1. Fells Point

I stipped this so you could see it without going to the website, plus I added the video!

In the novel, The First Sign, we learn many things about Mercury that makes up not only her character, but also her environment. We learn in the first chapter that she was born and raised in a section of Baltimore known as Fells Point.

Located on the waterfront of the Baltimore harbor, Fells Point is just a short water taxi ride from downtown. It is a historic and beautiful attraction filled with an eclectic array of stores, boutiques, restaurants, bars and eateries. A large percentage of the businesses are locally owned, and they are nestled inside what still looks and feels like that small town world of old. On any given weekend the square is filled with musicians and festive events that entertain and delight both residents and tourists alike.

There is very little not to do down at the Point! From museums to shopping, ghost tours to eateries and all things Maritime, Fells Point is the place to be when visiting Baltimore. All the world's a stage too down at the point, with the theatrical excitement of the The Vagabond Players, who happen to be performing just off of a street named after the greatest writer of the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist*, William Shakespeare! On Shakespeare Street, you will find the home of Mercury Brightman... well kind of, her home doesn't actually exist. What? The street is real, the address is not.

Remember dear readers, Mercury's tale is fictional, as is her home. 1624 Shakespeare Street, no longer exists the way it once did many years ago.

It was one of the last remaining wooden townhouses in the Fells Point region, up until it was torn down not too long ago. If 1624 Shakespeare Street still existed it would be located next door to a shop called Sheep's Clothing. The picture below is of the lot where 1624 once stood.

Fells Point was founded in 1730 by William Fell, an American immigrant and Quaker from Lancaster, England. By 1763 his son, Edward Fell laid out the streets and sold plots for homes. The town quickly grew and eventually became apart of Baltimore Town and Jones Town in 1797 which formed the City of Baltimore. Fells Point was strong in the trades of tobacco, flour, and coffee trades during the 18th and 19th centuries. During the War of 1812, Fells Point was a haven for privateers (pirates) that favored the British fleets and therefore became a target of the British during the war, and led to the attack of Fort McHenry.

From shipbuilding in the Civil War to the proposed to link I-83 and I-95, Fells Point has seen its share of the spectacular and the mundane. The last bar that the famous poet Edgar Allan Poe drank at before his death, is located on Thames Street in Fells Point. The bar is now known as The Horse You Came In On, and local ghost stories will have you believing that he haunts the rooms up stairs. In the early 1990's Fells Point was the location for the TV show Homi
