On the 11th day of Christmas my true love gave to me 11 pipers piping
Switching up things a little bit today. Today I'm posting the contest before the main holiday post. Got to keep you guessing. :-)
Just two more days to go, and today's prize is a paperback copy of Santa Pawsby Nicholas Edwards. This is another great Christmas book that's now out of print. My friends loved this one when were were in elementary school.
About the Book (from back cover): "The worse winter ever. The worst time to be homeless.
He was just a puppy when he found himself alone. Cold and alone in the dead of winter. He needed food, and water, and a warm place to sleep. He needed to find a way to survive by himself.
But who has rescued a drowingin boy, found a blind girl's wallet, and helped a family escape from a burning house? Could it be the lost puppy?"
To enter, please leave a comment below or send me an email with the subject line "Eleventh Day of Christmas". If you haven't read them already, make sure you read the Contest Rules. On the 10th day of Christmas my true love gave to me 10 lords a-leaping
Wow, are we on 10 already? Where is December disappearing to? Just a two more days (and two more prizes) to go...
Today you can win a hardback copy of Jingle Boyby Kieran Scott.
About the Book (from Amazon.com): "Sixteen-year-old Paul Nicholas is a self-confessed Christmas fanatic. That’s why he’s so smitten with Sarah—a girl who smells like peppermint and thinks picking out presents to the strains of “Winter Wonderland” is the ultimate afternoon activity. But when he catches Sarah making out with Santa Claus at the Paramus Park mall, his dad’s over-the-top lights catch the Nicholas house on fire, and his mom gets fired from Fortunoff’s because of something he did for Christmas for Sarah, Paul gets caught in a downward spiral of holiday gloom. This year, the spirit of Scrooge has settled in—and it’s not going to be pretty. Or will the spirit of the holiday prevail?"

On the 6th day of Christmas my true love gave to me 6 geese a-laying
Today's prize is a paperback copy of of French Kissmasby Cathy Hapka. This is the Christmas book in the S.A.S.S. (Students Across the Seven Seas) series. Nothing like a good travel romance to get you in the mood for the holidays...
About the Book (from the back cover): "For Nicole Larson, the Christmas season in Paris is more than just a romantic interlude—it’s also a homecoming. Nic studied abroad in Paris a year ago, and is back in town with her friend Annike to spend Christmas and New Year’s in the City of Light. Of course, now that Nic is there, the chemistry she once had with Parisian hottie Luc instantly reignites. But why fuel a romance that has only three weeks to survive? Nic would rather spend time with her new buddy Mike . . . until it becomes clear that Mike is also interested in being more than just friends. With a backdrop of twinkling lights on the Champs-Elysées and Parisian Christmas carols, it’s going to be difficult for Nic to deny the romance around her. . . ."

On the 6th day of Christmas my true love gave to me 6 geese a-laying
Hmmm. First off let me say that if you haven't read today's review post, this prize won't make much sense to you. You've been warned. I would go and read that first if I were you.
Today's prize is a gently used hardback copy of of Christmastime by Sandra Boynton. This is out of print and it is probably one of my all-time favorite Christmas books. So I serched high and low and found a copy to give to you, my lovely readers. Since I'm not giving up my own, you know! Did I mention it was out of print?
About the Book (from the back cover): "What is surely the jolliest time of the year? What day involves a whole season of intensive preparation? What magical mid-winter event is celebrated with an exuberance of song, food and drink, and an abundance of green? What is the most compelling occasion for the gathering together of family and friends to exult in a common spirit of joy and wonder and reverence and hope?
The answer, of course, is Super Bowl Sunday, but unfortunately Sandra Boynton knows very little about football so she chose instead to write about Christmastime.
With guest appearances by Santa and his reindeer, Boynton's familiar menagerie reveals the many joys and satisfactions that make Christmastime such a universally special season. Full-color drawings throughout. A humorous and compassionate carol that makes the perfect gift."

On the 3rd day of Christmas my true love gave to me 3 French hens
Today's prize is a paperback copy of The Gift Of The Magi And Other Stories by O. Henry. The title story of this collection is one of my favorite Christmas stories. And although the other short stories aren't Christmas related, the first one is a great story to add to your Christmas reading traditions.
About the book (from back cover): "A young woman makes a drastic decision -- and her husband has a Christmas surprise in return. A dying girl attaches her fate to that of a leaf. A writer sobs at the sight of a menu. A detective tracks a thief to an unexpected hideout. An unforgettable collection from a master of the short story -- where the ending is never what you expect."

