James Patterson plans to blow up his next book, literally (meaning literally). The planet’s bestselling author since 2001, according to Vanity Fair, is offering his fans the chance to join him and watch his next release, Private Vegas, self-destruct at an undisclosed location 24 hours after the purchaser opens it.
For a cool $294,038, the winner receives \"the most thrilling reading experience of all time\"; a first-class flight to said undisclosed location, luxury hotel accommodations for two nights, a pair of 14-karat gold binoculars (the better to see with), dinner with the author, and the exploding copy of Private Vegas. \"While the details of how the book will explode are being kept secret, the process will involve a bomb squad and a location that could come straight out of a Patterson story,\" reports Lori Holcomb-Holland in the New York Times.
Another 1,000 fans will be able to read the book for free — for 24 hours. On the site selfdestructingbook.com, codes will be released in groups. Users can download free digital copies that will delete themselves a day after reading begins.
The ninth in Patterson’s \"Private\" series, Private Vegas is due out next Monday, January 26. Codes for the free \"exploding\" digital copies will begin to be released at noon on Wednesday.

Popular series, a new addition to the American Girl conglomerate, and a Disney Frozen book make this month's selection of best new kids books totally a kids' choice list!
Bestselling author James Patterson is giving a generous gift to independent bookstores this holiday season. He is donating $473,000 to 81 different stores across the country.
The donation is part of the author’s promise to give $1 million to indie bookstores this year. This brings the author’s donations for the year up to $1,008,300 which he handed out to 178 independent bookstores across the country.
“Here’s to a joyful holiday season for booksellers everywhere,” said Patterson in a statement. “Yes, joyful! Here’s to more parents and grandparents coming to their senses and giving their kids books—yes, books—for Christmas and other holidays. Here’s to local governments waking up to the fact that bookstores and libraries are essential to our way of life. Here’s to media coverage of books, booksellers, and publishers, and to a wiser, more literate America. Happy holidays to one and all!”

Bestselling author James Patterson may have sold more books than anyone else on the planet, but he’s also down to Earth: He’d hate himself too.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, which publishes next month. Patterson revealed: “I would be like, ‘Well, what’s this? He couldn’t possibly do what he does…I’d probably be kind of irritated by the guy.”
Here is an excerpt from the interview:
Michael Pietsch—Patterson’s former editor who is now C.E.O. of Hachette (the parent company of Patterson’s publisher, Little, Brown)—tells Purdum, “In his case, it’s a drive like I’ve never seen. He’s a very competitive person, but I think he’s competitive with himself. Do I wake up at night wondering if it’s going to stop? We had a meeting today in which I proposed that we might want to hold off a secondary format of a book for some point in the future when there might not be an abundance of them in future years, and he looked at me incredulously, as if ‘When is that going to happen?’”

World-renowed author James Patterson has launched the #SaveOurBooks campaign. The video embedded above features a controversial scene of book burning.
Patterson aims to elicit a pledge of support from President Barack Obama; he hopes to have Obama declare his concern about the state of reading within the country, appear in public carrying a book, and visit either a library or a bookstore. To help Patterson with this project, bibliophiles can sign a petition, write to a U.S. senator, and share information on social media.
For the last two years, the President has visited the Politics & Prose independent bookstore on Small Business Saturday. Last week, he and his two daughters purchased 17 books including Jacqueline Woodson’s National Book Award-winning memoir Brown Girl Dreaming.
In the past, Patterson has expressed his own concern about how well reading and books are valued by the American people. He has donated $2 million to independent bookstores throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. What do you think?

Hollywood has been chasing after popular books for inspiration. Titles such as the Harry Potter series, The Hunger Games trilogy, and The Fault in our Stars novel have been transformed into blockbluster film franchises.
At this point in time, a diverse array of adaptation projects are being developed for YouTube, Hulu, and the silver screen. In recognition of book creators, The Hollywood Reporter has crafted a list of “Hollywood’s 25 Most Powerful Authors.”
J.K. Rowling claimed the number one spot because arguably speaking, “no single creator has had so much influence on a megafranchise since George Lucas and the original Star Wars trilogy.” We’ve posted the list of the top 10 authors below—what do you think?

Collective Digital Studio will develop a five-part animated web series inspired by James Patterson’s forthcoming book, House of Robots. The story follows a fifth grader named Sammy and his robot named E (which stands for “Error”).
Here’s more from the press release: “It was never easy for Sammy Hayes-Rodriguez to fit in, so he is less than thrilled when his genius mom insists he brings her newest invention to school: a walking, talking robot he calls E—for ‘Error.’ The web series brings to life several scenes from the book as Sammy discovers the amazing secret E holds that could change him and his family forever…if all goes well on the trial run!”
The video embedded above features the House of Robots book trailer. The first episode will debut on the FЯED YouTube channel on November 28th. Each subsequent installment will be posted on Fridays.
Chris Grabenstein, Patterson’s collaborator for the I, Funny and Treasure Hunters series, served as the co-author for House of Robots. Juliana Neufeld, the artist behind the Treasure Hunters series, created the illustrations for this new project. Little Brown Books for Young Readers will publish the book on November 24th.

