, actually do those things.”

A BOOK LOVER’S PARADISE

The tour is a book lover’s paradise. After a long hike, visiting some “sets” along the way, we stopped at Bridal Veil Falls for lunch. Inside of our packs, we had a box full of “Survival Snacks.” These were foods that Katniss would have lived off of during the Games. Foods included beef jerky, bread, and even goat cheese made locally. The nightshade berries are “eat at your own risk.”

Emily Harper, 12, from Clemmons, North Carolina, was on the tour. She acted out some of the scenes with her cousin, Ava Campbell, 13, also from Clemmons.

“We got to recreate a lot of the scenes,” Emily said. “It was like, whoa! The actors were actually here, where we are right now.”

Some of the other activities included archery and camouflage. Tourists could practice archery and work some “movie magic,” disguising themselves as Peeta.

Hunger Games Unofficial Fan Tours offers the DuPont tours from March through October. I strongly recommend these tours if you’re a fan of the books or movies. As Trapp said, “I think people who love the books and then love the movies are some of the most interesting people there are. They’re always super fun. They’re bright, they’re smart, they read, and so it makes for great days.”

2. The BFG Movie Cast

The BFG by Roald Dahl book coverRuby Barnhill Will Be Sophie in The BFG Movie

Roald Dahl was born on September 13 (now known as Roald Dahl Day), and The BFG was actually his favorite story that he wrote. Last year, we announced that Steven Spielberg will be directing the movie version coming out in 2016. Now we can announce that Ruby Barnhill has been cast as the young girl, Sophie.

The BFG will be 10-year-old Ruby Barnhill’s first feature film role. She has been acting for two years and lives in Cheshire, England with her parents, younger sister, and Tom the cat, and is a member of her local youth theatre.

Ruby Barnhill

Ruby Barnhill

“I feel incredibly lucky and I’m so happy,” she said. “Sophie gets to go on this wonderful adventure and I’m so excited that I get to play her.”

Steven Spielberg said, “After a lengthy search, I feel Roald Dahl himself would have found Ruby every bit as marvelous as we do. We have discovered a wonderful Sophie in Ruby Barnhill.”

Roald Dahl’s grandson said, “The character of Sophie is one of the most endearing young heroes in Roald Dahl’s stories. She is as brave as she is curious and has an innate sense of wonder. Many congratulations to Ruby on landing the role. We hope that making The BFG proves an utterly magical adventure for her.”

Well, how could it NOT be a magical experience? I am totally jealous of her! What do you think? Does she look like Sophie to you? Leave your thoughts in the Comments.

3. Goosebumps Movie Preview

Goosebumps logoGoosebumps Movie Comes to Theaters October 16!

I love the Goosebumps series so much because it’s just the right amount of scary and surprising! So it was a dream-come-true when I was invited to an early screening of the Goosebumps movie (rated PG).

Let me tell you, the movie does not disappoint! It is so cool to see all the monsters from R. L. Stine’s stories come together in one action-packed movie. Jack Black does a wonderful job playing R. L. Stine, and the whole cast really brings the Goosebumps series to life on the big screen! The movie features all my favorite Goosebumps monsters and shows Stine’s huge imagination and creativity to the fullest. I was hanging on the edge of my seat and wishing it would never end!

At one point in the movie, the R. L. Stine character says, “A good story has three parts: the beginning, the middle, and the twist!” I think that quote sums up the movie for me because it includes all of my favorite classic Goosebumps moments while also ending with a shocking twist! Sorry, no spoilers! You have to wait until October 16 when the movie comes to theaters.

If you were writing your own Goosebumps story, which monsters would you include? Would you keep all the classic characters or make up your own? And what fun twist would you throw in to take readers on your exciting and spooky journey?

Let us know the details of your Goosebumps story in the Comments below, and remember not to be too graphic or scary for kids younger than you!

5. Fantastic Beasts Will Star Eddie Redmayne

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find ThemFantastic Beast Cast Announcement!

