Press Release

4th April 2012 ~ For Immediate Release

Strange Chemistry Signs Julianna Scott and Laura Lam for Two Books Apiece

Strange Chemistry, the YA imprint of Angry Robot Books, is delighted to announce the signing of two more fantastic YA authors for 2013: Julianna Scott and Laura Lam.

Julianna Scott has been signed for a two-book deal – negotiated by Strange Chemistry’s Amanda Rutter and Carly Watters of the P.S. Literary Agency – starting with The Holders. Laura Lam has also signed a two-book deal – negotiated by Amanda Rutter and Juliet Mushens of Peters Fraser and Dunlop – starting with Pantomime.

Both titles will be published in the Spring of 2013.

About The Holders

17-year-old Becca has spent her whole life protecting her brother – from their father leaving and from the people who say the voices in his head are unnatural. When two strangers appear with apparent answers to Ryland’s “problem” and details about a school in Ireland where Ryland will not only fit in, but prosper, Becca is up in arms.

She reluctantly agrees to join Ryland on his journey and what they find at St. Brigid’s is a world beyond their imagination. Little by little they piece together information about their family’s heritage and the legend of the Holder race that decrees Ryland is the one they’ve been waiting for.

But they are all, especially Becca, in for a surprise that will change what they thought they knew about themselves and their kind.

About Julianna Scott

clip_image003
Julianna was born In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and spent the majority of her educational career convinced she would be a musician.

However, after receiving her music degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, she realized that she’d been born in the wrong era for her dreams of singing jazz to adoring fans clad in zoot-suits and flapper dresses to come true, and began to wonder if her true calling might be elsewhere.

While Julianna had always excelled in writing throughout school, she’d never considered it a career possibility until about three years ago, when she came up with her first story idea and decided to go for it. She grabbed her laptop, started typing away, and has never looked back.

You can visit Julianna’s website at http://juliannascottauthor.com.

Amanda said: “The Holders showcases an utterly engaging new voice in YA fiction – with supernatural powers and a gripping love story set against the stunning backdrop of Ireland. I was enthralled and know you will be too.”

Julianna said
: “I am so excited to be a Strange Chemistry author! It is truly a dream come true!”

STRANGE CHEMISTRY ANNOUNCES TWO-BOOK DEAL FOR GWENDA BOND

After the massive news last week about Strange Chemistry’s first two authors, we are delighted to add another stellar name to our launch roster!

Strange Chemistry are thrilled to announce the signing of Gwenda Bond, in a two book deal with World English rights concluded between Amanda Rutter and Jennifer Laughran, of the Andrea Brown Literary Agency, Inc. The first book, Blackwood, will be one of the imprint’s September 2012 launch titles, with the second following in 2013.

ABOUT BLACKWOOD

On Roanoke Island, the legend of the 114 people who mysteriously vanished from the Lost Colony hundreds of years ago is just an outdoor drama for the tourists, a story people tell. But when the island faces the sudden disappearance of 114 people now, an unlikely pair of 17-year-olds may be the only hope of bringing them back.

Miranda, a misfit girl from the island’s most infamous family, and Phillips, an exiled teen criminal who hears the voices of the dead, must dodge everyone from federal agents to long-dead alchemists as they work to uncover the secrets of the new Lost Colony. The one thing they can’t dodge is each other.

Blackwood is a dark, witty coming of age story that combines America’s oldest mystery with a thoroughly contemporary romance.

32. [PR] Robot Army Incoming: Announcing the Return of Open Door!

{Ed. Here’s a press release that should be of interest to all aspiring novelists!  Get busy polishing off that manuscript – you’ve got until April 16th to get it prepped for submission!  Good luck!}

ANGRY ROBOT ANNOUNCES YET MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEBUT NOVELISTS

During April last year, Angry Robot Books temporarily suspended its usual submission policy to run its first Open Door Month; accepting unsolicited, un-agented manuscripts from would-be genre fiction authors.

The scheme was a huge success: nearly 1,000 submissions resulted in publishing contracts for three authors – Cassandra Rose Clarke, Lee Collins, and Lee Battersby – and the commissioning of at least six brand new novels for publication for the Angry Robot lists in 2012 and 2013.

