26. Justin Roberts at the Target Book Festival Minneapolis

Here are some shots of my buddy Justin Roberts, performing with my other buddies, the Not Ready for Naptime Players, at the Target Book Festival in Minneapolis. Head on over to Justin's website to listen to some great indie rock kids' music. My favorite song right now is "Meltdown", which ends with the lyrics, "I'll stop the world and meltdown with you!" Brilliant!

Want to see Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players perform live? Come on by the NY Times Great Read on Sunday. The band will be taking the Target stage right after I read. (I am at 10:55 AM, they are on at 11:25 AM.)

27. Yo Gabba Gabba at the Target Book Festival Minneapolis

Have you ever seen the show Yo Gabba Gabba? I loved the show when it was an online only show, was so psyched to see it get picked up by Nick Jr and am now so happy to call DJ Lance Rock (and Brobee) a friend. If you have never seen the show, head over to the show's website and watch some videos. I'm so happy to have such a cool show to enjoy with my daughter.

If you'd like to see DJ Lance Rock and Brobee live, come on by the NY Times Great Read on Sunday. The Yo Gabba Gabba crew will be taking the Target stage at 10 AM. (Which is two slots before I do.)

28. Kate DiCamillo at the Decatur Book Festival

We had a blast hanging out with the very charming and very funny Kate DiCamillo at the Decatur Book Festival. We got to know Kate really well at 4:30 in the morning when the fire alarm was set off at the hotel. Imagine that? A hotel full of authors evacuating before the sun even rose. Fortunately, everyone made it to their designated stage times the next day.

30. Guess who came to dinner?

G and I had the honor of hosting Tomie dePaola and his crew for dinner last weekend. G grew up with repeat readings of Strega Nona. She even had that original copy in her apartment in Boston when we first met. (The book made every move from college on.) She's an Italian girl who likes to cook and loves to see people enjoy her food. Imagine how she felt when her hero not only stopped by, but loved her meal!

Check out Tomie's blog for his perspective.

And check out the article about Tomie's work and Carle exhibit in The Amherst Bulletin.

31. Comic Con recap

Man oh man...Comic Con! Have you been? It's really hard to sum up the experience of my first Con. Overwhelming is the word that initially comes to mind. 125,000 something people in attendance, many in costumes. There were giant robots, huge displays. It was awesome!!!

It was a perfect place to introduce Lunch Lady to the world.

Here is a fully linkable off-the-top-of-my-head list of the old friends, new friends, fellow panelists and people I geeked out over in San Diego—Holly Black (author of The Good Neighbors), Dan Santat (illustrator of Chicken Dance), Tony & Angela DiTerlizzi (author & illustrator of Meno), Jenni Holm (author of Babymouse), Bob Boyle (creator of Wow! Wow! Wubzy!), Eric Wright (author and illustrator of Frankie Pickle), Mike Moon (illustrator of How to Potty Train Your Monster and Art Director for Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends), David Horvath (creator of Ugly Dolls), Ted Biaseli (voice actor on Marvel Super Hero Squad), Bryan Lee O'Malley (author/illustator of Scott Pilgrim), Hope Larson (author/illustrator of Chiggers), Cecil Castellucci (author of Geektastic), Gene Yang (author/illustrator of American Born Chinese), Mac McCool (author/illustrator of Arizona), Chris Schweizer (author/illustrator of Crogan's Vevenge), and Derek Kirk Kim (illustrator of Eternal Smile).

Do check out all of their projects!

The biggest geek-out moment for me—attending a live read of a Sponge Bob Square Pants episode with the cast and then later bumping into Tom Kenny, the voice of Sponge Bob himself, on the conference floor. He was the nicest, coolest person. That is a true Comic Con moment.
Publishers Weekly just published a piece covering all things for kids at the Con. Check out their coverage here.

Finally, here are a few pics that I snapped:

32. Tomie show at the Carle Museum

Last Saturday, G and I had the honor of attending the private Members' Opening of the Tomie dePaola retrospective at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. The show is fantastic, such an inspiration. If you can get to Amherst, do check out "Drawings From the Heart: Tomie dePaola Turns 75". And if you don't live near Amherst (like librarian Cathy, who flew in from Arizona) . . . get there just the same. And there will be more opportunities to catch Tomie himself at future museum events, so check out the Carle's schedule.

G and I didn't have our camera, but I knew Bob Blog Hechtel would have his. This pic is taken from Tomie's blog (by Bob).

33. Recess Monkey

Yesterday, Recess Monkey was in town. They're the ones who put together the killer song for Lunch Lady.