On the 2nd day of Christmas my true love gave to me 2 turtle doves
Since today's post was about giving books for Christmas, I'm giving you a book about giving presents (loose connection, I know, but it works, okay?).
Today's prize is a gently used paperback copy of Secret Santa by Sabrina James.
About the Book (from Amazon.com): "A game of Secret Santa has everybody guessing. Presents? Kisses? Maybe both.
Noelle, a hopeless romantic, just knows that her gifts have to be from her senior crush! And geeky Froggy thinks the game is the perfect way to get super-popular Celia to fall for him...except she thinks his gifts are from Jake, the school's resident bad boy, and starts to crush on him! Romantic mishaps abound, but all is revealed the night of the Winter Dance, where there's more than one surprise waiting under the mistletoe! "

On the 1st day of Christmas my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree...
It's time for the first contest of the 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway-a-Day. And, no, it's not a partridge in a pear tree. But thanks for paying attention!
Today's prize is a hardback copy of The Princess Present: A Princess Diaries Book by Meg Cabot.
About the Book (from Amazon.com): "Mia would give all the jewels in Genovia for the perfect present
Every year, Princess Mia spends the holidays in Genovia with Grandmere. This year, she's looking forward to the most perfect Christmas ever: her boyfriend, Michael, and her best friend, Lilly, are coming to Genovia, too.
But even a princess's plans can go awry. Lilly has a lot to learn about palace protocol, and with all the state holiday functions Mia must attend, there's no time to linger under the mistletoe with Michael. Worst of all, Mia hasn't been able to find him the perfect gift.
Can Mia stop her (bah-hum)bugging long enough to see that the perfect present has nothing to do with international express courier -- and everything to do with real love? (Though some shiny silver ribbon never hurts ...)"

As I mentioned in the introduction post, there will be contests during this event. I call it the 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway-a-Day. (I know, original title).
Starting tomorrow (Decemeber 2nd) there will be a new contest posted every day for 12 days. I scoured the world to find as many Christmas or holiday themed books as I can, and here's your chance to win them!
Unfortunately with contests also comes rules. Rather than repost these every day I'm posting the "long version" of the rules here. You'll see an abbreviated version of these on every contest post, but these rules apply to EVERY contest posted in the next few days. You've been warned.
1. All contests will be open until midnight on December 20th, 2009. This is so I can get the prizes off to you before Christmas if possible.
2. Everyone is allowed one automatic entry into the contests. There will be details on how to win extra entries on individual posts. If you cannot enter by commenting, you can email me your entry.
3. When commenting, do NOT leave your email address in the comments! This is to protect your privacy. Any comments with emails will be deleted and you won't be entered.
4. Winners will have 3 days (72 hours) to send me their address once winners are announced on December 21st. If the prize has not be claimed by then a new winner will be chosen.
5. All contests are open internationally unless otherwise specified.
6. No dishonesty is allowed! Those caught cheating will have all entries deleted from all current and all future contests. Period.
7. Extra entries will be noted on each individual contest. However, you can also gain extra entries by doing the following. Mention these with your contest entries (not this post) or you will not gain credit.
+5 (one time) for submitting a guest post
+1 (for each contest) for grabbing the A Shady Glade Christmas button. You can find it at the bottom of this post.
And now that the rules are over, you will find each giveaway as it is posted linked below. Keep checking back to see each new contest!

Time for a new contest! Although, if you haven't already, make sure you enter the running Contest Monday post too.
But back to this contest. I've been wanting a button for my blog for awhile now, and I'm not graphically inclined at all.
So this is where you come in! To enter this contest, all you have to do is make me a button. I need:
1. A Shady Glade button
2. A Book Swaps button
3. I don't want to post this on the general blog yet, as it will ruin the surprise, but if you'd like details on this one, you can email and ask.
Sizing can be as big or little as you want, but I'd like entries to be able to be shrunk/cropped down to fit in a sidebar.
You can do one, two, or all three buttons. It's completely up to you. The winner will get a book of their choice from all those I have available. (For a preview of what you might be able to get you can check here or here for ideas. Just remember, I have a lot more that I'm not listing either place.) Or, you can get a free entry (you don't have to pay the entrance fee) into my upcoming virtual book swap. Your choice. There will be a winner for each type of button. Or one person will win multiple prizes. Depends on how many people enter. Oh, and of course you will get recognition on the blog and never ending praise and adoration from me. :D
Open internationally. Contest ends when I get enough entries. We'll see when it happens.
To send in your entry, shoot me an email at shadyglade(AT)mail(DOT)com with the word "button" or "contest" in the subject line somewhere so your email doesn't get deleted.
Questions? Just ask! Good luck to everyone.