Today, Angry Robot are announcing that Open Door will return, with a second phase running from April 16th – April 30th 2012. During this frantic fortnight the floodgates will once more be opened to admit brand new work by hopeful (and, of course, hugely talented) writers from across the globe.

This time around, the rules are slightly different. Angry Robot will only be considering submissions that meet the following genre criteria:

a) Epic Fantasy – ideally with a bit of an edge or the sort of left-field twist the Angry Robot audience has come to expect.

b) YA – any subject welcome, but must be science fiction or fantasy, and intended for a Young Adult audience, for potential publication via Angry Robot’s new Strange Chemistry imprint.

Answering your questions about Press Release structure. Timing: Press release can be “for immediate release”, or “release on a specific date”.  It is recommended to use the first preference since the latter may not be honored at all times.   Target: To whom the press release is intended. When targeting a specific group of people or professions, it may read like the following: Attention sports editors, Attention business editors, Attention entertainment editors.   Headline: This can be opted to write in all capital letters. VIZ MEDIA TO DEBUT WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP ALPHA

NORTH AMERICA’S ONLY NEAR-SIMULTANEOUS

DIGITAL MANGA MAGAZINE

WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP ALPHA Brings Fans The Most Popular Manga In The World Faster Than Ever Before

San Francisco, CA, October 14, 2011 – VIZ Media, the largest distributor and licensor of anime and manga in the North America, announces the countdown to the launch of WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP ALPHA (WEEKLY SJ ALPHA), a weekly serial anthology of some of the most popular manga series in the world: BAKUMAN?, BLEACH, NARUTO, NURA: RISE OF THE YOKAI CLAN, ONE PIECE, and TORIKO. The first issue of WEEKLY SJ ALPHA goes on sale January 30, 2012, and will be available through VIZManga.com and the VIZ Manga apps for iPhone™, iPod™ touch and iPad™.

Each new digital issue of WEEKLY SJ ALPHA brings manga fans in North America the latest chapters of their favorite series only two weeks after it debuts in Japan’s massively popular WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP Magazine. Currently, Japanese releases are often several months to years ahead of North American print titles; WEEKLY SJ ALPHA eliminates the delay in unprecedented fashion.

“Simultaneously publishing an official translation of the most popular comics magazine in the world has been a dream since manga publishing began in North America in the 1980s,” said Alvin Lu, Senior Vice President & General Manager. “This is how manga is meant to be read in English – weekly, current, authorized and on the go. Now with WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP ALPHA, it’s about to happen for real.”

WEEKLY SJ ALPHA will be made available through an annual membership that provides access to 48 weekly issues for 52 weeks for just $25.99. Single issues of WEEKLY SJ ALPHA can be read for a four-week rental from the time the reader purchases it for only $0.99. Each issue, once received on one device, can be read on all other enabled devices through the easy-to-use integrated VIZ Manga app and website.

To prepare fans for the debut of WEEKLY SJ ALPHA, VIZ Media is also offering the SHONEN JUMP DIGITAL WARP, a limited collection of digital graphic novel speed-ups that will bring North American readers up-to-date with Japanese releases. In some cases, the digital speed-ups will jump ahead of the print releases in North America. The SHONEN JUMP DIGITAL WARP will begin with NARUTO Volume 53 (available now) and BLEACH Volume 49 (coming soon).

As more fans migrate to the digital WEEKLY SJ ALPHA edition, VIZ Media plans to phase out the print edition of SHONEN JUMP Magazine. The popular, one-of-a-kind monthly magazine led the rapid growth of the manga market for much of the last decade and was VIZ Media’s flagship publication since it launched in 2003. The farewell April 2012 issue hits newsstands March 2012.

Good-bye Geist: A new story for America’s #1 Source for Original Doujin Manga

GEN Manga Entertainment, Inc. Announces the Release of GEN 6

GEN 6 will be available on Oct 11th, 2011

NEW YORK, NY – GEN Manga Entertainment, Inc. announces the upcoming release of GEN 6. GEN 6 (ISBN: 978-0-9836134-4-2, Trade Paper, 160 pages, black and white) will be available on Oct 11th, 2011 (www.genmanga.com).

