26. a song that i know

Here's one that started life in one of my sketchbooks and has now been reworked on paper. I was looking for a final image to complete the new 'drawing with a ballpoint' zine and as these were such a hit in France (I can't think why) I decided to go with them.

I've added a little extra something to the zine version (no. I'm not getting my bra out again) but you'll have to wait until you get it in your grubby little mits.

27. all through the night

Here's one from the up and coming new ballpoint pen zine. It's not completely finished in this version, a little more has been added since. A little something extra for those who purchase the zine. C'mon, I have to entice you somehow. I'll be putting it for pre order in the next couple of days.

This is my living room and the armchair is my workspace.

28. something to be

So here's a little thing I've been working on for a little while. It's a new zine. Or rather this is the cover. It's not a Molezine, it's a bit different. Not quite as posh as my little Molezines, but, I think, more in the spirit of zines. It's also a kind of 'drawing with a ballpoint/biro/stilo/bic' zine. It'll be out in the next couple of weeks (bad timing I know, with the Christmas mail, but that's typical).

I did wonder about putting it for pre order, but after the debacle with the last one I'm not too sure. What do you think?

29. the way i feel from day to day

Before I signed with my agent I visited her at her home and we went through all of my drawings, so that she could get an idea of where my work was at and where it might go. When she saw the many drawings of collections, that I create, she said "These drawings look like endpapers. Beautiful endpapers, but endpapers all the same". I have to agree. They do.

You see, I absolutely love endpapers. I've bought many a second hand book on the strength of the endpapers alone. They are often my favourite part of a book. Just Google image 'endpapers' and, if you are anything like me, you'll be drooling for hours.

It got me thinking that my most perfect job in the whole world would be an endpapers illustrator. Seriously, I couldn't think of anything better. So, if you hear of any endpaper-drawer jobs going please let me know. In the meantime here's a couple more from my travel Moleskine.

30. maybe tomorrow

I should have been posting this drawing this evening. The whole drawing, that is. However, earlier today, whilst washing out all the cans and tins for my recycling I made a big gash to the thumb of my drawing hand. Yeah, that's what it's known as now 'my drawing hand'.

Anyway, it's all bandaged up, which makes it a little difficult to hold a pen. Somehow, though, I'll pull through.

31. and you tell yourself

OK, this is the last thing I am going to say about shoes, from now on. I feel like I've talked about nothing but bloody shoes recently. So, I'm changing the subject. From my next post, of course.

32. even after all this time

I remember at the beginning of the year, making a whole load of New Years drawing resolutions. I then proceeded to draw loads of shoes. Even though that hadn't been one of the resolutions. I had a big old shoe binge (or should that be purge?), for about a month and half. It seems that I have one of those every six months.

It's totally unintentional. I'm not that obsessed with shoes. I like them, yes, but I don't spend most of my day thinking about them. Despite what you may see on this blog. It's made me think about it. Why? Why shoes? Why do so many people like shoes so much?

Anyway, here's another drawing of a Stan Smith. It belongs to Josh, who has a thing for Adidas trainers. So it's not just a girl thing.

33. through your window

As promised, here is the second method I use, when it comes to drawing shoes. This, it has to be said, is my favourite method of all. And, I use it not only for drawings shoes but for most of the still life drawings that I make. In fact, this is probably how about 90% of them were created. My friend says it's cheating, but I don't think so. This method means that everything I draw is the actual size of the object. Plus, for me, it brings the object and the drawing closer together. I feel that the object really becomes a part of the drawing when I draw like this;

Method 2

Oh, and by the way, I have used exactly the same tools as in the last post minus the tracing paper. You don't need that.
Step 1. Get your Converse boot, or whatever it is you want to draw, and draw around it. Yes, actually put it on the page and draw around it. I've used pencil to get the initial shape in the drawing above. It'll never be true to shape, because it depends what angle you are coming from (in so many ways), but I like that.
Step 2. Then draw around the pencil outline with a ballpoint to give you a ballpoint outline (apologies for the totally bloody obviousness of what I'm saying). It doesn't matter if it differs from the pencil outline, it's your shoe and your drawing.

