Happy Monday, all! Just a quick posting to thank Highlights for Children for selecting me for “Illustrator of the Month”. That was the month of February, so I’m a little late in posting this. : )
Highlights is the only magazine (rather, publishing company) I know of that expresses such great appreciation like they do to illustration, illustrators, and the illustrators that they contract. These platters and letters are just a part of their way of conveying the value they have for illustrators. The party they throw each year is amazing (I attended two years ago. Wow!), not to mention the relationship they build with their contractors. It’s got a family-feel to it all.
So thank you, Christine, Cynthia, Kelley and staff, for choosing me for the month of February! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you guys, too!
And, below, is the spread that they are talking about…”The Champion Of Quiet”, a cute story written by Tracy Stewart.
Below: A pull-out of the first spot from the spread.

I’m just posting the rest of the illustrations for the spread I did for this month’s Highlights magazine. Enjoy the day, whatever you do and where ever it finds you. : )
Here’s a spread for Highlights magazines present issue (November 2011) that I worked on a-way back in May. The theme is Thanksgiving and so I thought it time to get on the thematic bandwagon as well as put out a little self-promotional effort. There are some great illustrations and stories in this issue! My illustration buddies, Susan Mitchell and Holli Conger both have illustrations in this issue. Niiice!
Below: Full spread. Please click on illustration for a larger version.

I forgot to post this illustration project that I did a-way back in the late winter for the June 2011 issue of Highlight’s High Five magazine. “Pigs Of Summer” was the title of a spread for an “action rhyme”. As always, it’s a pleasure (and blast!) to work with the art directors at Highlights, drawing all kinds of fun and interesting stuff to encourage kids to learn and grow.
Below: The rough sketches.

This What's Wrong? is on the back cover of September's Highlights for Childrenthat should be available now on newsstands. Once again I drew inspiration from my life in Philadelphia and the many sports we would play together. I think street hockey was everyone's favorite which was usually played in alley ways such as this one here. Alleys can be kind of magical places if the lighting is right - you get the sun bouncing all over the place from the reflections in the windows and the shafts of light pour down much like they would in a narrow canyon in the southwest.
By far my favorite thing in this piece is the break dancing mice in the right corner. Sometimes it's the little things, you know? In this case, hairy little things in track suits.

I was given the fun task of creating the What's Wrong? illustration for Highlights' 65th Birthday issue! It was a lot of fun to have my hand at the Highlights' regulars: the Timbertoes, Arizona (as well as her little brother and sister Tex and Mindi), Goofus and Gallant, the little mouse web dude (does he have a name? he definitely needs one), and the Bear Family. The 65th Birthday issue should be on news stands now. It really is a great issue with a lot of fun surprises. Be sure to pick up a copy!
My apologies for being so long between posts. My wife has been traveling a lot for work so I have had my hands full taking care of our daughter, dog, fish, house, laundry, dishes, etc, all the while teaching and freelancing. This week I officially finished teaching (until autumn that is) so I will have more time to post stuff I have been working on. Speaking of our daughter, you can see her and I on the left side of the illustration. I made myself taller so no one would notice me but it didn't fool anyone at Highlights. I think they're on to me...

April's Highlight's High Five features one of the my That's Silly! illustrations. Be sure to pick up a copy for the little ones in your life (or you can pick one up for yourself, I won't tell).
Below is somewhat of a step by step on how I went about making this piece. I say somewhat because there were steps I forgot to take screenshots of. Maybe I shouldn't be giving out my secrets, huh? I may be putting myself out of work.
Below is the hand drawn line art. I use a 05 micron with some touch up done with a 03. I find it gives good clean line weight.
Flat colors are added via Photoshop. I knew I would be drawing the stuff outside the windows with my tablet so there was no need to ink it.
I turn off the colors layer and add a gradient layer knocking out the light with my tablet.
Our unexpected snow storm has me smiling. I love walking in the snow, I love making fresh snow cones, flavored with maple syrup. I love making snow angels and snow forts with my grandkids.
But mostly (today) I love that I am snowed in all alone, and everything else I had scheduled has been canceled. That means I have a writing day with no interruptions, no hurry, just time to try this and that--to brainstorm that devotional I just thought of, to finish up the Clubhouse Jr. story and send it off, to work on my new Highlights story, "Sophie and the Dragon." I can put all those handwritten scenes into the computer for my new novel, THE BOOK OF BREE.
All things are possible on a Snow Day. I'm signing off now, to have the best kind of Snow Play ever--playing with my writing.