Good-bye Geist, the newest story for the leading edge magazine GEN, presents a new mystery that is engulfing the face of Yuki’s high school. And Yuki is caught in the middle. As she battles the exhausting crowds of her daily commute she, like many other young girls in Japan, is sexually violated. All the while, another young boy is secretly filming her and someone is brutally slaughtering cats. What does it all mean? Enigma spins into ever darkening chasms in the newest edition to GEN.

With the newest edition to the underground anthology, GEN Manga Entertainment also meets fan demand with the release of dual single and spread version PDFs available for download. Not only can readers still download and keep original manga on their computer desktops but they can also choose how they want to read it! Single page viewing will now make it easier for fans to read their favorite manga on their favorite reading devices.

GEN is the leading edge of original Japanese manga innovation. But will American manga fans prove their support? In a recent news release it appears even major power houses like Shogakukan are taking notice with the (3 months too late for GEN’s debut) news release of dual language publication plans. Also, Jmanga’s move for online publication of new titles made news a couple months after GEN’s debut. Can underdogs without large corporate backing compete even when they are ahead of the thinking curve? Fans can show their support for innovative work at the GEN manga booth at one of the biggest comic and anime festivals in America, the NY Comic Con. GEN will be at the New York Comic Con, booth 2030.

Presenting new indie manga circles from Japan, GEN 6, a monthly publication, will be released in the US on Oct 11th. Digital format for GEN is available now. Based in New York, GEN Manga Entertainment (www.genmanga.com) endeavors to publish new and unseen graphic work from Japan, being in the unique position to bring readers work first, more original and untamed manga will be sure to come!

41. New Shel Silverstein?!

As a kid, I LOVED Shel Silverstein's books. I think I borrowed Where the Sidewalk Ends from the local library more than any other book from ages 6-10, mainly because it was just so darn funny! And in an event that I can now refer to as a huge compliment to Mr. Silverstein (though was quite embarrassing at the time), I even attempted to pass some of his poems off as my own. Yep...I plagerized Shel Silverstein. I was about 7 and brought his book up to my room, proceeded to copy four or five of the poems in about 20 minutes and quickly ran downstairs to tell my mother I had decided to become a poet, handing her the poems. I was so  proud of myself. She, however, was not impressed and I was punished for lying. So tragic.

Now, even all these years later, kids are still entranced by the silliness that is a Silverstein poem. His family has apparently given permission for some never-before-seen poems and drawings to be published in a fourth collection, hitting shelves tomorrow. If you were a big fan like I was or are just now introducing your children or students to the hilarity inside these books, make sure you check out the new one!

44. NEWS STORY or REGURGITATED PRESS RELEASE? There's a website that will help you tell the difference

I have slightly mixed feelings about this as I occasionally teach a class on how to write a press release that is so like a 'proper' news story that it will get published just the way you've written it. Good PR is about getting the message across and winning those all important column inches, of course, and in the case of my students the message is usually something along the lines of local-author-signs-books-at-out-of-town-community-centre and they need all the help they can get to have anyone pop along who hasn't been bribed by the promise of a pint afterwards or is related by blood...
But what about the big stories? Are they the product of a journalist asking questions or a very biased press release?
You can find out by visiting Churnalism, an independant website set up by a media charity. (Click on the title of this post to go straight there.) All you have do is paste in any news story that raises your suspicions.
‘Churnalism’ is defined as a news article that is published as journalism, but is essentially a press release without much added.
I predict that we are going to see more and more churned out stories as staffing levels in editorial departments are slashed. And when it comes to things that matter we do need people to ask questions.

45. The Secrets of the Storytelling Profession

Over at the International Storytelling School I have been busy building a catalog of answers to the most interesting questions on the Art of Storytelling.

Most of the answers are private, available only to people who join the International Storytelling School as audience members for a donation of $15 a month. There donations have paid for new recording equipment and various other handy items that allow me to bring you the Art of Storytelling Podcast and Blog. Perhaps you would consider becoming a member and supporting the production of this show for pennies a day….