Step 3. Adding 'values'. I'd never actually heard this term before I started drawing blogging. I think it might be a US term (?) or even a technical term. As I said in the last post, I've had no training so maybe that's why I'd never heard it before. So, for those, not in the know, like me, add some shading! By looking at your shoe you can see where the darker bits are - hatch there.
Step 4. More hatching. More more more. Continuing on from the last step, building it up and adding some texture.
Step 5. Adding more detail and continuing with the therapeutic cross hatching. Really feel those textures. Touch your boots!

34. it's easy

This is a bit of a departure for me. I know it doesn't look like it, but it is.

Yes they are doodles. Yes it's drawn with a ballpoint. But, let me tell you, the urge to cross hatch the hell out of those doodles was eating me up inside. But, I resisted. Somehow, I resisted. Apart from a little LOVE.

35. running over the same old ground....again

Look better like this, don't they?
Click on drawing to view.

In the last post I was considering giving up this kind of drawing. I will never give up the ballpoint, though. Never! I love it far too much. I don't understand why everybody doesn't draw in ballpoint. It's more the doodley style thing I was thinking of putting to bed. However, I do have an idea for them, and I need to get that out of my system first. And, it's a rather large idea. After which, you'll be as bored of these kind of drawings as I am.

36. blowing off the dust

Right then, back to business.

A bit of a crappy drawing to come back with, I'll admit, but this is my commitment to a week of posting. A new post every single day. Although, I know that when I make that kind of statement the pressure gets too much for me. Perhaps I shouldn't mention it. No, I won't say a word. If you want to see new drawings, every day for a week, then you won't find them here.

37. on a windy common

Another scarf. Just in case you were in any doubt.

What this image tells me is that my scanner really could do with a good scrub.

Another scarf, some dust, dirt and probably a couple of cat hairs. Just in case you were in any doubt.

38. it's so hard to wait

I know, I know.

Another week passes and I still haven't produced a drawing that I want to share. So today, once again, I found solace in a ballpoint pen and some Adidas trainers. Predictable but comforting.

39. get back

This is very strange. Not that I'm drawing shoes, trainers to be specific, in ballpoint pen. That's probably pretty predictable. What's strange is using somebody else's pc and somebody else's scanner. It all looks so strange. I have no idea what the quality of this scan looks like to you, but it's not looking great from where I am sitting. Which is in somebody else's chair.

Still feeling a bit blue about my scanning issues.
But shoes always seem to cheer me up. View my shoe collection HERE.

40. singing with my feet

Here's the dilemma folks; to buy or not to buy. I really want these shoes. I have them here in my house. I ordered them from the catalogue. Just so that I could look at them. But, if I'm honest with myself, I cannot afford them. I am poor and I cannot afford new lovely gorgeous shoes. Shoes that I really really really really want.

If anyone would like to buy this drawing for exactly £75 that would really help me out with this dilemma. I admit it, I'm a shoe whore.

Lovely gorgeous shoes in black ballpoint.

41. i want you, i want you so bad

Still not a great deal of drawing going on around here. So here's a little doodle I did, a while back, with one of THESE PENS. It wasn't my pen, I'd borrowed it to doodle with. However, finding this drawing has reminded me of how truly amazing those pens are. In fact, I do believe they are the greatest inventions of all time. Why don't I have one?

I'm off to source four colour ballpoint multi pens....

42. it's funny how these old feelings hang around

So, I've been a little distracted recently. Partly because I've been working on something that I've been wanting to do for ages. I wasn't going to say anything about it quite yet, I don't want to tempt fate, but I'm really rubbish at keeping secrets.

OK, if you insist I'll tell you. Next week I hope to have a little (teeny tiny little) zine for sale. It includes a few of my favourite drawings from my Moleskines. They seemed to be some of your Faves, too.

This drawing is, in a way, a promotional piece for the zine. All of the things in this illo are clues to the drawings that will appear in the zine (does that make ANY sense?). Maybe you can spot some of them amongst THIS LOT.

Or, just come back in a few days time to see some photos of my very first zine. If, of course, I haven't jinxed it, by letting the cat out of the bag, before it's actually been printed. Yikes. WHY did you make me tell you?

