with their respective captions by Charles Gomez of the Hercules Patch :)
Genevieve Santos of Le Petit Elefant kept busy by sewing more products as she waited for customers
Ben and Alma Santos, residents of San Jose, traveled to Hercules for the tree lighting and to visit their daughter, Genevieve Santos, of Le Petit Elefant.

28. Hercules's Craft Bazaar Day 2

You know you're doing something right when customers return the day after for more. It's also amazing when you realize you have a following, & not in the google buzz or twitter sense, or amongst your friends because that only partially counts. I don't know... It's all very encouraging and reaffirming that I'm gold pursuing this art thing.
I think the most heartwarming sale of the day was to a woman who purchased a print of Literary Fort. She told me it reminded her of her kids when they were little because they loved to read all the time. She said she'd frame it over her sewing machine to inspire her & remind her of her kids :) . I packaged the print & as she walked away, I asked her how old her kids are now. "21 & 26... one's graduating from UCLA this year..." There was a tinge of sadness & nostalgia in her voice, and I felt so... I don't know... privileged? appreciative? that something I painted in a way penetrated a very intimate memory for her.
Overall, the day was slow, which only meant I worked while I worked :)

29. Hercules's Craft Bazaar Day 1

Wow. Just wow. A shockingly positive experience. I am SO pumped for tomorrow.
I was suffering from lack of enthusiasm in the days leading up to this fair. I felt calm, but a little too calm (yeah... a little too ralph). I was a little weary about the potential rain, setting up a tent for the first time, arranging the lights, a new space, etc. Even during the set up I felt moody. Then BAM! I started talking to the visitors & shoppers, the mayor of Hercules announced the arrival of Santa Claus (you could take pictures with him in the photobooth haha), my mom brought me a free cookie... all was well in the world. It never rained. When I didn't make a sale, I made a friend. I was interviewed by the city's newspaper. Even an old friend from USC visited! Hollerrrrrrr!
The only reason why I put eyes on some of my elephants is so kids can dig around and find the ones that do. It's amazing how much fun they have. One little girl immediately started searching, flipping the ears over and tossing aside the eyeless. When she found her first one, she jumped up and showed her mom. She was half giggling, half asking for it. She wouldn't let it go. Eeeeee! Her mom helped her put it in the paperbag & once it was inside, she hugged the bag and skipped away with it still pressed against her chest. That kind of stuff just makes me fuzzy & happy.
Drawing these sign up sheets are my favorite :)

31. EVHS Holiday Craft Fair Recap

So! Honestly not my most favorite, positive craft fair experience but still a great time.
I wasn't really sure what to expect since it was 1) in San Jose (I've only vended in LA & BK), 2) in a high school gym, and 3) in San Jose. San Jose is such a strange city to me. Definitely diverse and the size of a big, major city but with the attitude of a suburb. I really don't know how that translates in the selling of handmade goods. I still don't know.

I have to admit though... a great benefit was having my parents around. I've largely operated with help from my 'good friends' so having parental units instead was an interesting change. I mean, this was my breakfast Saturday morning:
Yeah. I know, right?

One thing I definitely appreciated was the support from my friends hundreds of miles away. I was flying solo mostly (my parents left at one point or another because of boredom though I don't think they'd admit it) but the incoming phone calls, videos of monkey :), texts, photo likes on fb & emails were lovely. Such good friends!
Next to me was the most incredible 70+ year old abuela who knitted scarves, hats, etc. She did it with her eyes closed, blazing through the yarn like it ain't no thang. She had me open her medication bottle for her, which amazes me since she clearly has the hand strength to knit a mile a minute. As I handed back her pill container, I brushed against her wrinkly weathered hand & was immediately reminded of Di fara's & the 70+ y.o. pizza man in Brooklyn. I rhetorically asked my mom if that would be me & she flat out said 'no.' Honestly I don't think I'd mind.

Le Petit Elefant & {paper & type} will be sharing a booth at the Moon Festival, Chinatown Los Angeles on Sept 25th, 5pm-12am. Yay!!! We've never done an outdoor night market before... should be fun & interesting! I've been hustling steadily before knowing of this festival, but now that I doooo know! Oh brother! I just took inventory and well, I counted more than 30 plush so I could be in far worse shape :)

36. Stop & Shop Show THIS weekend!

I've been sketching my creatures (I promise!) but I am too busy to scan them right now... I'm in the process of getting ready for my second show of the year and one of the best ones to be involved in if you live and craft in Edmonton... The Stop & Shop Show (Scroll down for more info)!

I have a bunch of new prints & cards as well as some original designs that have remained top sellers for me... Stop by the show early and be one of the first 25 in the door each day and you'll receive a goodie bag that includes a coupon for my booth (there's always a line out the door for this show so be early).

Print off this coupon to get $2 off admission to the show!
