Illustration Friday's theme this week is "cocoon" . . . and the little monster tucked safely inside mommy's little tummy is about to birth a whole new project.
This is an early study for a children's book I'm cooking up, all about a little monster and his daddy. If you asked my son Max, he'd tell you it's autobiographical . . . and maybe it is.
After all, all the best stuff comes from taking the hidden stuff out of hiding.

Haha! Justin, you rock :)
This is just wonderful. Apart from the usual body language and eyeball stuff, I like how the styls is so clean and easy to read.
You know, when I read your comment I thought it said "Max and his Monster Dad" ...
todays word is 'mogoopat'
... and now I gotta know what "mogoopat" mean, Fin! Ah, I'm never gonna sleep tonite ...
Thanks for the comment on style. I'm definitely intrigued by the "clean" approach you're talking about, just haven't decided if it's as interesting as the alternatives.
But for now, I like it!
so sweet, I love how their tails are intertwined, and their glances at each other. Very nice!
I don´t usually like sweet, but this is ADORABLE! It makes me want a monster of my own! :-) I like the clean style too, love how you´ve incorporated so much love in their eyes, especially his. And the tails are too cute. Bravo!
Wonderful Justin! The colours you've chosen are nice! I want to see moooore!!! ^___^
Thanks, Celeste! Tails are interesting things -- they can't just lie on the floor. They're ... expressive!
I'm lovin' it, Maria!
More is coming. Stay tuned, 12week buddy!
Hi Janne ... I'm not 100% sure sweet and clean is my thing either, but it's hard to argue with love (especially when it has teeth like that!).
And you're so good with little monsters.
You SHOULD have one of your own!
I love them too Justin, though personally I'm missing your line work and textures, I'd love to see them both ways. Just my 2 cents worth. Take it or leave it; I love them as they are too. I too would like to know what "mogoopat" means...
well, Karen, you've put your finger on my continuing debate about whether I like line-work or not! I think I'm trying to move away from the "comics" feel of my earlier drawings, so dropping the lines forces me to fill in with tones. (I also have to learn how to ink properly, so my line-work improves!) ...
But's this is just a color-study, this piece, so the lines may return!
Oh this is both cute and hilarious! How delightfully sweet!
thanks, Vanessa! That's one maternity ward I'd like to visit (filled with monsters!).
Heehee - YES monster mommies rock! You are really in the zone Justin, I just love your ideas - I'm looking forward to seeing what style(s) you settle on, I love all the ways that you work - definitely staying tuned, this is gonna be awesome!
ps - thanks for the bday wishes!
heh — thanks, Susan! We'll see if my new Wacom changes my style. How could it not?!
This is really great - can't wait for the next chapter of this little guy!
快下班囉~來問個安,跟您打聲招呼 ........................................
thanks! ... did you mean the monster dad, or the "little guy" in mommy's belly? ;)
both have an adventure coming!
..love your monsters..great idea..
