There was a long chat recently between two clever lads, I've been lucky enough to have both of them write intros to my books: Prof Noam Chomsky (who did the intro to our PARECOMIC book), and Prof Lawrence Krauss (who did the intro to this year's book GOODBYE GOD).
In this clip from that long chat they discuss a third clever lad, who I'm hoping to have some dealings with later: Prof Steven Pinker, and his claims in his 'Better Angels' book that the modern world is far less violent than our hunter-gather past was, which Noam disagrees with. Pinker was keen on anarchism before but became disillusioned with it. Chomsky still is into anarchism, of course.
Ohh, handbags at the ready professors! Intellectual Fight!
Comic books/ graphic novels/ manga have come a long way, over the last 20 or 30 years in gaining more appreciation as an art form worthy of respect/serious consideration/appreciation...
But sometimes I think we comic book folk tend to forget that we still have a long way to go. There is still a feeling that comic books are not sophisticated, most adults have never read any, comics are still dominated by superheroes in the US, even in Japan the more mature style comics are very much in the minority. From Heidi MacDonald Publisher Weekly article on comics in the Library system in the USA: "The misconception that graphic novels are not real books also lingers among some adult librarians, impeding collection building..."
So, a general comment to any of my friends here who are not in the habit of reading comic books/ graphic novels/ manga: this is a wonderful art form, as sophisticated as any other, and not at all 'just for kids'. So, check out some good comic books please!
In the words (almost) of songsters Hal David and Burt Bacharach:
“What the world needs now, is photos of your lunch.
Its the only thing that there’s just too little of…”
Its the only thing that there’s just too little of…”
Or actually: WAY too much of. Enough food photos already!
I think I'm going to start a trend of posting photos of lunch or dinner AFTER it's been eaten. It may not look as nice, but least it's a bit more original.
