I am part of Manchester Craft and Design Centre's 'Forming Words Alphabet' Exhibition, one of 26 Artists chosen to create a piece of artwork based on a letter of the alphabet that we were randomly assigned. I was given the letter 'R' which I interpreted as this character, whose outfit and shape reflect both the upper and lower case of the letter.
I was thinking of Quentin Blake's words from a few years ago when I saw him speak at the South Ken Kid's Book Festival in 2011, where he spoke of drawing how the character 'feels', so this is what I was trying to convey with this piece, which is called 'Ready'.
"From illustration to book sculpture, and mosaic to ceramics, the ‘Forming Words Alphabet’ is a perfect celebration of all things literary!"