In the morning, they stopped by the studio. (Look for my cameo in their next DVD.) And in the afternoon, they performed at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art

If Recess Monkey is playing in a town near you, you should definitely check them out. Your kids would love them. Head over to www.recessmonkeytown.com to look up their schedule and while you're there, pick up a CD or two.

35. It was a good "Stroll"

G and I had a great time at "The Strolling of the Heifers" last weekend. If you live within driving distance of this annual event - it's by far worth the trip. Where else can you see hundreds of cows and funky art projects marching down Main St?

See below the kids who are carrying signs that depict the picture books featured in "Livestock".
The art students of Brattleboro High School made this Punk Farm van for the parade.
And these Brattleboro students brought the rock to what was probably one of the greatest readings ever of the Punk Farm books.

On Monday, Scott Nash and I gave a lecture to the art students at Brattleboro High to thank them for their work. I first saw Scott's work back in '97 when his first book, Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp, was published. I was taking a course on writing and illustrating picture books in college and my professors brought it in as an exemplary book. I soon became a big fan. 11 years later there we were at the news desk....
We are pictured here with his wife Nancy (another incredible artist!) and Kirsten Cappy. Authors, illustrators and publishers take note - this woman is incredible. She puts together incredible book events - the aforementioned Livestock and runs the unbeatable Lunch Box series in Portland, ME (remember the guy wearing a sheep costume or the clay slugs?). Bookmark http://curiouscitydoings.blogspot.com and keep track of this literary rock star!

I mean, just check out all of the awesomeness she has created for authors and illustrators via Curious City's Flick pages - http://www.flickr.com/photos/curiouscity/sets/

36. TLA-mazing

TLA was an absolute blast. I saw a lot of familiar Texan librarian faces and a lot of familiar author faces. And of course - I met a ton of great new friends as well.

The break out session with the librarians of Round Rock & Abilene was a rousing success. We had a full house! (That's not an easy thing to do at these conferences, there is a lot going on!) Much should be attributed to these crazy ladies who welcomed people as they walked in.

A big thanks to my peeps of Abilene and Round Rock for having me on board!

Here are some of the other people that I got to hang out with:

Here I am with Eric Carle. You may know him from a little book called The Hungry Caterpillar. Wait a minute...that's not E-Carle. WHAT?! Oh - that's Tomie dePaola. I was wondering why he kept talking about Strega Nona...

That's me on the right and Matt Holm on the left. Matt is the illustrator of the most awesome Baby Mouse series.

This is how Libba Bray and I roll.

Adam Rex and I take our giant cats very seriously.

But not always.

Kevin Henkes is as awesome as you would think. This was my first time meeting Mr. Henkes, and I can't wait to run into him again. That is assuming his restraining order doesn't go through...

Matt and I are going to retire from illustrating and start our own cruise ship for librarians where we entertain as lounge singers. Who's in?

Heather Jankowski is a world class librarian. She won't tell you this, but look at the airplane scene in Punk Farm on Tour and tell me if you recognize anyone wearing a "Hancok Hawk" T-shirt.

Here I am with Thelma and Louise...

My signing at TLA was unlike anything I have ever experienced. The conference officials had to shut down my line at the Random House booth and move it to the "Author's Corral". It was all so very U2 rooftop concert, cops trying to hold us down kind of thing.

A big THANK YOU again to y'all who came out to support me and I hope to see you at TLA again one of these years!

37. holy moly!

I just received a poster that Random House produced. This is definitely a Wayne's World - 'We're not worthy' moment...

Pictured counterclockwise, starting at the left: Punk Farm, The Pokey Puppy, Cat in the Hat, Babar, Duck & Goose, Frederick the mouse, Veronica and Princess Baby.

38. Earth Day: Wild in love with the planet we've got

The frogs are singing loudly now from the ditches, dugouts, and sloughs, the ducks -- especially the goldeneyes -- are pairing up, the grass is greening, gophers are running about, hawks swoop around overhead, and the prairie crocuses are up. I missed Poetry Friday again -- too many visitors here and places to be there. We had our mandated semi-annual home school facilitator visit (who last time

39. Poetry Friday: Bedgraggled but determined

Since the beginning of the month, we've had days pelted with snow, wind, and a bit of rain. But we've had two sunny, warm(ish) days, the snow is gone from much of the yard and the fields, the meadowlarks are back and singing, and the bluebirds are back and flying around, and in town at least we saw some early bulbs pushing their way through the soil. Rainy Robin by Frances Frost (1905-1959) The