In the UK and Ireland, 73 indie booksellers are feeling the luck o’ the Irish and the great good will of mega-bestselling author James Patterson.
Taking a page from his 2013 announcement to give a cool $1 mil to independent bookstores around the U.S. to help keep print reading and indies alive, Patterson has extended his sharing of the green across the pond, pledging to donate £250,000 (approximately $406,000) to bookshops in the UK.
In his first round of grants, more than £130,000 (approximately $211,120) was given to 73 bookshops in the UK and Ireland. Eligible were any bookshops with a dedicated children’s book section, and 183 applied. Grants ranged from £250 ($406) to £5,000 ($8,120).
Speaking to The Bookseller, Patterson said:
“I have been completely overwhelmed by just how many people have applied for the grants and impressed and enthused by the caliber of the applications. It’s been a very difficult decision process and I have worked to identify independent bookshops for whom this money may make a difference. I’m excited to follow their progress and see the proposed ideas in action.” (more…)

Collective Digital Studio has acquired exclusive online rights to James Patterson’s Maximum Ride series. The studio intends to present this fantasy story as a YouTube mini-series.
This project would not mark the first time that Patterson’s popular young adult series has received the adaptation treatment. Yen Press has released seven volumes of Maximum Ride as a manga series with illustrations by artist NaRae Lee; three more installments are in the pipeline.
Here’s more from Variety: “The eight-book Maximum Ride series, which has sold more than 30 million copies, centers on six kids who have been genetically modified to be 98% human and 2% bird — giving them wings and the power of flight. Jame Patterson - whew! When does that guy sleep? I bet he has electrodes attached to his brain to transcribe his dreams so when he wakes up, he has new ideas.
In July, his latest book series begins,
The Homeroom Diaries. Margaret "Cuckoo" Clarke, back from a brief sojourn in a mental hospital, tries to get all the warring factions of her high school to bury the hatchet. Really, that's all you need to know. The possibilities for mayhem that exist in that premise are infinite, indeed. Patterson's great-grandchildren will inherit this franchise when all high schools will be virtual - but the problems will be the same. Sigh. Unless "Cuckoo" is successful and real teens use her stories as a model of peaceful behavior. Hope springs!
Kids Book Website Tuesday!!!1. Cops 'n' Kids Last Wednesday, I visited the Cops'n'Kids Reading Room on the Southside Northampton Community College campus. What an inviting - and exciting - place! While I was there talking to Bev Bradley, who manages this organization, two children came in with parents and walked out with FREE their-very-own-to-keep books. Studies have shown that children who grow up with books in their homes, books that STAY in their homes, have an advantage in education. As a librarian, I worry about the unintended slight to libraries a little bit. I know and understand the deep attachment that children have for their very own books and I applaud Cops-n-Kids for making book ownership a possibility for everyone. If you live in the Lehigh Valley, visit the Reading Room on Wednesdays or Saturdays. If you live elsewhere, look at what they do to copy, or find a similar group near you.

Review: I'll admit it, sometimes I just feel like reading a quick, entertaining, James Patterson novel. With a really crazy schedule that barely left time for sleep, let alone reading and reviewing novels, I knew I could count on Patterson to provide a non-taxing read that I could pick up in short bursts and not be completely lost with. Unfortunately, its the entertainment factor that seems to be more hit or miss when it comes to Patterson's recent efforts. As he has grown into a novel-producing brand, releasing numerous books with various co-authors, the quality of his stories seems to have suffered. With all this in mind, curiosity got the better of me, and I found myself plowing through one of Patterson's latest series novels, Private.
As any reader of any of Patterson's novels can attest, pace is rarely an issue. I easily found myself 80 pages deep into the book with no problems, but was surprised at the amount of time the authors (Maxine Paetro co-authors this narrative) spent setting up the characters and upcoming action. The novel follows former Marine pilot Jack Morgan who, after inheriting 15 million dollars from his imprisoned father, starts his own private investigation firm. Within 5 years, Jack's company, Private, quickly becomes a success with branches around the globe. Jack oversees the LA branch, and has recently become very busy with three urgent cases.
To start things off, his best friend, Andy, has called him to investigate the murder of his wife, Shelby. As is always the case, Andy is the police's prime suspect, but Jack knows Andy would never kill the wife he loved. Jack tasks Private with finding the real killer before Andy is hauled off by the LAPD. In addition, Jack's uncle Fred, a high level executive of the NFL, has hired Private to investigate the possibility of referees fixing games through bad calls. With several examples, the evidence seems to support this theory. Jack’s firm has to prove this case before it reaches the public and completely destroys the integrity of the game. Finally, there is the case of the schoolgirl killer. Thirteen girls have been killed and even stranger, none of the killings were done the same way. With the rate of the killings quickly rising, Private is in a race to catch the killer before more innocent lives are lost.
This is probably one of my favorite Patterson novels in recent memory. Considering some of his other attempts, the characters were generally well thought out, and the mysteries were intriguing without ever getting completely over the top. With all the cases coming to a satisfying, if somewhat predictable, conclusion, this novel was brisk while still providing enough entertainment to make it an enjoyable read.
The online writing community Figment has partnered with Little, Brown Books for Young Readers to host The Kiss writing contest.
Participants have the opportunity to win $500 in prize money and a 16GB iPad mini that contains eBooks by James Patterson. The winning story will be posted onto Patterson’s young-adult website; the victorious writer will also receive a personal message from Patterson on Facebook.
To enter, writers must write a short short story (500 words or less) “about a relationship that no one approves of” and submit it before the February 26th deadline.

A number of publishing professionals at Hachette’s Little, Brown & Company imprint were promoted this week.