Last year, we gave you news of J.K. Rowling’s next wizarding world movie Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. The movie is coming to theaters in November, 2016, and we finally have our Newt Scamander: Eddie Redmayne!

“I’m hugely excited,” Redmayne told the London Evening Standard. “J.K. Rowling’s a genius, I am so thrilled to be a part of it but I can’t say a single word beyond that . . . I’ve always loved that world and I feel thrilled to be invited into it.”

33-year-old Edward John David Redmayne was born and raised in London, England. Eddie is one of five children. He took drama lessons from a young age. His first stage appearance was as a workhouse boy in Oliver! in London’s West End.

EddieRedmayneLesMis

Les Miserables photo courtesy Universal Pictures

In 2012, he co-starred in the musical Les Misérables (rated PG-13), as Marius Pontmercy.

In 2014, he played scientist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything (rated PG-13), and won multiple awards, including the Academy Award for Best Actor.

J. K. Rowling said herself on Twitter that she is “Thrilled that Eddie Redmayne will be starring in Fantastic Beasts. He’ll be a perfect Newt Scamander!”

With his red hair and freckles, he totally could have been a Weasley in the Harry Potter movies, but that never happened. So I’m excited to see him in Fantastic Beasts. Plus, I’m just really, REALLY excited to see this movie!

What do you think? Does he look like Newt Scamander to you? Are you excited? Leave a Comment!

6. BFG Movie News for Roald Dahl Day

The BFG by Roald Dahl book coverThe BFGSteven Spielberg,

the super-famous guy who directed The Adventures of Tintin and E.T. (rated PG). The BFG movie is scheduled to be in theaters in 2016. If it’s anything like the book, it will be funny, fantastical, and phenomenal!

The BFG goes like this: In Sophie’s world, most of the giants who come around only want to find children to eat for breakfast. But the Big, Friendly Giant is different. He would never eat “uckyslush human beans.” He only eats “snozzcumbers.” When he carries Sophie off one night, she becomes his friend, not his next meal. Sophie is a tough cookie, so she decides to stop the other kid-munching giants, and the BFG is going to help her.

Let’s hear your casting ideas. Which young actress do you think should play Sophie? What about the BFG? Which actors do you think would fit the roles of the other giants in the story? Post your predictions in the Comments below. I can’t wait to see if the on-screen BFG looks anything like the giants I imagined from the book.

Q: Did you discuss the movie with the cast?

R. L. Stine: I read the script and gave the writers and producers some notes, but I never get very involved with the films and TV shows based on my books. I know that my job is to write books. I leave the movies and TV shows to the professionals. And it’s worked out pretty well.

Q: Do you have a favorite book that you wrote?

R. L. Stine: I am best known for books that are scary and funny. But what I really love most is the funny stuff. That’s why I love Mostly Ghostly: it has as many laughs as gasps. My favorite Goosebumps books are the ones with funny characters like Slappy the Dummy and Murder the Clown.

9. Goosebumps: The Movie

Jack Black Will Star in the New Goosebumps Movie!

Way back when I was younger, there was a TV show based on the Goosebumps series. I remember the first episode I ever saw—“Stay Out of the Basement”—and I remember being totally scared! But I loved it, too. I’ve since seen nearly every episode, and they’re all great.

I was really sad when the show ended. So that’s why I was very, very excited when I found out that my favorite spooky series

is being turned into a movie!

And you’ll never guess who the star is . . .

JACK BLACK!

Jack Black

Andrew Evans/PR Photos

That’s right, Jack Black! Jack will play author R. L. Stine

, whose scary characters are actually real. He protects his readers by keeping the monsters locked up in books. But when his daughter, Hannah, befriends the son of the family that moves in next door, trouble is afoot! The new neighbor, Zach, accidentally releases the monsters from Stine’s books, so it’s up to the three of them to catch the escaped monsters before it’s too late.

I’m sad because the movie won’t be coming out until March of 2016 (!!!) and that’s a very long time to wait. But I am so, so, SO excited that it’s being made! And two years is more than enough time to re-read all 177 Goosebumps books

. Yes, there are 177 Goosebumps books! Care to keep me company?

