"I'd make a kick-ass beauty queen."
November was a good reading month for graphic novels. I read Cardboard by Doug TenNapel, and a review is forthcoming, but let me tell you now, it is fantastic!
I also read Tune: Vanishing Point by Derek Kirk Kim. Another review forthcoming, and again, it's fantastic. (But a head's up, it is for older teens and adults.)
In audiobook news, I listened to
Just back from Kauai, readergirlz! I was a bit reluctant to take my Kindle to the beach. How about you?

Now that I'm back home, the top of my to-read stack is Libba Bray's
Beauty Queens and a celebration release of M.T. Anderson's
Feed. Can't wait to get to both! What's on your stack this last month of summer?
Boy do I have a post foryou! See, my writing compadres, Julie Musil and Leslie Rose, and I have allfinished reading BEAUTY QUEENS by Libba Bray. This book is too amazing to becontained in a single post, so the three of us have come together this week tobring you an uber-awesome BEAUTY QUEENS Blog Extravaganza complete with our ownbeauty contestant profiles and a contest too fun to believe. So make yourselvescomfortable for part one, right here, right now.
And with me to review thebook I have none other than a beauty contestant, Miss Writer’s Block!
Me: So what did you think of the book?
MWB: It was pretty. *Smiles*
Me: *Cringes away from blinding reflection off teeth* How did the story makeyou feel?
MWB: Confused and awed. Imean, I can’t even finish my book, let alone come up with yummy stories thatwork together so well and actually mean something. That’s why I went for theTitle. *fingers ribbon*
Me: Thank you, Miss Writer’sBlock.
My opinion? Oh come on. Youguys know Libba Bray is my favorite author. I may or may not have blackmailedher into taking this picture with me at the SCBWI conference. Either way, thisbook did NOT disappoint. I’d say lots of good stuff about the genius of it, butlet’s leave it at: If you want to be my friend you should read this book.
Now to my fun facts pagebased off the novel:

Sounds awesome! I know I've read several books by her already... can't wait for this one.
Yup, I looked her up. I read the trilogy! Picked up the first book at the bookstore, and bought the other two as soon as they were out. Can't believe I didn't remember that! My mind must be going.
Whoa! Lisa, are you psychic? I JUST started reading this book last night. I only got through the first chapter before I passed out from exhaustion, but I can't wait to dive back in.
I'd LOVE an autographed copy, so here's a fun fact about me: I have moved 26 times in my life. Yep.
What a fun idea! Beauty Queens is at my library and is on my list to read, so no need to enter me in the contest. :)
Awesome review! And as I definitely want to continue to be your friend, is now a must read!! :-)
Fun fact about me -- I have a star named after me. Actually, it's named after my family, Sipal. I won the Spacecoast Author's of Romance Launching a Star contest a while back and this was the prize. But my kids thought it was so cool that I had the star named simply Sipal rather than my full name to include them as well! (As they are now teens, they've probably decided it's an embarrassment! :-)
He he. Since I live in Canada, I don't have to strain my brain for the answer. I want to read this book once my TBR pile is slightly smaller. :D
I've heard so much about this story!
Fun fact: I'm relentless in a car - I sing and wave at people. Yeah, it's a great way to irritate my kiddos. :) Payback...
Ooh, I've been wanting to read this! Fun fact--my hair is naturally curly.
Miss Writer's Block!!! I love that!!! It's so fun to read these fun facts, and I'm so excited about our contest. You diva, you!
LIBBA BRAY, WE'RE CALLING YOU!!!!!! (stalking, obsessing, whatever)
Oh I loved Going Bovine, and that's why I wanted to read Beauty Queens too. I'm glad to know you loved it!
I'm not going to participate because you know, I don't live in the U.S.
But I think it's a great idea! Good luck! :D
Oh, crap, I forgot the fun fact! I'm a Zumba instructor. When I'm not chained to my laptop writing, I'm bouncing all over everywhere, shaking my hips.
I'm also married to a college president... makes me a first lady. Not too many first ladies are also Zumba instructors, I'd wager.
What an awesome contest! Libba Bray's my favorite author; 'A Great and Terrible Beauty' is actually the book that got me to start reading. So I can't even imagine getting the chance to have a book that's been signed by her!
My fun fact: I can not listen to "Dancing Queen" by Abba without crying.
Thanks!
-Rachel
I really have to get this book! Sounds like a blast - and you've definitely got great taste in authors! :)
I have the book and look forward to reading it. Good luck to the entrants. :)
What fun!
I'm in Australia so I can't enter, but I do have a fun fact:
I can get the lids off jars.
With my bare hands.
(Sometimes I scare myself.)
Oh gosh. *fangirl squeal* I loved the Gemma Doyle trilogy! I can't wait to read Beauty Queens! Um, talk about myself? Okay! Sometimes, when I get mad? I swear in French so no one else knows what I'm saying. *shrug*
Fab picture of you and the AMAZING Libba Bray, LIsa. Can I photoshop myself in? Fun Fact - I have no clue how to use Photoshop. Oh, wait I can't enter, I'm one of the pretty blogs giving away the prize. Oops.
I can tickle myself. Now I really want to know how that works. :)
Fun Fact: I'm severely directionally handicapped and get lost several times a year. My husband gets worried everytime I travel outside our hometown and insists I take the GPS, so I can at least get back home.
I've been wondering about this book, now I'm really curious and really want to read it! And seriously, you can tickle yourself? That is awesome.
Fun Fact: I start conversations in the middle of sentences. Even Funner: some of my closest friends can still follow the conversation. ;)
I rarely read YA (so immersed in MG usually) but this one has such a great sense of humor, judging by the cover photo. So I could certainly be tempted...
You don't have to enter me into the contest because I already have a signed copy. :) I'm excited to read it! This post was hilarious.
Oh, I loved this novel! It is hilarious. And Libba Bray's keynote was so awesome at SCBWI LA. Someone will be a very lucky winner indeed.
Sounds like an awesome read! Great fun facts :)
Uh, my answers so far on Julie's and Leslie's really have NOT been appropriate for Miss Teen contest. So for your post, I'm actually digging back into my teen years. No wait, that fact is too embarrassing. Okay, here's a safer one. Fun fact about teenage Margo: she used to bring lizards to school with her and sometimes let them run loose in class. Amazingly, my teachers maintained a high level of tolerance toward this behavior.