Time for a new contest!
This one's going to be a little different, although it should sound familiar to some of you. Here's the idea. I'm so very grateful to all the fabulous authors I had the pleasure of hosting here at The Shady Glade during my blogoversary. So what better way to say thank you than purchasing their books? The author gets to share their book with a new reader, you get a great book to read, plus I'm giving away a bunch of books to those who enter. But more on that in a minute. First,
How to Enter: Simply buy one or more of the books by one of the authors featured during last month's blogoversary (you'll find a list at the bottom of the page for your reference). Then email me a copy (or screenshot) of your receipt or pre-order along with your name, email, and mailing address. Each book you buy = 1 entry.
Prizes: Because that's the most important part right? Winners of this contest will have a shot at these four books:
Whether or not there are split up or won as a group depends on the number of entries received. I may also add additional prizes if I get lots of entries. So go enter!
Misc. Rules: Books must be purchased between September 1st and the end of the contest. Open internationally! You can get one entry for each book you buy. Contest is open until October 31st at midnight. Winners will be randomly selected from the entries.

As promised, here are the answers to the book covers contest. Remember that I hinted that all these had something in common? Did you figure it out? If not, here's the answer: All of these book covers have been shown on my blog at one point throughout the last three years. You would have found them all by searching through my blog archives.
And with that, here's the answers for each one. I've highlighted where each section came from on the actual cover. If you'd like a closer look you can click on each picture to enlarge it.

So I know I had mentioned that this would be posted on October 5th, but I'm posting it a little early so that prizes can start being mailed on the 5th instead. So here's all the winners from the blogoversary contests. We're going to start at the top and work our way down.First off, the winner of September's comment contest, for a prize of a brand new ARC of How to Say Goodbye in Robot. There were a record 195 entries this month. The number generator picked lucky comment number 2 as the winner which is Liz(liztapioka14).
Moving right along we have three winners from the Blogoversary Birthday contest. We were just one comment short of four prizes, can you believe it? Anyway, the winner of the hardback copy of Shadowed Summer
is Lori(Pure Imagination). The winner of the ARC of Prism
is Paradox. And last but not least, the winner of the ARC of Recipe for Disaster
is Misty. Congratulations to all of you!
The Gift Card Contest got a lot of entries, more than any other contest last month. According to the results, the top three books that people are looking forward to reading are Catching Fire, Fire, and Catching Fire. Sounds like a good list! And the winner of the $10 gift card is mytwogirls.Thank you to everyone who took the survey for the blogoversary. I'm having fun going through your selections. But I also need to especially thank haleymathiot, who is the winner of the ARC of I Can't Keep My Own Secrets: Six-Word Memoirs by Teens Famous & Obscure
.
Both of the next contests were a lot of fun to plan, and I enjoyed reading your responses too. Apparently finding answers to the First Lines Contest was a little easier that it's follow up. But someone still gets the prize pack which includes an ARC copy of Prada and Prejudice
by Mandy Hubbard, a signed copy of Dream Spinner
by Bonnie Dobkin, and a paperback copy of Poison Ink
by Christopher Golden. And that person is Erica (the Book Cellar).
Although it was harder, the Book Covers Contest still got quite a few entries. I also appeared to be more addicting than the simple matching required by the First Lines Contest. The person who wins the prize pack of a new ARC of Pretty Dead
by Francesca Lia Block, a signed copy of White Is for Magic
by Laurie Faria Stolarz, and a new hardback copy of Attack of the Green Goo
by D.J. Milky for this contest is Bittahsweet Harmony. For everyone else, keep your eye on the blog in the next few days, because I will be posting the answers to both of these contests soon.
Our next blogoversary contest was the Contest Monday entry for a brand new hardcopy of the novel Gone. The person who is now a proud owner of this book is Faye. Got a lot of response for this one, making it one of the most popular Contest Mondays ever (right behind Catching Fire and Shiver).
Now I have a signed ARC copy of Lisa Ann Sandell's new book A Map Of The Known World
. This was of course our first author interview contest. So if you missed that interview (and those of the ones below) you can click through to read those posts. And congratulations to Celi.a, who is the winner!
Now to give away a signed paperback copy of Bewitching Season
by Marissa Doyle. The winner of the book is bookbutterflyangel. I also have two runners up who are now proud owners of a wooden fan advertising Marissa's historical blog. Those winners are throuthehaze and queen of entropy. And by the way, thank you to everyone who suggested the titles for her next book. She was really grateful for the ideas!
I was so happy to see that most of you loved the advice contained in Zoe's article. And a lot of you agreed the UK covers were better too. :) Here's a lucky winner who will be getting the UK paperbacks of The Swan Kingdom
and Daughter of the Flames
. That winner is The_Book_Queen!
Who wants a signed copy of Beyond Cool
by Bev Katz Rosenbaum? How about Bunny B as our winner! I got some really interesting answers for this contest, so you might want to click over and read some of the answers in the comments. I've also got some bookmarks to give away, which you'll see crop up down at the bottom of the post.
A brand new signed copy of The King's Rose
(which, by the way has been nominated for a Cybil this year) by Alisa Libby is on the way to a winner by the name of A. Nicole. Hope you enjoy it!
Almost done here. This list is sure starting to get long... Winner of the Give Up The Ghost Swag Pack generously donated by author Megan Crewe is Lilibeth Ramos! One last prize to give away. This is for the brand new ARC of The Amanda Project: Book 1: invisible I
. I know, I know, I'm ending this one Contest Monday giveaway a little earlier, but I want to make sure that I can send it off on time. So the winner of this one is Jenny N.
And that's it. Phew! I'm a little tired out from all that typing. Congrats to all our winners! If you won something, send me an email with your mailing address to claim your prize! Remember you only have one week before a new winner will be picked. So claim them early!
You may have also noticed there was one missing. If you entered for a Chasing Brooklyn Bookmark, then send me your mailing address as well. First 7 emails I get will get one as well as some other cool book swag.