What do you think of the new Goosebumps movie? Do you think Jack Black will make an awesome R. L. Stine? (Check out a video interview with the real R.L. Stine

.) We want to know. Tell us in the Comments below!

10. J. K. Rowling Fantastic Beasts Movie News

Extra!

November 18, 2016.

Clear your calendar of any other events on that day because if you are a Harry Potter fan, you will want that day free to go see the new movie based on J. K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

.

It will be the first of 3 mega-movies set in the magical world about 70 years before the start of the Harry Potter story (so obviously, Harry, Ron, and Hermione were not born yet). The films will follow magizoologist Newton Artemis Fido Scamander (whose grandson Rolf will later marry Luna Lovegood). Newt was a Hufflepuff who graduated from Hogwarts in 1915. From 1918 to 1927, he traveled all over the world researching magical creatures for the book he was writing called . . . Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which we know went on to become a Hogwarts textbook. In his travels, he visited New York, which is where this movie will start.

We don’t know which actors will be in the movies, but we do know that the look of the movies will resemble the eight Harry Potter movies and might re-use the some of the same sets, currently housed at Warner’s Leavesden Studios in London.

OK. I have told you all I know so far. I’m sorry it’s not very much yet. Has anyone read the original book? What creatures are you most excited about seeing in the movie?

11. Dork Diaries Dream Cast

Dork Diaries book cover

Who should be in the Dork Diaries movie cast?

You may have heard already, but the bestselling Dork Diaries book series will be made into a movie in 2015! Cool, huh?

If you haven’t read any Dork Diaries books

yet, they’re pretty hilarious. They are written from the diary perspective of Nikki, a 14-year-old middle-schooler, who just transferred to a snooty private school. What everyone doesn’t know is that she is there on scholarship as a part of her dad’s bug exterminator business contract.

Nikki doesn’t fit in with the wealthy, designer-clad students, and spends most of her time alone writing in her diary. Then she befriends two other “dorky” girls, Chloe and Zoey, and discovers the beautiful Brandon Roberts (her crush). But the most popular girl in the school MacKenzie Hollister also has a crush on Brandon, and is determined to make Nikki’s life more miserable than it already is.

So . . . before the casting is decided, we want to know who’s in YOUR dream cast? Maybe some big Hollywood exec will even read this post and cast your pick!

Let us know your cast picks for . . .

G Hannelius photo

Disney Channel

Nikki: With her brown pigtails, and artsy, clumsy, and lovably dorky ways, I would choose G Hannelius.

Chloe: She is slightly prissy and a self-proclaimed expert on boys. I can’t decide between Peyton List

and Olivia Holt.

Zoey has dark hair, loves self-help books, and acts like a teen Dr. Phil with hoop earrings. Zendaya

or China Anne McClain maybe?
Ross Lynch

Janet Mayer / PRPhotos.com

Brandon has wavy hair and blue eyes. He’s an animal lover and super-cute dreamboat. Ross Lynch

— no contest!

MacKenzie has blond hair, blue eyes, and is as evil as a rattlesnake in lip gloss and ankle boots! I would pick Dove Cameron

— not because I think she’s mean, but because she can play all different kinds of girls. She plays 2 completely different people in one show!

List your dream cast in the Comments below. We can’t wait to see who you say!

    16. Zach Gordon Interview

    ZachgordonZach Gordon Interview

You know him as Greg Heffley in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies. I met him when he came to Scholastic for a Live Chat a couple of years ago before the 1st Wimpy Kid movie came out. He was hilarious and adorable in real life, much more than Greg would be. We now have a new interview with him after his 3rd Wimpy Kid movie. Read on for Zach's current reflections on his life as an actor, his favorite books, and his hopes for the future.

Q: What have you learned about yourself from being an actor?
Zach: Being an actor has made me realize that I can overcome anything, whether it’s acting, school or any other challenge. When I put my mind to anything, I can accomplish so much. When I act, I become another character and I bring ideas and qualities to the character that I imagine and create. You have to let your imagination go when you act and become the character, and that’s the fun of it.