Here are a list of all the answers I have been laying out on the school website…

Applied Storytelling #004 – Bringing the Love Home.
I have spent this National Storytelling Network Conference with these wonderful storytellers. Now I want to take that energy and that feeling and that attention and bring it out into the real world. How do you get another audience to understand the nature of what you are saying?

Applied Storytelling #005 – Integrating a Story into your Repertoire

48. Brother Wolf: An Interview by Stephanie Benger

Audience
SB: When did you first start podcasting your show “The Art of Storytelling”?

BW: I started that podcast in April of 2007.

SB: And you’ve done over a hundred, haven’t you?

BW: There are 103 online, with 17 more waiting to be uploaded.

SB: And is it mostly an American audience?

BW: I view the podcast as an International project. 44% of my audience is overseas. I’ve been working really hard to connect with international potential audience when they’re in the United States.

SB: So, the podcast is a big part of what you do?

BW: Yes, definitely. One of the things that’s started happening recently is that people are starting to come and say “interview me,” but it really doesn’t work that way. I’ve only ever done that twice, and both times I regretted doing it….
One of the things I struggle with is that a lot of podcasts that are very successful aim at an audience that is very tech savvy, but my target audience (storytellers) is almost the opposite. What that means is that the build is much slower than with other projects of these type. It’s one of the great frustrations of the project for me. And recently I rebranded it, which makes that process even slower. That’s why I’m always quick to say to anyone “if you like listening to it, let other people know, or people at your institutions know,” That’s the biggest way my audience grows…

SB: And I actually brought that up when speaking with Dale Jarvis as well. He’s quite successful at using social media, he does a lot of traditional storyteller-type reaching out to people as well, so he’s getting a kind of synergy going there, but he often has to think about bridging the gap between people who are traditional storytellers and are often over 40, and potential storyteller audiences who might not even be aware of the storytelling world unless he reaches out to them using social media.

BW: You use the term “traditional storytelling” a lot. I wouldn’t describe most of the storytellers I know as traditional storytellers. I would say “performance storytellers I know” or “community storytellers,” but I wouldn’t say “traditional tellers” unless I was talking about Native Americans, people from Africa, like the Griots from Africa, places where they still have a living tradition. Though it’s true that most of them are over 40 because it takes many years to master the tradition… Community storytellers doesn’t get as much respect in the U.S. and you can see this in their promotional materials, which often don’t even use the word “storyteller.” The storytelling brand is badly damaged; it’s associated with children and librarians reading books to children. That’s why I recently re-branded my podcast. (From “The Art of Storytelling with Children” to “The Art of Storytelling.” —SB)

SB: What do you think listening to stories does for people?

BW: I think that human beings are community animals. Not in the sense of lower, but in the sense of us being biological. Storytelling arises out of that need to build and structure community. When we know the people in the room, we’re really creating opportunities for connecting with them. In diplomatic relations, there’s a technique for using storytelling to prevent the hotheads from getting out of hand. Tellers are used to using metaphor and simile to speak to each other.

SB: What

Logo for the Art of Storytelling podcast
Eric Wolf, the host of the Art of Storytelling with Brother Wolf Show,
is available to be interviewed on or before April 1st, 2010 on how to lie successfully for April Fools’ Day. In 2009 he was interviewed on Fox 45 local News in Dayton, Ohio. Eric Wolf was a Master of Ceremonies’ at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C 2009 Folk Life Festival.

In his interview he will discuss the advantages of lying and how liars have solid, political, social and psychological reasons for doing so. He will defend an America tradition that dates back to the founding of America back to Mark Twain, why, even back to the Pilgrims. He will also demonstrate the art of tall tales and flat lies for the viewing audience.

A successful tale tall or lie uses five storytelling techniques.
1) The lie needs a basis in truth.
2) The story needs to have a spectacular departure from reality.
3) The teller must have a personal body language that supports the lie.
4) The story should contain at least one small, reasonable detail that rings true to the listener.
5) The teller must have a willingness to defend the lie as truth.