So, as I mentioned yesterday, nominations for the Cybils opened yesterday and will remain open until October 15th. If you are new to the Cybils and missed that post, you may want to check it out before reading this.
If you're familiar with the Cybils, then you know that this first part of the awards totally depends on those who participate in the nominating process. Without our nominators, we don't have any titles to read! Or if someone doesn't nominate it, we may miss out on that one book that would have stood out beyond all others.
So you may have figured out this is a contest from the post title, and it is. I'm getting to it now. I'm thanking those of you who help participate in the Cybils this year with a contest. If you win, you can win these 2008 Cybils nominees:
Must Love Black
How to Enter: Nominate a title that is eligible for this year's Cybils. Then leave me a comment here (or send me an email) and let me know. That's it! Plus, if you nominate a Graphic Novel title (and then let me know about it) I will give you 3 extra entries! Why? Because that's the committee I'm on this year, and I am a little out of touch with the books that were published this year in that particular field. I know at least some of you readers read graphic novels, so if you had one that you particularly liked, go enter it!
Extra Entries: IF you have already entered, then you can also earn extra entries:
+1 Nominating any eligible title (if you have already nominated that still counts, just let me know)
+3 Nominating a Graphic Novel title.
+1 Linking to the contest somewhere on the web
+2 For every person who says they were referred by your link
+1 If you were referred
That's 8 possible entries! Plus, if more than one person is referred by you, then you'll get even more entries.
Misc. Rules: This contest will be open until nominations close (October 15th) when the winner will be randomly selected to win. I also might decide the split up the prize pack or add more prizes depending on how many entries I get. I haven't decided yet. So spread the word and participate!
About the Books (from Amazon.com)
Kaimira: The Sky Village
Half a world away, thirteen-year-old Rom struggles to survive in the ruins of Las Vegas. When his young sister is taken by a pair of demonic creatures, Rom has no choice but to follow her into a shadowy world below ground. There, he becomes engaged in gladiator-style fighting in an arena where mehanical-beast demons do battle for the entertainment of a chaotic community of gamblers.
Mei and Ron have never met, but they share a common journal, a book that mysteriously allows them to communicate. It also reveals that each of them carries the strange and frightening kaimira gene and that aspects of beast and mek qualities are entwined in their very DNA.
In this thrilling, intricately plotted novel, the first in a five-book series, Mei and Rom must overcome the forces that seek to destroy them and find the courage to balance the powers that lurk within."
Must Love Black
Switch
Ever since Claire hit her teens, electrical storms have been making her switch bodies. Usually she's back to her old self in no time. But when something goes terribly wrong, she finds herself stuck in the fabulous body—and life—of Larissa, the icy blonde beauty who has caught the eye of Nate, Claire's longtime crush.
Will Claire ever figure out how to get her old life back? And, more importantly, will she even want to?"