Q: What advice do you have for kids interested in being professional actors?
Zach: Have fun and don’t take it too seriously. There is a lot of rejection in the acting business and you can’t get too emotional or worked up after every audition. Just move on to the next one and eventually all your hard work will pay off. Acting isn’t for everyone, and it’s a lot of hard work. You give up a great deal as a child actor; but for me, the rewards are worth the sacrifice.

Q: What is an unusual talent that most people don’t know that you have?
Zach: I love to write, and I’m planning to write screenplays in the future.

Q: What is your favorite song right now?
Zach: "Stereo Hearts" by Adam Levine and Gym Class Heroes.

Q: What was your most embarrassing moment? Diary-of-a-wimpy-kid-WK-402_rgb
Zach: My family and I were seeing Diary of a Wimpy Kid at a local theatre. When the movie ended, my dad began cheering like crazy and announced to everyone in the theater that I was Greg. One guy even looked back at the screen, and then looked at me and said, “Nah, really????”

Q: How do your friends react to your stardom?
Zach: What’s great about most of my friends is that they treat me as if I am just a regular kid. I’ve had most of the same friends since preschool and they don’t pay much attention to my acting. We just hang out like everyone else.

Q: Do you have any pets?
Zach: My chocolate lab Bosco is the coolest dog you’ll ever meet. He’s crazy, hyper, and awesome. Everything he does is funny. When I let him outside to do his business, he grabs on to my leg with his paws because he’s afraid to go out alone. He’s a keeper though.

Q: What is the best book you ever read?
    Zach: (clearing throat) <

    17. Josh Hutcherson Talks About Peeta

Hungergames_130Some people disagree with me, but I think the most important character in The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins (for ages 12 and up) is Peeta. Therefore, I also think that the actor who plays Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) has the most important role in The Hunger Games movie (rated PG-13), in theaters March 23. In my eyes, for the movie to really work, Peeta has to be just right. That's why I am so excited to read this interview with Josh talking about Peeta because it sounds like he really gets him. It makes me even more excited to see the movie!

Q: How did you prepare for the role of Peeta, a baker who becomes a fighter? Did you have to train in baking and fighting before the movie?
Josh: [Laughs] Actually, one of the things that drew me to The Hunger Games so much is how much I felt like myself and Peeta had in common. I think we’re very much the same person. We have a very similar outlook on life . . . about being genuine with people. I think that’s something that Peeta always is. He’s very good at working with people. He’s very outgoing, and he really believes in not letting anything change you. You always need to make sure that you are true to yourself and you’re being the truest version of you. For me, that’s kind of how I’ve been throughout the movie business. People can really change you and you can sort of lose who you are. But I’ve always believed in maintaining myself as a person.
As far as preparing for the role, I felt like I was really already there mentally. You know, the books give a lot of insight into the characters, which is really great. So, having that as a reference was awesome. And Suzanne Collins was great. I had a great conversation with her. She asked me if I had any question about motivations, to just give her a call and she would happily talk it out with me.
As far as the baking and fighting goes, I actually love to bake, funnily enough. That’s another thing Peeta and I have in common. I’ve always been into cooking and baking. And with the fighting element, Peeta doesn’t fight a whole lot in the first Hunger Games. So, I didn’t have too much training for that. I did, however, put on 15 pounds of muscle weight for the role to get that beefier, been-lifting-bags-of-flour sort of look. Basically, I was eating a ton of protein and working out every day, lifting a lot of weights and stuff like that. Peeta is “farm boy” kind of strong, so he’s not like the cut surfer model type. He’s a little bulkier and a little bit bigger, so that’s what we were going for with the look.

Q: Do you think Peeta would be a friend of yours in real life?
Josh: I definitely think so. We’d definitely get along because we’d pretty much have the exact same view about life, and our demeanor would be very similar.

What do you think? Isn't he perfect? Leave a Comment!

