26. Society of Illustrator's Lecture tonight in NYC

Well, I'm looking forward to attending a  lecture at the Society of Illustrators in New York City tonight.
Nate Williams will be the speaker and he will be signing his posters after the talk. I love his illustrations and is looking forward to seeing his work. Nate Williams is  the founder of the online illustration community site called  illustrationmundo.com. He will discuss the dynamic between illustrator and art director, how he develops his projects with clients in different markets, why he has 2 different names, how to be seen everywhere even all the way from Buenos Aires, and why it’s important to be part of the illustration community both off and online.
After the lecture, there will be  a wine and cheese networking reception.

Below, Nate Williams Illustration on the bus:

See some of you there tonight!

29. Scrambles And Updates

Well, as the year comes to a close I find myself scrambling to finish a bunch of stuff and send out copies and of Harry & Silvio~which I can not believe how well it's sold so far! I think I sold almost enough copies, along with donations to get my piece to the Society of Illustrators show in January. Thanks everyone!
At the moment I'm still in the midst of agent stuff and working on completing several requested proposals. I think by early January loose ends will get tied up and things will start to take shape. By then I hope I'll have exciting news to share. At the moment everything still feels up in the air.
I'm re-posting the detail from my Green skies painting because I'm going to try and get it off for the next Spectrum Annual deadline which is coming up. I'm going to enter a few pieces. Anyway, sorry about the vagueness of this post but I hope to have some solid news soon.

30. I Made It IntoThe society Of Illustrators Annual!

I got great news today!
My drawing, Guardians Of Autumn, which I did for the Totoro Project auction got into the Society Of Illustrators annual! I can't believe it! This means a lot to me, the Society was founded in 1902 by illustrators such as Maxfield Parrish, N.C. Wyeth and Howard Pyle. This competition is the most prestigious of it's kind and I had absolutely no expectations of being selected. In fact when I got the call from New York I called them back to make sure they were right. This is great for me but is also great publicity for the Totoro fund which is helping to preserve Sayama Forrest in Japan from over development.

31. SOI opening in NY

Peter de Seve speaking at the SOI show (click for video)

I feel so out of touch with the NYC illustrator glitterati these days. Here's a clip from the recent SOI show. I recognize a couple of faces, but not as many as I should.

The Society of Illustrators building on East 63rd is so cool. They have a permanent collection, then host events and the yearly show, shown in this video.

(I had no idea that Richard Solomon's building was lost when that crane fell a while back. No idea at all. Its tragic, and such a loss. Loss of life (not him), loss of artwork, loss of a piece of real estate and business 'home'.)

I remember back in school how we used to pour over the Illustrator's Annual and drool over the award winners. We all aspired to that level. Then real life happened to most of us, and we took "regular jobs" or had families or still did illustration but not that kind (I myself started working as an in-house illustrator and designer for a company that did animated retail displays, like the big fancy department store Christmas windows). Very few of us, even the "stars" in school, went on to the big leagues and became SOI award winning illustrators.

I stopped collecting the annuals long ago, and actually sold or gave them all away when I moved from San Francisco a couple of years ago. They were dead weight. Funny how you change your perspective on things. There once was a time when I used to search the used book shops for old ones.

This week I'm working on another "fine art" piece similar to that last one (one of a series of The Four Seasons), then I have some childrens book work lined up. I just put another scarf up in my etsy shop, and have some other knitted pieces I want to take over to a local shop. I received my nice paper for prints from Red River Paper so have to figure those out too.

What I really feel like doing is making a nice home made lasagna.

32. A Workshop I am Excited About!

I just got an email today from the Society of Illustrators announcing a workshop with Illustrator Marcos Chin. He is pretty famous for his illustrations for the Lavalife ad campaign that is all over NYC. I can't be more excited since I am a big fan of his work (plus all that time sitting in the subway staring at his ads and wondering how he did it.) I signed up after 2 minutes I got the email.

This workshop requires that you "bring your own fully charged laptop," which I thought was really funny. Even though I am a digital artist and I do indeed have a laptop, I've never gone to a workshop that runs that way. Welcome to the new age of technology.

Another note- The Original Art show is now up at the Society of Illustrators, which showcases art from children's books of the year. I haven't gotten a chance to check it out yet, but will hopefully go this weekend (and dreaming to be in the show one day.) Running now till November 26th.
