Author, school visitor, book lover, & librarian! (Plus small press owner + mom, too!)
1. Target Arts Grants are available…

And if you want me to come to your school I will help you write one!
Here’s the link to the Target Arts Grant.
The grant is for $2000 and it’s for arts-specific activities in schools, including visiting authors! When I was a school librarian I wrote one for Carol Boston Weatherford to visit my school for the day – she was great but the $2000 only paid for one day of her presence, plus some of her books…and because I’m not as famous as she is I am way, way cheaper! (Truly, she’s more famous than me: she’s won a number of awards and her book, Moses, about Grandma Moses is especially wonderful. I am also very partial to her book about Rosenwald schools: Dear Mr. Rosenwald, as well as the one she wrote about the sit-ins in Greensboro, Freedom on the Menu)
But enough about her! My point is that you can get a whole lotta me for $2000. I’ll come to your school for a week straight for $2000, or every Monday for a month…or I’ll come to your school and 2 others over the course of a week. You get what I’m saying.
And I know I need to update my doings, but I did a bunch of school visits at a local middle school that were all focused on my upcoming book of ghost stories: Haunted Kids of the Carolinas. Very well received, y’all.
And just in case you have other plans for the Target Arts grant, here’s a post on many other grants you can write to get a visiting author to come to your school. NOW IS THE TIME TO THINK ABOUT NEXT YEAR. Grant-writing season is upon us! Good luck, and ask me to come!
