26. Wacky Wordage No. 5 - Self Portrait of Mattias Adolfsson

Solf Portrait of Mattias Adolfsson

Self Portrait of Mattias Adolfsson

REFLECTION UPON THE SELF PORTRAIT OF MATTIAS ADOLFSSON, by J.R.Poulter

Nice shade of Blue!

Do you do other Hues too?

A puce or vermillion

Could look like a Million.

Heliotrope’s a nice shade

But a bit prone to fade….

+++—+++—

Just tan is so boring,

Common White isn’t scoring

Can you really bare to be inked

In pink!

And then there’s yellow

Well that ‘s a tad mellow…

Black’s back,

At least on the fashion track.

+++—+++—

I do think blue

Looks good on you!

Would you colour me too?

+++—+++—

[This is brave stuff - he has also done a selfportrait as a merman, or is it being half eaten by a sharkodile? I might have to do a wacky wordage on that one too...]

27. Wacky Wordage No. 4 - The Armourplated Elephort - illustration by Mattias Adolfsson

The Armour-Plated Elephort

The Armour-Plated Elephort

The Armour-Plated Elephort by J.R.Poulter 08

The armour-plated elephort

Lumbers through my mind

On his way to Fanciful

To join more of his kind.

xxxx—-xxxx—-

He rumbles on, he never sleeps

He tumbles down the mountain steeps.

He snorkunks through the ocean deeps

He goes to join his kith and kin

Fight their way through thick and thin!

xxxx—-xxxx—-

NOTHING stops the elephort

And nothing ought!

xxxx—-xxxx—-

Each night he goes to Fanciful

He wades through blood and gore,

Each war is more FANTASTIC

Than he fought the night before!

xxxx—-xxxx—-

But alas, when we get

To the interesting parts

Of ripping off heads and

Tearing out hearts,

xxxx—-xxxx—-

My mother comes in

And gives me a shake,

“ENOUGH!” She yells,

“Time you’re awake!”

xxxx—-xxxx—-

I wish the elephort would come

And chase away my meanie Mum!

28. pre-election missives or entries

Many teachers have the kids write letters to their future selves at the start of the academic year (to be opened in June). I’ve never been one of those teachers, but I’m starting to think I need to be… at least where this historic election is concerned. Here’s what I’m thinking (while trying to [...]

29. Booty Juggler Pirate Game

booty-juggler-robin-davey

We’re rolling with the Pirate theme. First Office’s design for 826 Valencia’s new store and now Booty Juggler, a fun new game designed/animated by Robin Davey and built by Ben Templeton of Thought Den. The look of the game was inspired by vintage poster and animation design, the nautical tattoos of Sailor Jerry, and scruffy screenprinted goodness.

Give it a toss here.

30. Wow!

Check out this Providence Journal article about a student who wrote a persuasive letter to Lowe’s and was granted a response bigger than he ever imagined. Bernardo Garcia wanted mulch for their outside play area, so he wrote a persuasive letter to the executive vice president of store operations for Lowe’s, Michael K. Brown.  Brown, upon returning from [...]

31. Book-making with Caroline Adderson

Did you know that Orca author Caroline Adderson has been named Vancouver Public Library’s 2008 Writer-In-Residence? Before she began writing children’s books, Caroline carved out quite a name for herself writing two award-winning novels with international acclaim, A History of Forgetting and Sitting Practice. Caroline’s collection of short stories for emergent readers, I, Brunowas published with Orca last year. Readers may remember 7-year-old Bruno and his intense dislike of all things green (think: vegetables!).

Besides attending Word on the Street in Vancouver last weekend, Caroline has been busy leading workshops at the Canadian Book Camp as part of her tenure. Coming up this weekend, Caroline will be presenting a book-making workshop with illustrator Kathie Shoemaker. Adults and children are welcome, as Caroline will be gearing this towards ages 4-6.

When: Sunday October 5, 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Where: Vancouver Public Library, Central Branch

To sign up: Pre-registration is required (604-331-4041), but hey, it’s FREE!

For those of you who have been in Bruno-withdrawl all year, you need only wait a few more months! Coming out in Spring 2009 with Orca is the follow-up to
I, Bruno, titled Bruno, For Real, which will be an encore performance of Bruno’s antics.

32. The Big Picture: What are kids thinkin’ on the first day?

I live with a first grader.  Here were her two big concerns prior to the first day of school: One.  Will my teacher be nice?  Two.  Will I have any friends? I think we could ask any student, in any grade, in any school what their top two concerns are prior to starting a new school year and [...]

33. Summary of eBook Reader poll - whether you want an ebook reader or not

I had a poll up for a while on my blog about whether you were thinking of buying an eBook Reader.

For those of you who are curious, here are the results:

Question: Are you thinking of buying an eBook Reader?

Answer times selected answer distribution (%)
1. Definitely! I want one. 5 31%

2. Maybe. It sounds cool, but I
don’t know if I could read books
that way. 0 0%

3. I would if I had the cash. 5 31%

4. No. I prefer paper books. 4 25%

5. I already have one. 2 13%

I realized that those of you who read this blog through an RSS reader will have missed the poll, because I had it on the right-hand sidebar of my blog. So, if you’d like to add your vote, I’ve included the poll below.

34. Evan Geltosky

Evan Geltosky

You may have seen these colorful blocks and the accompanying video where they move, running around on the web lately. It’s the work of Evan Geltosky, a recent Long Beach State graduate. On his site he has some nice typographic work, and a sweet poster/illustration of Mike Tyson!