43. i've been searching, searching, trying to find the words to say

You can't get a more perfect breakfast than grilled kippers and poached egg, can you? Actually, don't bother answering that, because even as I was typing those words loads more dishes that could take the 'perfect breakfast' title popped into my head. Bacon butties, of course. Porridge with honey on a cold winters morning. And, warm croissants with cream cheese and jam, Full English, Continental, smoked haddock and poached eggs, Nutella on toast, houmous and pittas, Crunchy Nut Cornflakes, beans and cheese on toast. You get the picture.

Grilled kippers and poached egg, ONE of the most perfect breakfasts, ever.
Check SpellingBy the way, nobody has come even remotely close to working out the theme of THIS little book. Any guesses? Alternatively, you could just tell me your favourite breakfast.

44. i can see all i have done

My friend mentioned that my blog seems to have gone a little flat recently. He's always so supportive (yeah, sarcasm), but actually, although it pains me to agree with him, I feel the same. There are a few reasons for that.

I think lulls are quite natural. It's just a part of life. You can't always keep up that creative intensity. Also, I'm working a number of different things that aren't all about drawing.

Starting this blog a few years ago helped me discover my love of drawing all over again. And, also gave me a whole bunch of encouragement, and confidence, from all of your visits and comments. I never thought I was good at anything before.

This last year things have moved up a gear. Getting selected for Bologna, signing with an agent, meeting publishers, etc. And, now I've started believing that maybe somehow I can make a career out of illustration. That, however, takes a load of time doing all that businessy stuff. Plus, I work a full time job.

So, I have to concentrate my efforts in other places. I am still drawing, though, amongst all this, and will still be posting, so please, keep visiting my loyal friends.

Of course, I need to squeeze in little sketches, like this, for the sake of my sanity.

(I don't know if you guys are interested in this journey of trying to make a living out of illustration. Some of you may be going through the same thing. I'm quite happy to share this with you, but I don't want to bore you all. You tell me)

45. sittin' around waiting for my life to begin

Lunch for one. Sad, innit?

I've become a bit obsessed with this little project. The first reason for this obsession is that I am avoiding doing the two projects that I really really REALLY must do. The second is because I've developed the theme, and when I get something like that in my head I just cannot let go. It keeps me awake at night. Originally the theme of the book was an around-the-house-type-of-drawings book. It still is, but now it has an added twist. And, quite frankly, if you can guess what that twist might be I'll be truly astonished. The two versions of this drawing are a clue, but I ain't going to reveal it. It's for me to know and you to find out.

Oh, and I'm just loving the word 'astonish' these days. Isn't it a great word?

46. the light nights are here

I find having to post photos of my work really frustrating. I want you all to be able to get a proper look, stick your beaks in and all that, and I don't feel that you can do that with photos. I mean, seriously, how does one photograph a trompe l'oeil? The angle, the light, the colour, the detail - especially the detail - it just doesn't work. In my opinion. Oh well, until I can afford an A3 scanner that's just the way it is.
The question I get asked the most is about the pens that I use. I always find it astonishing that people would want to know but, if you are interested, you can find a photo, and some notes, of every pen used in this drawing HERE.

49. at the top is...

'Exercise Book' print available HERE.

So, in my last post I said that I was off to do a drawing, and unfortunately that has not happened. Life has got a little crazy and got in the way of art. I suppose it gives me another chance to plug my wares. Sorry.

I also wanted to say a big THANKS for the response to my giveaway (see last post). I've never been so popular! And, of course, to announce the winner. Drum roll please; the winner is Karen Blados. I can't tell you how excited I am about sending this to Karen. She was one of the first drawing bloggers that I came across and is a real inspiration. I'm sure that most of you know her work, but in case you don't pop on over to her blog. You'll be impressed.
Also, I was so overwhelmed by the response that I decided to give one of my prints, above, as a second place prize. That went to Jeanne Grant. Thanks, folks.

50. never ever

I believe that, in the past, I have vowed to never ever draw anything that incorporated a light design on a dark background ever again. It really is a bugger. If you don't believe me have a go.

But, there again, I do believe that I've also vowed to never ever reveal any more of the contents of my underwear drawer.

I'm calling this one EDM #193 - Draw a close-up part of something. You can see my set of challenges, so far, HERE. I've also been interviewed this week by the lovely Laura of Make Do And Mend. And, you can read that HERE.
