"Math Rapmatics: Mathematical Rhymes Right On Time" By Stephanie P. Van Horn
1. "Math Rapmatics" A Hit at Bain Elementary's Community Connection 2013

Presenting "Math Rapmatics" to the graduating class of 2027!

On December 4, 2013 I had the distinct pleasure of bringing math joy to 134 kindergarteners at Bain Elementary's Community Connection Program.  It was very cold and damp outside, but inside it was sizzling hot and sunny. Why was that? Because math was in the house...the school house that is!

I began the author visit by reading the dedication in my book. It is to my mom, Anne. Without her support and love I would not be who and where I am today. Words can not express my appreciation for the values that she taught me. Then I gave a mini math lesson on the math concepts that are covered in the book. We looked at the classroom clock on the wall and discussed that it is called an analog clock. We looked at the hands on the clock and I explained what each does. We looked for congruent shapes in the class. We found them in the ceiling tiles and windows.

Then we hunted for congruent shapes...you know same shape, same size! We found them in the floor tiles, shoes and doors. We then talked about the concept of adding numbers....when you add a number to a number you get a BIGGER number! Finally, I discussed the ravenous appetites of crocodiles. I then told the mathematicians about greater than and less than signs. We would have to help the Hungry Hungry Crocodile find the larger amount of food in the math rap song to fill his hungry tummy.

Finally, the time had come...time to rap, time to dance, time to really get connected with math. To me, this is what it is all about...creating positive interactions with math. It was my hope that a joy for math was stirred way down deep in the souls of the children. A joy that will lead them on a wonderful life-long journey with math.

It is always a blessing for me to share "Math Rapmatics" with children because they are so much fun to be around and they want to learn new concepts. It simply was a wonderful way for me to spend the afternoon.

Thank you for the new support I have seen this year. In fact, I am thankful for all of my Math Rapmatics fans old and new. Each year I am able to share "Math Rapmatics" with new friends. Wow, I will forever be grateful for this journey as an author because you strengthen me along the way.

Wishing you great blessings in the New Year! The best is indeed yet to come!

Much love to you all,
Stephanie