Hi Donna,
I haven’t been. People rave on it! I want to take a long weekend workshop but I’ve never seen one offered except during the school year. I can’t go then. I’ve thought about contacting them and asking would they consider offering one in the summer. Maybe they would.

Cheryl – from everything I’ve read and heard, the Highlights Chautauqua experience is fantastic!
Delanco is a small all American town that sits on a peninsula surrounded by the Delaware River and the Rancocas Creek. I lived on the second floor of a remodeled old general store dating back to 1852 for 8 years. It was the first I was truly on my own. The train station was just three blocks away which would take me into Camden, NJ for my connection to the Patco line into Philadelphia. I love Delanco and I miss it quite a bit. It really is a great place to live. A lot of the suburban illustrations I make get their inspiration from my short time in Delanco.
I knew this scene was going to be published in February so I wanted to give it the feel of a cold snowy morning with the sun just rising. The funny part is that when I started working on this piece it was in the middle of August at 101 degrees.
Also, I am illustrator for the Make it! Cook it! spread each month in High Five (along with the talented Liz Dubois who illustrates the Cook It! Ingredients). I'll post some shots of the recent spreads soon.
For those who don't know, Highlights High Five is a magazine aimed at children 5 and under. Get a subscription today!

This What's Wrong? piece was really fun to work on. It appears on the back of the December issue of Highlights for Children. Below is the finished line art. Roughly 16 inches wide. More details and secrets below...
Below is the sketch. Going into this I thought it as going to be really difficult but it all came together pretty easy. It wound up taking only 7-8 hours to sketch. You can see the major differences between the final art and the sketch here. Changes of note: Most of the sculptures are close to finish. The Texas shaped base of Ranger Kent. The guy with the chainsaw. The sea turtle the woman is standing on. The kid "stabbing" the fisherman in the back (not intentional). Also, Ranger Kent looks like he is sitting inside the horse, a major oversight on my part.
Below are the little "secrets" that I added. Again, I think it would go over most people's heads but it's fun for me to add them in.

Things of note in this one: I not only added Usagi Yojimbo to this piece, he's the white rabbit with the top knot in the inflatable raft, but I also added Jim Lawson's frog, Orson, from his comic Bade Biker and Orson. The comic books Usagi Yojimbo and Bade Biker & Orson were two of the biggest art influences on me when I was in grade school.
In the final printed version of this piece Usagi was changed to just a plain white rabbit. Cindy and David caught me on that one. I'll post it once I get the chance.
November's Highlights Magazine features not only my work on the back cover (see above), the interior (November's hidden picture referred to earlier in blog here) but for the first time my work was on the front cover (see below)!
Okay, okay, not REALLY. Look closer. MUCH closer. I just had a snippet from my hidden picture on the front cover. Re-cork the champagne...

This past weekend, I was at the Highlights Illustrators party in Honesdale, PA. An opportunity to get out my studio and talk with...other people! And illustrators at that! This time was extra special since 4 out of 7 of us in our Illustration for Kids group got to get together (Paula, Susan, Jenn, and I).These ladies have been with me at the very beginning of my illustration career and its amazing that 4 years later we get to meet in person.
There was an illustrators seminar (which I will do another post on) and portfolio sharing afterwards.
My Portfolio, books, and cards
There were silly costumes and square dancing. They know how to throw a good party! Thank you so much to all the folks over at Highlights. Hope to see you all next year.

