I’m working on a new kids’ book: Haunted Kids of the Carolinas. It’ll be out next spring. It’s a PERFECT book for school visits, which is the main goal in producing it.
My book designer, Jeff Duckworth of Duck of All Trades, and I have been working on some possible covers. I really, really want input as to which cover people like best. When choosing, keep in mind that this is a book for children, 3rd grade through middle school.
Some notes: the book will have a subtitle (something like 13 Freaky Tales) and these pictures are draft-quality (and may also have watermarks from the stock photo company) at the moment and will be purchased at a higher quality if we use them.
PLEASE COMMENT to tell me which you like, and why, and if you’re a kid and you’re commenting please let me know. Kids’ votes count 2x as much as grownup votes!

I like them in this order:
#3
#1
#2
Sounds like it’s going to be a great book!
My daughter is going to LOVE this book!!
I like No. 2 first. The eyes are compelling and haunting!!
After that it’s No. 3 and No. 1, in that order.
I like the first one best- it’s obscure enough that this could be ANY kid and frankly it’s little scary looking! (which is what you’re going for right?).
Good luck – this is going to be fantastic!
#1 is the best!
I like #1
I prefer 1 and 2 in that order.
#1
I like #1 best because it’s so “everykid.” After that, #1 and then #2. Can’t wait to read it with Javi!
1 then 3 then 2. 2 looks like an abused child to me, less like a ghost than a kid that I should feel sorry for.
Honestly, as a grandmother I think they all might be a bit to scary for a 3rd grader. You want people to pick up the book, not pass it by because they are concerned about the ability of the (younger end of the spectrum) child to be comfortable with the content.
@Sharon – I appreciate your comment, but you should know that the MOST popular category of book in the elementary school library I used to run was the Scary Stories – Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, by Alvin Schwartz, Goosebumps, etc. Most of them have pretty scary covers. I’m not that worried about these covers being too scary! The kids LOVE scary!
