Every book comes out differently. I think almost every writer finds that. The one I'm currently working on, INSTINCT, is very different from my usual contemporary books. And it's taking me a long time to exactly figure out what's going on in the story. Like I'm 30,000 words in and I'm still making discoveries. Characters who pop up suddenly have more connections and importance to the main story line. As they develop, their back stories help me figure out what is going on in the main plot. Does that make sense??
I wrote my first ever synopsis for the story known today as INSTINCT And I know what's happening as far as the main plot and conflict. That for me is big! But as I go through, I'm finding out more about how the main characters in the story are connected by secondary characters. It's kind of cool the way this one is shaping out. It's enjoyable and I'm in the stage where I'm thinking about it all day and trying to figure it all out and get to know discover my characters more in depth.
I think there's going to have to be alot of revision, because as I go through, I'm writing stuff like MORE ACTION HERE. I forget the names of some of the secondary characters in the groove of them coming to life as the story progresses and I write NAME instead of stopping to remember or look up their names.
A thread or relationship will grow or change and I have to go back and make sure the earlier interactions reflect this. It's fun and challenging.
On days like today, I remember why it is I love writing so much!