This past weekend I attending my first Highlights For Children’s annual illustrators’ party. What fun! The fine folks at Highlights throw this bash every year at their offices in Honesdale, PA to show appreciation to the freelancers they hire throughout the year. I haven’t had the opportunity to attend until now, so myself and illustrator Susan Mitchell made the long trek down for the event. I met for the first time most of the editors and art directors I work with throughout the year, multiple other illustrators whose work I see in the magazine & some of the other Illustration For Kids girls (Jennifer & Jannie, as well as Susan). There was great food, square dancing, portfolio sharing, and a costume party. So a big thank you to Highlights and all the individuals involved who make this happen year after year! You rock! And I also want to mention how wonderful it was to finally meet people who’s work I admire (e.g. Julie Fortenberry, Karen Lee, Liz Goulet, Jennifer Thermes, Chuck Dillon…just to name a few!). I have posted some pictures on Facebook, so those can be seen here, if you are part of that social networky-thingy.
Now it’s back to the drawing board–though feeling much rejuvenated and refreshed! So I leave you with this little video I took on the fly during the costume party. Just illustrators being silly!

For those of you not on facebook I thought I would post these photos from the recent Highlights Illustrators' Party. The theme this year was "That's Silly!" so my family and I decided it would be silliest if we all went dressed as Princess Leia. Don't judge us too harshly.

Back in July I was asked to create the above mural for the Highlights Illustrators' Party. A big honor. The theme was based on Highlights High Five's "That's Silly!" feature, a variation of the Highlights' "What's Wrong?" feature that is found on the back covers of which I have been doing a lot of the past year.
Since blogger will not allow you to get a closer look at this image I have split and uploaded the mural as close up segments below. A detailed description of how I went about making this piece is below the last segment.
BTW I got your Which Art Student Are You? book in the mail. Thanks for signing it and the little Usagi head sketch on the mailer.
Unfortunately the mail person shoved it in my mailbox, bending it and crushing the spine. Still the art inside is unharmed :) and I look forward to sitting down and reading it when I get some down time. Thanks again!
I'm sorry to hear that Maka. Those Postal Workers can be such clods sometimes. Last week I had to teach one how to find a zip code. You would think that was lesson one. Good grief!
Below are samples of a spread I did for Highlights magazine a few months back for their current issue. “The Right Note”, written by David Hill, is a story about a violin student who, during a recital at her teacher’s home, is able to help her teacher locate her “lost in the house somewhere” cat when she plays a high C, which makes the cat meow. The story is much better than my short synopsis of it, of course.
So below, I have the August cover (sweetly illustrated by Melanie Hall) and the content page (showing a pull-out of one my spots):
Then, below, is the final spread. I wasn’t privy to what the background color would be, but I would make some color changes to accommodate, I believe.
And for those who like to see roughs, etc., I have the layout with my sketches inserted. For the most part the sketches were accepted, with just a change or two. A wall was added on the 3rd spot in the upper right so you get an idea of the location of the cat.

This month's Highlights for Children features one of my What's Wrong back covers! I had a lot of fun with this one and hid some pop culture stuff to make it a little more fun for adults who are paying attention. I realize some text/images are so small or so obscure that the only way you'd know is if I told you so here is my answer key below:

Because it's Odyssey of the Mind season! We are going to tournament in just a little over a week. I love it! I hate it! I live for it and I might die from it if I don't get more sleep. I have a fantastic middle school team again! I love these kids and love to see them grow and change, become brave and funny. I will post pictures after the tournament.
Also - I am very very pleased to announce that I am now represented by the fantastic Maggie Byer-Sprinzeles! Yes! We are off to a fantastic start already.
...and - The March 2010 issue of Highlights For Children is out. I did the cover art!

Hi Holli - It's all because of you! I contacted Maggie after I read your interview on Escape From Ill Isle. I have been so impressed with her and her group of artists. And I am tickled to be associated with you!
I quite like the bunny playing guitar.
