1. APRIL IS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH DAY 9

Today for STORY IN RHYME I want to suggest you enjoy an illustrated Mother Goose rhyme,

.
Three Little Kittens
written and illustrated by Lorianne Siomade
Publisher: Boyds Mills Press; 1st edition (March 2000)
ISBN-10: 1563978458
ISBN-13: 978-1563978456

Sadly I don't know that it's still in print, but let me tell you why you might like it above other versions of illustrations.  I like it for it's bright and simple style. The style mimics Eric Carle but is not quite his.  Lorianne also has redone Itsy Bitsy Spider in this style and then two newer books that are not just illustrating classical poetry.

From the original poem

.
Three little kittens they lost their mittens,
And they began to cry,
Oh, mother dear, we sadly fear
Our mittens we have lost.
.
What! lost your mittens, you naughty kittens!
Then you shall have no pie.
Mee-ow, mee-ow, mee-ow.
No, you shall have no pie.

NOVEL IN VERSE
.
.
Yellow Star
written by Jennifer Roy
Publisher: Marshall Cavendish
Copyright: c2006
ISBN: 0-7614-5277-X
ISBN 13: 978-0-7614-5277-5

This book, this novel in verse, has a great deal of historical fact about the holocost, not only in the free verse poetry, but also in the preface and the Author's notes.  The book's subject makes a difficult read, but one that should be read.

from the fourth poem
This one made a big impact on me so
I want to share part of it with you.

.
The Star of David
.
Orange
is the color of my coat
with matching muffler
that I got as a present
before the war.
Dora got the same set
only larger and in blue.

Yellow
is the color of
the felt six-pointed star
that is sewn onto my  coat.
It is the law
that all Jews have to wear the
Star of David
when they leave thier house
