10. R.I.P. Jan Carew, 92, Guyanese author ("The Third Gift" with Leo & Diane Dillon, 1974)

Well, it seems my earlier sources were wrong - I had thought he was younger.

He wrote at least 13 books for children and teens.

His best-known adult novel was "Black Midas" (1958).

He retired to Louisville, Kentucky, where he died on Dec. 5th or the 6th - there seems to be some disagreement.

I read "Send No Blessings" (1990) some time ago - it's sweet and sensitive. Plus, how many YA novels do you know of about modern families living in trailers that aren't (completely) grim?

Only one of his poetry collections is listed as juvenile - "The Flight of the Roller Coaster," 1985.

About that book: "Raymond Souster takes us out for a day at the carnival and for a walk across a bridge, and provides us with moments that we will likely never forget."