Well, one week from today the festivities will be over. I hope you have been enjoying the blogoversary, and those of you who are new will decide to stick around even after it's all over. My regular readers will tell you that we have fun even when we're not partying.
Anyway, this post is a reminder to enter some of the contests before they are over. I know some of you think you never win anything, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to point out several of the contests that still have very good odds. So if you haven't entered yet, go enter!
First of all, if you haven't noticed, a third prize has been added to the Blogoversary Birthday Contest. If I get another 25 comments, a fourth prize (and a fourth winner) will go up.

The survey contest- 1 winner, currently 27 people entered
The First Lines Contest- 1 winner, currently 1o people entered
The Covers Contest- 1 winner, currently 8 people entered
Now for some contests that you won't have noticed unless you've been paying close attention to my author posts. Ah, didn't read all the way to the bottom of those? Then you've missed all these great books, since I didn't post these in the sidebar. Now that we only have a week left to enter, these will go up in the sidebar later today as a reminder. So for those of you who've entered these contests before this post goes up, I'm giving you one free extra entry for every contest you've entered. How's that for being on your toes? And the rest of you, you still have a chance, so make sure you enter now. All right?

Yes, it's time for another random contest. And it's going to be a big one! And in honor of my big blogoversary bash, I'm giving you all month to enter.
So here's the idea. Authors work really hard to get the first lines of their novels just right. But by the time you finish a book, you spend more time thinking about how it ended rather than how it started. So this contest pages homage to all that great thought and energy that goes into those first sentences and which so often get overlooked.Prize: The winner of this random contest will get a prize pack that includes:
- an ARC copy of Prada and Prejudice
by Mandy Hubbard,
- a signed copy of Dream Spinner
by Bonnie Dobkin,
- and a paperback copy of Poison Ink
by Christopher Golden.
Excited? Want to win? Well, here's how:
How to Enter: I've selected 36 books from my bookshelves (one for each month I've been blogging) and scrambled their first sentences. All you have to do is match them up correctly. The person who correctly identies the most wins! Make sure you completely read the rules first, or you may get disqualified!
Rules:
- Contest is open until midnight PST on September 30th, 2009.
- This contest is open internationally!
- Email me your answers and include the subject line "First Lines Contest"
- DO NOT post your answers in the comments. They will be deleted and you won't get credit!
- Please don't share your answers with other. The whole point is to have fun, so please don't ruin it for everyone else.
- If you don't follow the rules, then you can't win, so follow the rules! :)
- The winner will be the one who gets the most correct. If there is a tie, the winner will be randomly selected from those tied for first, and the runners up will get an entry to win the gift card.
- Winner will have one week to claim thier prize before another winner is chosen. Full rules about claiming prizes can be found here.

About the Book (From Amazon.com): "Iris is ready for another hot, routine summer in her small Louisiana town, hanging around the Red Stripe grocery with her best friend, Collette, and traipsing through the cemetery telling each other spooky stories and pretending to cast spells. Except this summer, Iris doesn’t have to make up a story. This summer, one falls right in her lap.Years ago, before Iris was born, a local boy named Elijah Landry disappeared. All that remained of him were whispers and hushed gossip in the church pews. Until this summer. A ghost begins to haunt Iris, and she’s certain it’s the ghost of Elijah. What really happened to him? And why, of all people, has he chosen Iris to come back to?"

How about another random contest? That last one was a little too easy. This time I'm going to make you work for your bread. Here's the task: Find a quote from a movie or TV show that regards books/reading in some way. I'll give you some examples:
Beauty and the Beast:
"How can you read this? There's no pictures!"
"It's not right a for a girl to read."
The Princess Bride:
"Is this a kissing book?"
You get the idea. So here's the rules. Leave me a comment below with your quote, and make sure you tell me where it's from! If you forget that part, I'll have to disqualify you! You can leave up to four (4) different quotes. Bonus points if you can find a YouTube video that contains your quote. Leave that link in your comment as well. A winner will be randomly selected in two weeks, which will be on July 8th. You have until then to enter.
Want to know what you're playing for? The winner of this contest will get a book of their choice from the list at the end of this post. So start searching, and good luck!
