So what is musician-performer-dancer-composer Lindsey Stirling doing on this blog about children’s book illustration? She’s an artist but she works in a different medium. She hasn’t published a children’s picture book. (Not yet, anyway, but give her time.) I’m sharing this video of her 2011 tune Shadows, because twenty-two million YouTube viewers are not wrong […]

How perfect that award-winning children’s book artist Terry Widener has done the pictures for the new picture book by Jonah Winter (just released by Schwartz and Wade) about the greatest all around baseball player ever – Willie Mays. Terry brings a background of high level advertising and editorial illustration and something else to the many [...]

Hi all! Here is my super-geeky video blog where I announce the winners of the books!! (No, not joking, unfortunately. It IS super-geeky but very hopefully you will get a chuckle or two out of it. At least my dog is cute. I am new at this, so my delivery isn't exactly smooth if you know what i mean.) You'll need to watch it to see who wins (so-rry!! ;) ). I wanted to keep it a "secret" by not writing down the names here, because it is more fun that way. If anyone cannot view the vlog, please do let me know, and I'll email you the winners' names!!
Thanks everyone for participating and especially for your really kind and genuine wishes for the book and congratulations to me. I truly appreciate it. I am sothankful to have my PBJ group!! :)
XO, Kathy

This is from talented illustrator Kristi Valiant!
"Did I make it on time? I think one of the posts said until 7 tonight, so here's my month of July - the month I was married in 2006! Such a romantic month... ahhhh..."
"The scene in the background is from a beautiful area of China that my husband and I visited one summer. And I made the little guy presiding over the wedding a mouse because of a Chinese love song that my husband and I sing to each other that goes, "I love you, loving you, as the mouse loves the rice..." or in Chinese, "wo ai ni ai zhe ni jiu xiang lao shu ai da mi"
Good Luck, Kristi!

Maybe because it's the shortest month or perhaps I'm a romantic at heart, February is one of my favorite months. I also love Valentine's. It's the holiday that kind of sneaks up on you, but with the promise of chocolate, so it's never stressful! Congratulations Kathy!

and paired with Labradorite, these earrings squeal the end of winter with it's last snowy
burst. You don't have to stretch your imagination too far to realize that spring is soon on
its way. Yay for March!

selfish reason number one: It's my birthday month! I also like it
because I love Valentine's Day and have since I was a little girl. I
also love that we always get a hint of spring sometime during the month.
I love it because it had my grandfather's birthday and George Harrison's
birthday on the same day. And I love it now because I always go to the
SCBWI Winter Conference in the first half, and SCBWI Whispering Pines
Retreat in the second half of Feb. . Finally, I like it because it's
short!

One of my favorite months is March. Brisk and blustery, but with the promise of Spring in the air.

Congratulations on your book, Kathy!! The Months is such a lovely topic for school visits! May they be plentiful and fun.
I chose May as my favorite month because it's one of the very few times of the year, we Texans can open our windows without frying or freezing.

Maybe instead of ‘ball’, I’ll do the same with the word ‘nut’… Also like the illustrations in Grandfather Gandhi – bold, but subtle in layered ways. Nice.
Mark, this is a wonderful post!! Thank you for the inspiration. AND how generous of you to share the other illustration courses. I have to add a plug for YOUR course which you humbly mentioned last. Mark’s course, Make Your Splashes; Make Your Marks!, was career and confidence changing for me! I feel so much more equipped to enter into the world of picture book publishing. Mark teaches a little history, as well as the craft itself and watercolor instruction that empowered me like never before. Reasonably priced and paced to your pocket book and schedule DO NOT MISS THIS excellent class. Mark is always encouraging and gives personal input and feedback. You will grow as an illustrator!