    18. Taylor Kitsch Interview

Taylor_kitschTaylor Kitsch is a Canadian actor and former Abercrombie & Fitch model. You may recognize him from the X-Men: Wolverine movie (rated PG-13), the TV show Friday Night Lights, and most recently, the sci-fi, Martian Civil War movie, John Carter (rated PG-13). We interviewed Taylor to find out more about John Carter, Taylor's first date, his Swahili tattoo, and his charity work in Africa.

Q: Were you scared to do any of the stunts? How did you prepare for them?
Taylor: Sure. There are times when you're 150 feet up in the air hanging on these wires, and you're going to free fall for a couple seconds at least, you know? It sometimes crosses your mind, the "what if" moment. There's a scene where I'm in the great white ape arena, and that was an 80-foot jump that was quite intense. I mean, you're landing on a four-inch mat, which isn't exactly the most ideal landing to have. So there are definitely times where right before they call, "Action!" that you're just going, "I don't know how this is going to end."
I trained on wires for months, and then just the regular workouts to get right for where I wanted John Carter to be. I gained a bunch of weight and then it was a diet regimen for a total of 11 months.

Q: What was the first thing you ate after the whole thing was over?
Taylor: I love pizza, so that was the first thing. I think I had two or three of them – whole ones. [Laughter]

Q: John Carter is a human who ends up on Mars. Can you relate to feeling out of place?
Taylor: Oh man, I think there are little moments, you know. I don't love press, and to be out in the middle of it is . . . sometimes you just feel out of place. It just doesn't feel right. I love my private life, so when you have to go and do these things for the job or whatnot, you feel out of place. Interviews, I can do all day long. I don't mind that, but just being out like, you know, your picture, people following ya or something like that. It's not a comfort zone for me.

Q: What was your first date like?
Taylor: I had like my first date when I was in grade six I think, and I still regret not kissing her at the end of the night. That was a big thing for me. I freaked out. I was too scared. [Laughter]

Q: What kinds of books do you like?
Taylor: You gain inspiration daily when you're reading. I love the escape, but I also love to read about people that have accomplished amazing things. Everyone's struggled or taken a risk at some point to get where they are, you know, that are worth reading about. So I love reading true stories and adventures that have truly happened. From Martin Luther King to Steve Jobs, I love to just get into their heads and see what did and didn't work, and how they became who they became. It’s inspiring.

Q: If you could go in a time machine back to when you were 12 years old, what advice would you give yourself?
Taylor: Um, man, that’s a good question. I was lucky enough to be raised in a small town where, you know, the forest was my playground. It wasn’t video games like it is today, and I would just be like, “Get outside and truly explore that imagination.” I truly attribute so much of that to where I am today. I’m just exploring and meeting new people and new adventures. I would say, "Experience as much as you can, and be as

    21. Chloe Moretz and the Hugo Movie

Hugo movieHave you read the amazing book by Brian Selznick, The Invention of Hugo Cabret? If not, you totally should especially since the movie version (Hugo, rated PG) is out now. It is the story of a wily and resourceful boy named Hugo whose quest to unlock a secret automaton leads him on a wild adventure. For more about the movie, also check out the Hugo Movie Companion book also by Brian Selznick.

Chloe Moretz plays Isabel, Hugo's partner in crime in his adventure. You may recognize her from The Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie. Here she is to answer some of our questions. . . .

Hugo2Q: Can you describe your character?
Chloe: I play a young girl named Isabel who’s this French, Parisian, Audrey Hepburn-type, fun-loving, sweet girl who loves adventure and reading books, and she loves being smart and intelligent, and she loves big words.

Q: Are you like that too? Do you like big words and things?
Chloe: Yea. I love reading. My favorite book is Wuthering Heights. I like being intelligent. I like being smart and well-spoken.

Hugo3Q: Did you read The Invention of Hugo Cabret before doing the movie?
Chloe: I read it actually during filming and it’s very much like the book the way we did it. Marty (director, Martin Scorsese) definitely went heavier into the history of silent film and that whole thing to make it more like an homage to filmmaking. But yea, it’s very beautiful.

