Someone else said, "Life is hard and then you die."
Someone else besides the other someone else said, "Life is hard, but God is good."
That's what I'm holding on to and the fact is, life is hard, with a capital H~A~R~D. You can awake refreshed, to the sun beating on your face through the bedroom window, where just outside a nest of newly hatched finches wait for their morning feeding and the minute you step out of bed... the hard part starts. The part where you remember the car died last night and you need to deal with a reputable mechanic for the best work for as cheaply as possible. The part where you get phone call after phone call of disturbing and/or life altering news.
You step out of bed to conquer the first hurdle of the day, to then turn and face another day of hurdle hopping gone awry. The frustration and grief, the disappointments and despair ooze into the tiny crevices of your heart and begin to permeate the entrance to your spirit, where it will spend the next week tearing the rest of you apart.
Sounds fateful, doesn’t it? Fateful and familiar and, can we just admit it – even hopeless? Hopeless in such a way that you feel as if you are never going to crawl out of the hole you find yourself in. It can be such a very dark hole, can’t it? A place strewn with heartaches and hurt, loneliness and grief.
Unexpected tragedies and unfulfilled expectations. These things seem as if they are sometimes smeared across our lives. Sometimes they just don’t seem to be – they are.
Yet, while we experience heartache, feel hurt, or go through stages of grief, we can be assured that we don’t go through those things alone. While we walk the bumpy roads, travel the dark valleys, and run the race set before us, we need to remember – we have a God, a Savior, and a Friend, who will never leave us. Never forsake us. Never forget us.
Life is hard, but as one of my favorite Christmas cards said, “The best days are yet to come.” Days filled with unwavering faith and unquenchable joy. Days spent in worship and praise before a majestic God who knew exactly what He was doing when He set before us that which we thought we could never endure. However, we did, but only because He did it with us. Just as He promised.