Q: Did you have to learn a special French accent to play Isabel?
Chloe: Everyone was Parisian, but they actually chose a British accent for everyone to do because that’s like the universal continental European kind of language type thing. I had never done the British accent before then, and actually my brother, Trevor, is my acting coach. So he did the accent with me.

Q: Is it hard to memorize your lines?
Chloe: If it’s a really, really big chunk, I guess it’s not very easy, but you just have to break it up into pieces. So you learn one chunk at a time. Break it into three pieces. You learn the first chunk, the second chunk, and the third chunk, and by the time you’re done with the third chunk, you know the whole thing. I’m pretty good at memorizing lines and stuff. I’m not bad with that.

Q: Do you know how many movies you’ve been in?
Chloe: Um, probably like twenty-something. Yea, like 25 or something like that.

Q: Do you go to a regular school or do you do special schooling on set?
Chloe: I am homeschooled, but I go through an actual school. So I’m part of like an actual classroom. I have the same textbooks as my friends an

    23. SPONSORED POST: Dolphin Tale

    Dolphin_130x130_sponsored

This blog post is sponsored by Dolphin Tale.

The Dolphin Tale movie (rated PG) about the dolphin named Winter with a prosthetic tail, comes out in theaters on September 23. To prepare you for the movie, Abby Stone, Winter's actual trainer from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA), has answered some of YOUR questions. Read on to find out more about Winter, the amazing dolphin with a fake tail, and what the life of a dolphin trainer is like.

Q: How did Winter feel about the tail and what was her reaction?

Abby: The prosthetic tail has been a positive experience for Winter and she continues to respond with energy and enthusiasm based on trust and the strength of our relationship. Winter certainly was, and continues to be, an active participant in the training process, helping us determine how and when to advance to the next step. And of course, our approach to training is always fun, motivating Winter to try new things. We were definitely encouraged by Winter’s reaction of curiosity to the various stages as well as her eagerness to test her new tail without the aid of her trainers.DolphinsTale_600w

Q: Is Winter the only animal with a prosthetic, or is it more common now for injured animals to be cured like this?
Abby: Winter is the only dolphin in the world to have a prosthetic that involves the entire tail as well as the joint that connects to the peduncle [the narrow part of the tail that attaches to the fin]. There are a variety of animals that have prosthetic devices to assist with the quality of life -- including horses, elephants, turtles, kangaroos, and birds!

    Q: Can Winter have babies?
Abby: Physically, Winter has the proper internal anatomy to have a calf although at this point, she is still too young. Because Winter does not have a tail, it would have to be discussed with our veterinarian.

Q: Does Winter have any enemies at the aquarium?
Abby: Winter is provided with a very safe and loving home at CMA free of any natural predators.

Q: How do you train dolphins to do tricks?
Abby: We teach our animals to do behaviors that come naturally to them in a very slow process using positive reinforcement. We ask the animals to do bits and pieces of a behavior until the animal has the understanding to put all of the pieces together! This process can take a few training sessions, months, or years to train to its entirety!

Q: When will Winter be introduced to Hope? [Hope is the latest rescued dolphin living at CMA. She was found orphaned last December when she was only 3 months old!]
Abby: Our plan is to introduce the two later this year. We are looking at introductions around October or November.

    25. Harry Potter Then and Now

HarryPotterMovie As you know, the final Harry Potter movie comes out on Friday, July 15. “It all ends on 7/15!” Of course, I am going to see it, but Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 (rated PG-13) will be a bittersweet experience. As the day gets closer, I am thinking more and more over the last ten years of watching these movies, watching my favorite characters grow up and change.

I put together this slideshow of pictures from the movies. Remember Daniel Radcliffe when he was that tiny?! The final pictures in the slideshow are the newest pics from Part 2. Isn't it so strange to see Hogwarts all demolished like that? And just for fun, I added the pic of Voldemort hanging out on the set, with a normal nose and. . . even kind of smiling.

And, in case you weren't invited to the World Premiere in London last week, here is a highlights video of the stars on the Red Carpet. Enjoy!
